I've seen a lot of Cohen needs to go too posts. Not many seem to have confidence that he make the right hire. So.....if there was some truth to the ED rumors and Norvell or Napier was announced as coach on Monday after thanksgiving, would that solidify Cohen as the guy to take us to the future? Or would you still have doubts?

That would definitely put me more on his side. Especially if it were Napier.

To want to fire a coach after two seasons with 13 (maybe 14) wins at a school that averaged 7.1 wins per season during the tenure of the best coach in program history (4.9 wins per season all-time) suggests that you don't have confidence in the person who hired him. Why would you have confidence in Cohen to make the right hire the Monday after Thanksgiving?

I don't understand how coaching under Saban is related to success at Mississippi State. Do those Saban assistants get to bring Alabama talent with them? What Saban assistant has gone on to have success at a place that recruits in the same range as State? Mark Dantonio is the only one that comes to mind. He was Saban's DB coach at Michigan State in the late 90s. The next best example would be Will Muschamp. He was Saban's DC at LSU. Everyone else is either not very successful or at a school that isn't similar to State.

I would feel better if he announced Joe Brady.

If we move on from Moorhead now and cut our losses I'll feel better about the whole damn administration from Keenum on down.

You mean the guy who learned under Moorhead who is succeeding with elite talent and a possible Heisman? No thanks. Sounds familiar.

Funny thing about this post....there’s a distinct possibility you may see one of the names in your post replaced by the other one. Muschamp’s seat is even hotter than Moorhead’s, and Dantonio played DB for South Carolina back in the 70’s (and also is on the outs with Michigan State).

Go look at ULL in 2018 and 2019. Marked improvement.

He’s also coached under Dabo and Saban.

Probably need to add he was fired by Dabo and passed over for the offensive coordinator job by Saban also.

At lot of these coaches aren't going to commit until other dominos fall (FSU hires, USCw makes a decision, Ark, etc., these jobs are several notches above us).

UPIg is not any notches above us. In fact I would sy the opposite. Also, while FSU and USCw used to be more than several notches above us, I think that gap has closed.

MSU is a better job than UPig since Mizzou and A&M joined the SEC and TCU was prompted to the Big 12. Those moves cut UPig's balls off in recruiting.

Secondly, UPig is a complete rebuild while MSU is pretty close to winning the right guy.

I'll give you five words why UPIG is a better job (not necessary where a coach will win more), Wal Mart and Jerry Jones. They have almost unlimited resources, we have very limited resources, plus do reasonably well, you may find yourself head coach of the most valuable sports franchise in the world.

A Saban disciple holds the distinction of being the worst P5 coach in the game today. Why Maryland hired that guy is beyond me. Nick doesn’t have some magic pixy dust that he sprinkles on every coach that leaves there.

I would think a stronger local recruiting base would be more valuable.

Is Notre Dame a better job than Alabama? Because Notre Dame has infinitely more money

Ask Brian Kelly which he prefers: Alabama’s entrance requirements or Notre Dame’s?

That's my point. There's a lot more that determines how good a job is than just money.

Mississippi has the 2nd highest per capita recruiting ground of producing NFL players. That matters a lot.

That stat is true but misleading. While we have a lot of players per capita, we don't have a lot total. We still need a bigger minimum, so this isn't necessarily a big advantage. I wish we were more like Alabama or Louisiana, they have 15 four stars a piece this year, while we only have 6.

The good news is, we have a lot of projectable athletes and JUCOs. That's our real advantage, that and we can easily drive to LA, AL, and all over MS.

Are you one of those guys who thought Mullen would never leave us for Florida?

Absolutely not. Florida is a bigger name school in a recruiting hot bed. I thought he might stay because I wasn't sure if his stubborn arrogance would drive him to stay until he won big or would drive him to the bigger school so he could win big.

Upig has tons of money but has no identity in football. They need Texas talent to have a chance and that's a big challenge since they left the SWC. Also, UPig fans think they should be winning 10 every season - lots of delusion.

If you are the next saban, coaching at Arkansas could get you way more money than coaching at MSU. But it's a hard place to win. Time will tell whether they have just made some bad hires or whether A&M and MIzzou joining the SEC fundamentally changed things for them, but right now, I'd put them slightly behind state as a job. Not meaningfully. And they might jump right back up well ahead of state once the paying players things shakes out. But right now, it's a worse job unless a particular coach places a lot of value on the low probability that they are the next Saban and will be able to be the highest paid coach in the country without changing jobs.

AGree on UPig, but while the gap has certainly closed between FSU and USCw, there's still enough of a gap (especially between MSU and FSU) that how much it has narrowed doesn't affect things very much.

I mean, Arkansas has averaged around 26th in recruiting in the last 4-5 years. That's not that much different from the rest of the lower half of the SEC. I fail to see Missouri's impact on us, sure they have a winning record against us but they typically recruit 10-15 spots lower so it's not due to more talent.

Cohen will be fine if he cuts Moorhead loose now and makes a solid hire this time around. The Moorhead hire was fine initially. It didn’t work out obviously, but it’s always a risk hiring a coordinator. And the resume was there.

We are certainly in a better position than Arkansas right now, but the money and the dedication of the big money boosters gives them significant advantages over us. They can re-establish Texas recruiting ties, particularly with A&M now in the conference. I don't think anyone other than MSU fans would think that Arkansas is a worse job than State's.

They were also several notches below us in the pre-Bowden days. They were a homecoming team. FWIW, they were doormats several (15-20) years after Ole Miss's glory days (which shows you how long it's been since they were a factor)

They are also the only major school in a state with roughly the same population as Mississippi, but they're still not on our level in FB at this point, in my opinion.

What excites people about Napier? I do not know anything about him.
I don't understand why some are very high on Napier for what he's done at ULL, yet not wanting Hud when what Hud has down in his career, including turning around ULL, is more impressive. And when you add that Hud is a local guy who has supposedly said MSU would be a dream job for him, I truly do not understand the disconnect.
