The Board power was taken when Tate commandeered the AD hire. That happened very swiftly. I’d also tell you Amy Towers who chairs the Board is very close with Keli now.
The AD hire didn’t require a massive buyout. This is a different animal.

We have way too much support staff and should easily cut it in half, but let's stop with the scandalous implications and acting like hiring friends & family is unique here. This is how the world runs and happens in every industry all over the world. His sons make ~$270k combined and are under contract.

The football number is particularly striking: Rutgers spent $75.9 million on football alone, up from about $64.4 million the previous year. About $17 million of that was coaches’ compensation, $11.1M support-staff salaries, $4.5M athlete meals and $2M recruiting.

And here’s the problem:

Rutgers brought in about $146.6 million in total athletic revenue, versus $193.8 million in expenses.

That’s a $47.2 million shortfall!

Keli has a REALLY tough job, but it starts with a complete overhaul of Football! Total gut and redo! Greg has hemorrhaged money from the athletic department! He has fooled everybody with his slick BS talk about “almost there”, and winning championships! Keli needs to start cutting the staff NOW, especially ones without expensive contracts. It’s sickening how much money Greg has wasted for such a garbage product!

Greg is going to get fired. It will be almost impossible to come back from this 0-2 start.

That being said, the OP is reaching at best. Greg has his own issues with hiring but to suggest his coaches are unqualified or getting no show jobs is just stupid. The staff works incredibly hard and many people don’t last long due to the grueling nature of the jobs.
Working long hours and actually knowing what you’re doing is two different things! We have a bunch of unqualified ppl working long hours not delivering results.

Zinn first move fire 3/4 of the support staff starting with the Schiano boys.

You’re saying this because they are losing. Greg has hired the same types of people for the past 25 years. A lot of them went to the NFL with him too. That doesn’t hold water.

Correct ! Past hires who went to the NFL were coaches . The SUPPORT staff in particular his sons who have ZERO experience are dead weight adding ZERO value.

Greg 2.0 bloated staff has been a complete failure and should not be under contract. So yes it holds a lot of water

It’s not just the waste of money that bothers but also what it says about Schiano. I can assure you he genuinely feels he needs all these people and it speaks to his inability to focus on what matters. He’s the kind of guy that will get caught up on some mindless detail and miss the forest from the trees.

That’s revisionist history. It’s well documented on here and in media reports at the time. They went to the NFL with him because he struck out interviewing and attracting people with NFL coaching history. People in the NFL wouldn’t work for him. So he had to come back and raid the Rutgers staff.

Also if they were such great coaches that he brought with him to the NFL. How many stuck in the NFL?

Just to add…there is zero downside for RU. This whole thing is already a dumpster fire. So throw his kids and no-show friends out on their asses. If Greg goes berserk the entire world will learn his three sons and bunch of buddies are being paid by a public institution. Hobbs exposed once again. Zinn looks like the responsible hero. Greg will be so bitter may be forces him to either negotiate reasonable buy-out or may be he is so butt-hurt he resigns.
How does this make Zinn look like a responsible hero? All these people have contracts so all you are doing is reducing the staff number not saving any money (they still get paid)! You need to know how things work before you start your rants. As far as not one person working hard and there being a corrupt scheme, this shows you are just trying to stir the pot. You complain about no bios? Spend some time on Google instead of looking foolish on here and you can get all the bios you want.

“Stir the pot” LOL. We are the joke of college football. I had people I had not seen or talk to in years from the west coast reach out. Umass was national news buddy. And Thank you for proving my point. Only a moron AD/coach/administration would put a bunch of employees with zero experience and zero employment options under contract. So if you are telling me the entire Schiano circus is under contract then that says it all. A chief of staff under contract? His sons are under contract? You put employees under contract that you are afraid to lose or that could get poached. Not a single program in the country wants Schiano’s kids anywhere near their players.

People wouldn’t work for him in 2020s as well. Hence the 2-3 month long searches for the last 3-4 coordinators.

I think what KT is saying is where were all these people 2-3 years ago when me and a couple others were pointing it out? Not saying you are guilty of this. But many people piling on now are willfully ignorant of the facts. This has been discussed ad nauseum. This is old news.

and everyone in this business has contracts. Most low level guys are one year contracts. Only multi year guys are coordinators and as you say people that you are afraid of being poached. Don’t think there are more than 5-6 guys that are on multi year. And that’s larger than normal because Greg had to scramble after a 90 day search to poach the greatest FCS football minds in the greater Dakota Iowa region.

OK boss…I can guarantee that IU doesn’t have hires fresh out of Nescacs with zero coaching and in some instances zero football experience on contracts - period.

Absolutely everyone is under contract in this industry. Especially at state schools. State employees after all. Remember? It would be a bigger controversy and liability if nepo babies were not under contract.

Sure, key or standard program positions. But compare RU’s staff to IU’s and they don’t have even close to the number of non-descript nonsense. I think this convo is getting off topic. The money spent on this staff and the sheer number of them is disgusting. We have 1-AA players because all the money is going to Schiano’s inept family and friends.

There's a lot of rumblings about Greg hiring his people and getting kickbacks. Same with some NIL. It's not only dirty but illegal.

Buddy I pointed this all out 2-3 years ago. Again thanks for waking up to all of this. But it’s no surprise to me. You’re preaching to the choir. But I don’t know how people that follow sports and especially college sports specifically this program don’t know any of this. You have stated over the years that you have multiple kids that have gone through the recruiting process in multiple sports. How do you not know this stuff?

I actually work at a small college and we have strict nepotism rules. I wasn't even allowed to hire another professor's wife to adjunct for a single one off class.
Rutgers has the same policy. And it was posted last year. Apparently someone either looked the other way or someone pushed it through when no one was watching. Yet to be determined. But I have my theory. And have been told by someone within what went down.

Actually seeing the Rutgers website as opposed to message board chatter made all the difference. Looking at titles, bios (or lack thereof), sheer number of unnecessary positions, family/friends…especially in light of perhaps a historic worst two performances to start a season by a B1G program. A consequence of two kids that live their sports means I spend less time on RU football so finding out about this coaching/support staff insanity was shocking.

Understood. When I saw it live at a spring practice in 2023 or 24. I had to dig a little deeper. Spoke to someone on staff that I know and was amazed how massive and stealthily built it had become. It’s like we didn’t have anyone keeping an eye on it for 2 years 😜

Would be great if true because it saves RU a ton of money when they terminate his contract. But I can’t see Greg being that stupid.
I thought so too but I think there's a feeling of he's too important for something like this to matter. I'm not there but I trust the people (plural) that I've heard this from.

Why is that *** clown still our coach? Why hasn’t he been fired?
Because there is no money to fire a coach mid season and rehire another one with a new staff + transfers.

People who pay attention and have followed the team religiously for years are telling others on the board how hopeless our program is right now and nobody ever listens.

Not to me it doesn’t. That’s not how it works. With the dollars and public scrutiny involved, it’s not Tate’s decision. It simply isn’t. It’s never the president’s decision and within his or her power here or anywhere. Google it. AI it.

He may make a recommendation, outline the financial impact, recruit donors and as you say take charge and make the case but any coaching change of this magnitude must get approval from the BoG and perhaps also the BoT (not sure).

Hopefully Tate does want to make a change and hopefully he’s allowed to, but my point is, it’s not up to him.

It’s the ADs decision which will require support from the President at Rutgers. Keli obviously has that. The Board will be on board with that they want. Guaranteed. Only question is finances which Schiano is making a non issue losing to everyone. Choice is obvious.

Is it correct to say all these one year contracts were renewed under Zinn's waatch, coming off a 5-7 season? At some point she has to start taking some ownership.

That is nauseating. Spending at the level of OSU and LSU and Schiano results. WOW
Eliminating half of the bloated staff to normal B1G levels …should be a minimum 4 million savings annually. Still would be around $7 million budget annually…top end of the Conference. These can’t be ludicrous contracts like 2.0. Certainly hope the comment about kickbacks is BS.

Seems like Greg’s family run business is no secret so please excuse my ignorance when I ask why no media or RU haters have exposed it publicly? My wife is RU alumni too and generally interested in most things RU and when I told her about the numbers/kids she had no idea and was totally disgusted. This conflict of interest and insane waste of money is exactly what people should be talking about regardless of the direction of the program. One kid would be bad enough. But three?!? Zero experience. Apparently under contract. This whole thing screams waste and fraud.

Pitchfork and fire crowd is out early. Looking for any reason to crap on the new AD.
Early? She is 14 months in. How much grace period do you want to give to a 7-figure executive? If it is true we spent $20 mil on NIL then we really should have had a better qb room, and additional money could have come from cutting support staff, which everyone but the staff agrees is bloated.

You think the AD who has never coached football at any level (and this is probably true for 90 plus% of ADs) is going to oversee how NIL money is spent on players? Really? That's the gravamen of your complaint about the AD.

Do you know how much work has gone into (1) getting a lot of new NIL; (2) installing a new staff; (3) undoing all the malfeasance and nonfeasance in the 3-5 years that preceded her; (4) working on a jersey patch deal to raise more money?

What exactly are you expecting? She is hand tied with two extremely stupid and expensive extensions. She has been quite transparent that Greg and Pikiell have been given NIL resources to compete, and this year is a wait and see year. Your original complaint is that you were questioning if "all these one year contracts were renewed under Zinn's waatch, coming off a 5-7 season." We don't know what has happened. And guess what? They don't all renew at once. And guess what, it is likely that they auto-renew each year. How about calming down a bit and waiting until she is in 2 or 3 years and has made some coaching changes?
