After watching the quarterbacking yesterday, it dawned on me how poor our quarterbacking has been for too long. Our current third team QB is far superior to our past first and second teams QB's have been.

I know it's just a practice yadda, yadda, yadda..... But I would agree it was nice to see a simple swing pass to the back or a simple pass to a w.r. in the flat be made to look simple.

I was a little pissed to see almost every pass thrown from the front foot. At Nebraska we throw off our back foot at least a couple times a series. Shaking my damn head....

And all of a sudden we step into the pocket? WTF? For years when pressure came we have fallen back and shown our backs to the defense in protest to their blitzing and coverage. I don't know what this staff has been teaching these young men, but is isn't the Nebraska way. No, I say we find a QB that launches bombs off his back foot, with no regard to technique or coverage. The check down is for cowards. Give me YOLO bombs or give me death.

I don't think Tommy was ever used ideally during his tenure here. I really think he would have been great under Osborne or Solich. He was at least as good a passer as a lot of players that won a bunch of games here, when asked to do so he showed good instincts in the option and he was a great runner and leader. I don't think he was a great fit for Beck's offense. The Foster Farms Bowl offense and the offense we ran for the first few games of last year was probably the offense best suited to his abilities that we actually ran during his tenure. I would have liked to see Martinez healthy in 2013, I think he would have had a great year. I do think we are going to see the best marriage of quarterback and offense since at least Zack Taylor, or maybe even Eric Crouch.

Don't get me wrong, I love Martinez and Armstrong and what they accomplished with what they had but no one would ever mistake them for elite quarterbacks for reasons we already know.

What I have read over the course of spring practice and what I saw in the spring game gave me a confidence in our QB situation that I haven't felt for waaay too long.

When one of these guys becomes all Big Ten, we can talk.
This may be sooner than you think; so maybe you can please many here and take that back. You may be setting the bar a little high; again, many may appreciate that. It was Rocking to watch the qb's and fans in the stand were happy with the 3rd team qb, because of his abilities and fundamentals, despite only 7 points scored there.

Where did the option go? Must be holding this for when the bullets are flying.

The QB-offensive style fit this year will limit turnovers. Tommie was a turnover machine as a square peg in round hole. If the line can give the QB and running backs a little room to operate lots of up side vs recent years of shooting our selves in foot.

Yep. And if that were to happen his statement would change to something like:

"When one of these guys gets drafted then we can talk"

And if that were to happen it would change to

"When one of these guys is starting in the NFL then we can talk"

I'm not sure what's wrong with Nebraska fans, on a Nebraska board, being excited about seeing QB play in our spring game that resembles QB play for the first time in about a decade.

I don't see anyone up here anointing these guys as the next Tom Brady. I'm seeing some excitement about the fact that we have several guys on the roster that can execute a forward pass fundamentally.

No...because one of the guys who "wasn't a qb" by message board gurus was deemed to be first team all Big Ten by those who coached against him. I find it hard to believe we have a stable of qbs better than that.

But maybe we should listen to the gurus. Maybe they have chosen not to be Big 10 head coaches because they enjoy their work at McD's.

And when Tom's wife admits she's Tom, we can continue to ignore him.

I guess there's nothing for us to be excited about with our current QBs.
To be fair, it's a little easier to step up in the pocket when you know you aren't going to get blasted. The touch football thing certainly helps the QB concentrate. It was nice though to see the touch passes and dump offs executed so well.

you do remember that he was only all B1G by the coaches because of the feud between a couple of programs where the coaches refused to vote for the guy that was first team on the writers all B1G team don't you Tom errrr....I mean Mrs. Tom? Meaning he was only all conference because of petty jealousies between rivals.

Whatever, TM won it. PERIOD. Now if you want to say our first three QB's this year are all better, whatever, but to diminish his legit accomplishment seems strange.

The hate for some former players is crazy. TM won it fair and square and could have won it again his senior year if he didn't get hurt. I hope our third string quarterback is All Big Ten material. However it seems a bit hyperbolic when none of those qbs have played a real down of college football.

Watching the spring game made me realize how fun it would have been to see Tanner Lee heading a passing game with last year's receiving core.

What does that have to do with this year's QB's?

All B10 when TMART was QB has zero to do with how our QB's will or will not perform this upcoming season and next.

Barry Sanders set 34 NCAA records during his 1998 season. Does that mean our RB's will have a crappy year this year?

Read the original post. We have three qbs that are "far superior" to our all Big Ten qb in TMart. I really hope we have 3 All Big qbs. It will bode well for the future. I'm just not sure about it considering two have never played a down of real college football and one had crappy stats at his former college.

Now time for you to read the original post. What makes these QBs real QBs is their ability to find the open receiver, make the right reads and complete the pass. Does that sound like TA? Absolutely not. I would entertain an argument that TM fit this mold, at least statistically, and he saved our bacon more than once his junior year... but he was also indecisive far too often and looked uncomfortable if he held the ball too long.

I loved the way TM transformed himself into a running QB who could throw the ball. But it is petty of you to act as if these guys we have now don't deserve any respect, or that you discount any excitement shown about them. So in your world, the only time we can get excited about them is when they are all conference.

And you wonder why people get tired of you, Tom.

1. The OP never said any of what you mention...finding open receiver, making right read, completing the pass...nothin

2. If the stats of our current guys are far superior to TMart's, then the Big Ten is ours for years to come.

3. TMart was second in yards passing in the Big Ten his junior year. He was second in completion percentage. He was second in TD passes. He was third in quarterback rating...AND HE WAS 7th in RUSHING running for over a 1000 yards. Furthermore, his passing stats were on par to even be better than that before his foot injury pushed him out of action his senior year.

4. If deserving of respect means crowning a player who has never played a down "far superior" to an all-conference performer then I guess I'm guilty.

P.S. And when Dingle mentions the other qb (Miller) that should have won but was screwed out of the award, please know he was 6th in completion percentage, 4th in pass efficiency, 6th in yards, 5th in TDs, but did have 200 more yards rushing than TMart. Martinez was better in nearly every passing category.

Until proven otherwise, Nebraska is a middle of the pack west division team. I also found it interesting that supposedly many B1G coaches also felt there would be a drop off with NU's offense this year. It's hard to know if they will be right, but I think it is wise to temper the excitement from a glorified practice that was setup in advance to be a success from the offensive perspective.

Deserving of respect means admitting these guys show potential. Again, you can make an argument for TM, which you have done. But when people are excited about the current QBs we have it is extremely petty to figuratively say, "next", like you did.

Just admit that the future has potential. Don't be a jerk and say get back to me when one of hem is all conference. That's what I'm saying.

Edit: and by the way, OP has nothing to say about TM. It's about TA and RF, our top two QBs of the last four years (with RKIII thrown in) and these QBs are better than those QBs for this system.

Can you share your source of these B1G coaches that felt there would be a drop off? Not doubting you, just wondering which coaches feel that way. They could be right with the losses at receiver and tight end, but everything else suggests they will be better in this offense.

Didn't read the entire thread, so maybe it's already been said...I noticed more than one occasion, on a 3rd and 7 (or similar d & d) we threw 7-8 yard patterns instead of into double coverage 20+ yards down-field.
That doesn't make them quarterbacks like Martinez. Just ask Tulsa Tom.

You mean the #1 pass defense in the Big Ten the year TM won the qb award? Not sure that made other qbs look all conference.

no, i mean the one that has been shredded the last couple of years. i have high hopes for Diaco, but how good our defense is remains to be seen. Not convinced our talent issues have been resolved.

If we're going to be anal about it, I didn't notice the name "Tmart" anywhere in the original post.

At any rate, glad to have guys on the roster who can throw the football. It's been a LONG time.

Stats from the spring game. The real question to me is, how much can you tell from a lop-sided spring game? Well, all the qb's looked competent and like throwing qb's should "look". Interestingly enough, Bunch had the highest completion pct at around 71%. I'm guessing Lee will be named the starter.

Surprises to me: Seemed like quite a few throws to TE.

I'm disappointed on not seeing the new defense, but it's okay if the staff wants to keep it under wraps. I didn't pay really any attention to who was playing on defense, call it the butthurt-because-no-3-4 excuse.

Adding both teams together, 95 pass attempts/ 40 rush attempts. Maybe providing pass att to allow proof of separation between qb's? Maybe a prelude of things to come? Or, maybe just another spring game?
