It was special enough to be all Big Ten. Pick any year since Nebraska entered the Big Ten and Martinez still would be in the top three in terms of completion percentage. Add on to the fact that TMart had the 2nd highest total offense numbers from our inception in the league until today, and I would say it was a pretty special year.

I really hope one of the guys on our team this year can be special enough to be all Big Ten. i would be one thrilled fan.
Martinez was a dangerous player for what he could do to opposing teams and sometimes what he could do to us. Since he was a home run threat as a runner it opened up the passing game and he made some strides in passing however he struggled with mechanics throughout his career.

What will be make or break for this team is not QB play imo it will be the defense

Just stop with the nonsense. TMart had the 2nd best completion percentage in the Big 10 his junior year at 62%. (He was even better as a Sr. until he went out hurt.) He was 2nd in yards...2nd in TD passes...3rd in efficiency.
Yaaas! Please someone give T-Ragic an award for beating Arkansas State while completing 92.9 % of his "passes" (calling them that is too generous for my taste)
Trollsa,

In these 9 games against decent competition (UCLA, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin again, and Georgia) his completion percentage is 56%. And yes as a senior he was really tearing it up against Wyoming who, that year, gave up nearly 70% completion percentage rate for the year.
Finally we have great QB depth and we are still talking about dudes that weren't recruited by other schools to play QB, for GOOD reason. Moving on....

No... The difference is neither Tommy Armstrong or Taylor Martinez had pocket presence. That is the difference in making smart decisions and risky ones.

My heart will be thanking one of these quarterbacks for not giving me heart attack every time they drop back to pass this year.

Which is fine, but that's total offense and we're not talking about total offense, we're talking about passing. My original point was that him averaging over 26 attempts per game is way too damn many and a misuse of his skillset.

Lots more have topped 70% in a season, which is why I brought it up. Guy has one good year and a poster wants to act like that proves something. OK then, let's measure his good year against other good years. Turns out it ain't special.

I think it's an interesting stat, no ulterior motives for me on this one, I'm not interested in joining the TM discussion.

But, tying the 70% back to Langdorf's comments about being up "around 70%", if our qb's can do that, it could be a really good year for us.

Sorry I thought you said his year wasn't special. He did end up in the top ten of the Big Ten all time for both offense and tds that year. Even if you ignore his running, I still think he had the best passing stats in the Big Ten that year. I will be fine if our qbs produce like that.

I will not be ok with the TD to INT ratio. I will also not be ok with the fumbles. TM did not just struggle with passing mechanics, he was a (historic) turnover machine.

According to TW, taking care of the ball is not part of the deal. Just stats in a vacuum with zero context and a whole lot of revisionist history. Toms Wife I'm sure is OK with getting crushed by Wisconsin as long as our QB has a decent completion % and gets us to 9 win seasons.
I'm not even sure what Tim Beck was trying to do on offense sometimes, let's let guys who have run pro systems in Riley/Langsdorf run their stuff and not try to draw comparisons against Tim Beck's. I would be fine if we could do that. Why not compare a Ford Mustang with a Harley Davidson?

I watched hubs play Div 1 college qb (until injury). If I want info, I can ask him.
Well then you should know all about footwork and pocket presence then right? That should tell you right there that Taylor Martinez and Tommy Armstrong throwing off their back foot 50% of the time is not good quarterback play then right? Not to mention throwing across their body and running into bad situations all game long.

Hurray for Tom playing D1 football. Hell I don't care if you are Tom Rathman's wife. Tommy and Taylor were "good" Athlete's, but terrible quarterbacks.

TMart has to lay awake at night sometimes wondering how much different his last couple years would have been in the program were it not for that dang injury at Missouri. But right up to that point, best QB since Crouch.
This is something that seems to be forgotten at times ! He was all in, trying to get better. Remember the comeback win against OSU

Taylor Martinez hasn't been our QB for over three and a half years.... can we stop arguing over him? None of the players who played with him are still on the team.. except a maybe a few redshirt seniors who did not actually play with him... can we move on?

Bite me, go to the Iowa board if you don't want to read about Husker QB's, present and or future. I wasn't arguing at all.

Now time for you to read the original post. What makes these QBs real QBs is their ability to find the open receiver, make the right reads and complete the pass. Does that sound like TA? Absolutely not. I would entertain an argument that TM fit this mold, at least statistically, and he saved our bacon more than once his junior year... but he was also indecisive far too often and looked uncomfortable if he held the ball too long.

I loved the way TM transformed himself into a running QB who could throw the ball. But it is petty of you to act as if these guys we have now don't deserve any respect, or that you discount any excitement shown about them. So in your world, the only time we can get excited about them is when they are all conference.

And you wonder why people get tired of you, Tom.
It sounds to me like Tom's wife and the old Tulsa Tom both like to argue and stir the pot. Hmmmmm!

My post wasn't directed toward you, I actually agree with your earlier comment that Martinez, had he not gotten injured against Mizzou, would have easily been our best QB since Crouch. His games against KSU and Okie State were some of the best QB play we've had... especially for a freshman. I was at that Mizzou game and that first half is about as explosive as our offense has been in the past decade plus. I went back and looked at the whole thread... I suppose there were some unnecessary potshots at Tmagic and you brought some good facts to the table. If we want to beat the dead horse, though... Who here thinks we shouldn't have fired solich????

TM3 was very good college QB running the type of offense he ran. Great runner and an underrated passer. He actually would check down and look for RBs and TEs for instance. He was a bit of a turnover machine, but the real problem in the TM3 years was the defense. Some of his INTS came from forcing things because the defense couldn't stop a pee-wee run game.

Please accept my apologies then....and Solich should have gotten one more year :)
