Interesting player. Seems to have a high skill level. Handles it. Can shoot from outside. Mobile. Size.

But it has not translated yet to high production on the court. He has top 100 ability but is not ranked highly because of that lack of production.

Doesn’t mean that he won’t blossom at the next level, though.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion. Inconsistency kept him out of the Rivals150 but he is kinda on the bubble to make it in if he becomes a consistent performer.

Kid can shoot it though. Should turn out to be a good long term Division I prospect.

You pretty much said what I said. “Highly ranked” is subjective, but being on Rivals that means being in the top 150. Basically, he is not a 4 or 5 star. You mentioned consistency which is exactly what I said. I said he was as a good shooter who has a chance to be a good college player. Pretty much everything you said.

When you write "highly ranked" who are you quoting?

I just read your earlier post again and didn't see the words consistent, inconsistent or consistency so I didn't say exactly what you said.

You mentioned the kid having top 100 ability. I'm just not sure how you came to that conclusion but maybe you have seen more of his games than I have.

I don't see much difference between these two posts. Basically the kid has a lot of upside, but he is currently not in the rankings because of production/consistency.

I do.

There is a big gap between having "top 100 ability" and debuting in the Rivals150.

Do I think he will be in the Rivals150 by the time we close the books on his class? Yes, I do.

Here's an update on Hawkins weekend visit to Illinois....I believe based on the article and other articles elsewhere, that Hawkins has Chicago or Illinois roots and was a primary reason for Hawkins considering B1G schools like Illinois, RU and others in the Chicago area like DePaul (not yet scheduled) and Marquette is scheduled next for this weekend.

The attached article seems to believe if Marquette securing another player at Hawkins position removes them from the race, that maybe DePaul replaces them with a visit.

There was a mention of an October visit for USC in Hawkins home state of California but not sure if that is still on or not.

Really hope we don't lose Hawkins to Illinois. Didnt Rutgers check all the boxes as well? I wish he would come down now and look at the practice center before deciding?

I really like Hawkins a lot and he is playing the same PF spot as Reiber. Maybe landing Reiber is a precursor for Hawkins leaning elsewhere. Hawkins is definitely the better prospect for what I can see.

I think the roster needs some class balance but could use a Shaq Carter or Yeboah type in 2020 in the front court.

Yeah. I mean you take both without question. We need big bodies who can play. Kids get into foul trouble. You need depth

I always had concerns with our ability to land another California kid - it's just so far away. We seemed to hit the mark with Myles Johnson, but recruiting kids 3000 miles away is always going to be a crap shoot, especially for a developmental program like Rutgers.

Totally agree with this as well. Has to be really hard unless the kid has real ties.

With the world getting as small as it is, those things don't concern me anymore. Especially in hoops. These kids have been traveling the country since they were young.

The article certainly sounds like it's between SDSU and Illinois unless someone else swoops in.

Illinois is getting a state of the art practice facility, too. Just completed the football version.

I don’t think facilities will be the deciding factor.

The recruiting needs to improve if Rutgers is going to be a consistent tournament team, no doubt. But right now Pikiell is trying to get *a* tournament team. I see it as a two or three year window depending on how the sophomores develop and who sticks around. After that it'll probably be a step back. That's just the reality for a team like Rutgers. The goal is to raise the floor so that 6-7 B1G wins is the absolute basement and you build back from there.

Look at Northwestern. They had a three year window with the McIntosh/Law/Pardon/Lindsey crew. In the wake of that Collins has actually won some recruiting battles (though the players haven't panned out so far). But Northwestern, as a program, is in a better place now than they were under Bill Carmody or early in Collins' era.

For a more extreme example, how about Texas Tech? They stunk and then Bobby Knight took over and got them to be decent, but they weren't in the tournament every single year. Then they took a step back, but because Knight (and later, Tubby Smith) raised the floor, a coach like Chris Beard was able to come in and turn them into what they are.

I made that connection to but felt it was the other way around a few weeks ago.

I would always prefer a 4 year player vs JUCO...but the player has to be able to add an element to the program in the next 3 years while these sophomores are developing.

Looks like a big miss for RU

A big miss is missing a wide open 3 down by 2 with 3 seconds left.

There are so many variables and moving parts to recruiting. I don't get to up or to down with recruiting stuff. The proof will be when you see them on the court in the middle of their sophomore year. Until then it is mostly fiction.
