It would be interesting to know if anyone really, genuinely believes that Monty has a ceiling that's higher than moderately above average D1 coach. I'd guess that after year 7, 95% of coaches are fully baked, they are what they are and what they always will be. But maybe Monty can change. Or I guess some might say that Monty has been better than a moderately above average coach.

I mean. I've been on the fire Monty bandwagon since year 2. This start to year 8 looks so much better than past years. Either the players are finally playing well or he's changed his offense. It looks like the offense is different to me. I haven't stared into my screen wondering why we ran up the middle 4 straight times and punting like the last 5 years.

1000%. The sad truth is that the vast majority of people who lose weight or give up smoking and drinking end up regaining the weight and starting smoking and drinking again. It's just really hard to be who you're not. I really hope Monty has a run up the middle sobriety coach walking this journey with him.

It's just not realistic to fire a coach after 1 loss after two winning seasons.

It is pretty clear he cannot put it all together and create a complete team. Never has before and no reason to think he will in the future. But he is not the worst, we have big frustrations, but we have occasional fun it seems. Just keep your hopes low I guess.

He should have been gone at the end of last year. You expect a miracle by keeping him. Time for a change, NOW!

we will see
Brin throws a nice ball at the pylon that hits the receiver right in the hands - Montgomery's fault that he drops it
Brin throws a 3rd down 2nd OT pass behind a receiver in the end zone that should have been six - Coaches Fault ?

Field Goals - missed the 1st one to put the game out of reach , than the 2nd unfortunate miss
Stokes fumble at the 45 yard line is part of the game but a critical turnover - Coaches fault ?

Montgomery's offensive play calling was wide open and aggressive and for a first game they
played their asses off and we all wish they had won....but they did not . This 2022 team has
talent and it's too bad that there is a faction of Monty haters that relish for TU to lose so
they can "shine" on the message board .

My question is this... When TU got up by 10 why did Monty take the pedal off the gas and go conservative in his play calling? That's when TU needs to go for the jugular. Going conservative at that point seemed to be playing not to lose. Next thing you know Wyoming is on a roll and TU is caught off guard. We are not that good that we should ever take the pedal off the gas!

Players made some mistakes, but as mentioned before, playing not to lose when you have a lead will bite you more often than not. It has happened too many times under Phil. Play calling was better, but I would have loved to see Anderson run the ball a couple of more times in the first ot. He got 5 on first down, then followed by 2 passes.

But did he though?

After we got up by 10, Wyoming drove 37 yards for their kicker to make a 55 yard field goal. It was a 55 yarder!!

Tulsa got the ball on the next possession on the 25 after a touchback. 34-27

1st and 10 from 25 - Bill Jackson up the middle for 2 yards
2nd and 8 from the 27 - PASS up the middle to Epps that was incomplete. PI called on Wyoming because he pulled Epps's arm behind his back.
1st and 10 from the 33 - PASS complete to Malachai Jones for 26 yards
1st and 10 from Wyoming 41 - PASS incomplete to stokes. PI on Wyoming for being a bunch of douche's
1st and 10 from Wyoming 26 - Brin ran for 2 yards
2nd and 8 from Wyoming 24 - Anderson rush for 3 yards
3rd and 5 from Wyoming 21 - PASS complete to Epps for 10 yards. Holding on Tulsa negates the 1st down and moves us back 10 yards. - The hold was not the coaches fault
3rd and 15 from the Wyoming 31 - PASS incomplete
4th and 15 from the Wyoming 31 - Long misses a 49 yard field goal just barely to the left.

In this drive there were 9 plays and 5 of them were passes and 1 was a field goal. Where was the gas taken off?

Wyoming has three plays and scores a touchdown as they only worked half the field and I am sure we can all agree that the DB's were not doing a great job yesterday. 34-34

Next drive

Kickoff return to 21 as he fielded it on the 1. He should have let that go into the endzone. Not the coaches fault he made a bad decision.

1st and 10 on 21 - PASS complete to Stokes for 3 yards
2nd and 7 on 24 - PASS incomplete
3rd and 7 on 24 - PASS incomplete
4th and 7 on 24 - PUNT 40 yards to the Wyoming 36

In this drive there were 4 plays ALL but the punt was a PASS. Where is the gas being taken off?

Wyoming fumbles on the 5
Then Stokes fumbles
Then Wyoming misses a field goal from 25 yards out after making one from more than that earlier.

You can hate Monty all you want and that is fine but actually have some facts when you bring your hate. Don't say the man took the gas off when he obviously didn't. He wants to stretch the field and get it into the hands of the WR's that were making awe inspiring catches in the first half. The WR were not making the catches.

We played great despite some stupid miscues on the players not the coaches. Brin fumbling on the second play of the game, Holding that negates a huge play and possibly gets us in the endzone instead of missing a 49 YARD FIELD GOAL that some in the Pros miss as well.

Try again guys. This was our first game and I think we did damn well despite. IF this was Wyomings first game I believe we would have won this game despite the misscues. We still should have won it yesterday.

Right now, I say we lose no more than 2 more games, Ole Miss and Houston. The rest we win. My mind might be changed if we lose to NIU or if we play badly in that game. That will show me that there are not making changes to correct deficiencies. My projection off this game and the players making plays is 9-3

We ran on first down twice after Wyoming got to within 7. We ran on second down another time. These calls put us in behind the chains and into obvious passing situations. Our only real success running was on short third down yardage with Anderson or Brin keeping if the DE came down on Anderson. It isn’t about hating Monty. Overall it was one of his better called offensive games. However I have and will continue to challenge his game management because it has cost us numerous games. Coach Bohl kept us off balance in the 4th and OT with bootlegs and QB run pass options.

I wholeheartedly disagree with you that those two runs put us behind the chains for the whole drive. Out of 13 total plays 2 of them were runs on first down and they were not on consecutive first downs either. The only thing that killed that first drive was the holding call on wade. I am not a Monty fan and I do believe if this team does not achieve success that his tenure will pass. Other than that three and out that we had, we moved the ball down the field in the 4th and in overtime. My post was regarding the statement that he took off the gas once we were up by 10 and I have proven in my post with facts that the statement in question was absolutely false. Again I could care less if you hate Monty or want to question his play calling from the past games. Yesterday he called a good game. The players made a couple bonehead plays. That’s why we lost not because of the HC

The players are NOT prepared --- mental mistakes that continue like this are a reflection of the HC.

Our OL will have to jell in a hurry to have a good record. There will be games we will need a running attack. I expect the line to improve and cut down on the penalties. Farmer is a good coach.

Penalties were not abundant. We moved the ball, had too many inexcusable errors that led to easy touchdowns, and missed 2 important field goals.

So the season is a total crapshoot. No way to predict a record IMO but I suspect we will have surprising wins and dumbass losses like yesterday. My main hope is that we beat Houston and Cincinnati.

The next game will be a better measuring stick for me , I do agree we had no business losing that game , but this isn’t the first time TU has lost the first game of the year. There have been many times they bounce back and have a decent year , not giving up yet, however I’d we lose to NIU next week, we are in trouble.

Monty is 38-47 through 7+ years (take out the first 2 with Bill's players, and he's 22-37 ). That's 45% win rate, so the smart money is on 5-6. I think that's a pretty good picture of who Monty is. 🤷‍♂️ I wish he were something else but no matter how hard I wish and dream, he's still who he is.

I don't see value in tearing through the details on why we lost. End of the day, good coaches have teams that win and bad coaches have teams that lose. I suspect you could look at most career 5-6 coaches and find a bunch of games with a few dumb plays that kept them from being 8-3. But over enough games and enough years, you just gotta accept that's why they're a career 5-6 coach and not a career 8-3 coach, the details don't really matter.
