Coaches tell Goodman Wisconsin wins

In a piece Goodman writes, he talks to various coaches and give quotes from them on their take on the UK/Wisconsin matchup

Who wins?

"Am I crazy to think Wisconsin wins? They have the
size and physicality to defend and rebound on the interior. They have
shot-makers to beat them from perimeter on offense. You beat Wisconsin
by spreading them and driving them ... Is that what Kentucky does?"

"Wisconsin. They can match Kentucky's size. They will dictate tempo."

"Kentucky.
They can sub for Towns and Cauley-Stein. Wisconsin can't do that for
Kaminsky and Dekker. Ulis' ball pressure will disrupt Wisconsin."

"I think Arizona was a really good scrimmage for Wisconsin to prep for
Kentucky, so it wouldn't surprise me if Wisconsin wins. But Kentucky has
Cauley-Stein and Towns -- both of whom didn't play in the game last
year. So, my pick ... I'm really not sure. I think it could go either
way."

"Wisconsin because of Kaminsky, Nigel Hayes and Dekker. They
are a more cohesive unit and won't beat themselves. If Wisconsin makes
more free throws and limits second-chance points, they will win."

"Wisconsin wins. Kentucky hasn't played anyone like them. They are so much more
athletic than Kentucky will think they are. They will go one-on-one and
score, and Kentucky will be surprised. They are very comfortable in a
game in the 50s or 70s. They will score inside and out at a higher
percentage than other teams have against them this year."

There's no doubt that Wisconsin is capable of winning the basketball game. They have a tremendous basketball team. I think they're 20-1 in their last 21 games. Dekker and Kaminsky are studs (and UW has a nice supporting cast).

Kentucky is tremendous as well. They're the favorite for a reason.

Hopefully, UK fans won't show their *** on here as predictions of loss trickle in. One, they're just predictions. And two, Wisconsin is REALLY, REALLY good.

Luckily for us, so is Kentucky
. If the Cats can beat the Badgers w/o Towns and WCS, I think they can handle the task with them.

GBB!!!

Goodman is such a retard. So he goes out and interviews 20 coaches (more or less perhaps), then hand-selects them, of course choosing the likely few that decidedly picked Wisconsin, and included the obligatory Kentucky choice just to try and throw us off the scent.

I doubt there is a coach out there that truly thinks that without a doubt Wisconsin will win against Kentucky. Can they win? Sure, many probably agree that they CAN win.

I would be a lot more concerned about this match up if it were the first time we played them...

We saw this team, their style, their tempo, and match ups last year...without WCS...

They're really good no doubt...won't be a West Virginia cake walk...but I don't know that it will be a dog fight like last year either...

UK is better, has more depth, more size, more talent, better shooting, and more experience than we did last year...the team is a lot hungrier and more confident as well...

Badgers are essentially the same team...but 1 year older...

Dekker and Kaminski are going to have to have career games...one may...but both will not...should Dekker not catch a hot streak game could be easily had...

they won't be playing with reckless abandon like the Irish...they don't have the underdog mentality...

Some of those comments are just flat ignorant.

So Arizona's 6' backcourt was good preparation for our 6'6+ players?

So our players, more than half who have played against every single player in their rotation will be surprised by their athleticism and scoring ability?

I swear. It's no wonder coaches get fired as often as they do. Those statements were just dumb.

They simply are "NOT" near the athletes of say a WCS, or a Towns or the Twins and Booker, hell Lyles as well.

This will be the difference in the game.

We will run Wisconsin out of the gym.

I really want UK to have a signature game. (They've had tons this year but it seems the media is not aware.) Not looking for a blowout just UK doing what they do when they get up for a game. That's good enough.

This will be a competitive game, and Wisconsin has a good chance. But if WCS checks Kaminski, then KAT will stay out of foul trouble and Kentucky will have the advantage.

Well, 3 players who get substantial minutes (Harrison's and Dakari) all played against them, so why would they be surprised by their athleticism? Now Willie didn't play, but my guess is they will be more surprised by his athleticism than he will by their athleticism. No, I am not sure these kids are going to be surprised by anything. Now we may not win, but it won't be because Wisconsin has some mysterious ability that UK hasn't seen. I am really surprised any coach would make that comment. Willie and Karl go against each other everyday, and Dakari. Twins go against each other. Lyles goes against Marcus Lee, yet we are going to be stunned by their athleticism? Consider me puzzled.

Run them out of the gym?

lol

We can and should beat them, yes...but blow them out? No. They're too good. In fact, the 5/5.5 point spread is too high, IMO. Should be 2 to 2.5 at most.

We all know Wisconsin is fully capable of winning. But.....the reasoning behind some of these quotes is just laughable.

Wisconsin a more cohesive unit that doesn't beat themselves? No.

Wisconsin more athletic than Kentucky thinks they are? Most of the players on this team played their players last season. It wont be a surprise.

Wisconsin may well win. But it wont be for those reasons.

If we lose, it will be on Cal, not the players. That's what almost happened Saturday night. 20-26 fg's dunks or layups.

Didn't Willie say that was the most tense he's seen Cal in the locker room? If Cal's tense, so will be the team.

Just took a peek at Wisconsin's schedule and don't see any team played that has even close to our height and length at several positions. Of course I didn't dig in to each one, but based on my knowledge of each from this year, I saw no one that has enough height and length across all positions to give Wisconsin a reference as to what they will be facing on Saturday.

ND is a different case - they are so small across the board that they knew exactly how effective their quickness and spread-out offense would be against us because most teams they've played are probably bigger at most positions. And no matter how fast our bigs are, they are still slower than most smaller guards.

Wisconsin, on the other hand, hasn't really seen much of a team in size and athleticism than our own Cats, so I think their two main stars - Kaminsky and Dekker - will have some serious troubles.

I should add that Kaminsky and Dekkerr don't foul much. In fact, Dekker has had multiple games this year with zero fouls. Kaminsky has had 4 a few times, but I don't think he's fouled out at all (didn't look at every game). This is likely due to the fact that they simply haven't had to body up against bigger players. And, we all know what Kaminsky does when a guard drives into the lane - he just stands there and tries to draw a charge - either a real one or a flop. Can you imagine if he gets somehow mismatched against Lyles, one of the Harrisons or Booker?

To be honest, ND doesn't foul much either, but Saturday they got away with a lot more than they should have. I hope to not see the same thing on Saturday against Wisconsin, but then again I'll be shocked if their slower guys can really stick right with us on defense like ND did - I think they will be fouling more than they're used to, and our defense will prevent another game like AZ - lots of fouls, but plenty of freedom to shoot openly to win.

Wisconsin is so much more composed that they are 2-2 in games decided by 6 or less while we are 4-0. Not to mention the pressure that comes with being undefeated, yet we still keep winning.

Which players are going to go one on one and score?

Dekker obviously can do it, but who else?

Not sure Kaminsky and Hayes have the handle to do it consistently.

Not sure Gasser and Koening have the athleticism.

So, yeah. If they consistently take us one on one and beat us (other than Dekker), I will be shocked. Even with Dekker, I have to think WCS will make his drives to the basket tougher than what he has faced to this point.

Not to mention that we have played someone like them... we've scrimmaged ourselves every single day in practice. We have 7 footers going against other 7 footers all the time. Our guards are running against other 6 foot 6 guys, our 5'9 guy is going against bigger guards every practice. Maybe it isn't a game setting, but these guys have faced better competition day in and day out than any other team in the country.

Every week it seems we are facing a team like we have never seen before, if you listened to these experts UK should be a 10 loss team by now.

Gooberman thinks Bennett is COY, so we can't expect much from that clown. I would like to know who these coaches are though.

It would have most definitely been on Cal had they not pulled it out Saturday night. His strategy on both offense and defense was quite puzzling. The defense we have seen before with the other team running layup drills throughout the game. He said we have to find a better way to defend the pick and roll, well I hope he figures it fast as it has only been going on for two months now. Not a big surprise what ND was going to do yet we could not defend it and made zero adjustments which is par for the course. On offense his strategy completely took our guards out of the game. Andrew driving and lobbing to WCS should have been a common scene in that game yet we only saw it once. The guards were relegated to standing 30 feet from the basket and wait to throw it to KAT on the block. KAT came up huge but with so many weapons on your team, why play with just one.

I will not be bothered one bit should we lose to Wisconsin because they just outplayed us and were the better team that night. However if we lose because of bonehead coaching in a big time game, that will be tough to take.

Yes, Wisconsin could win, yes they might be 20-1 in their last 21 games, but we are 38-0 in our last 38 games and nobody has found that blueprint just yet, a couple almost did, but still failed. It will be a hard fought battle, but I think UK wins by 7.

Not much "logic" in this post. There is absolutely no way to make this type of claim before the game even starts.

If we lose, couldn't it just be because Wisconsin played an outstanding game?

I know a couple of you guys can't wait to bash Cal, but couldn't you at least hold off until he actually loses one?

ND went completely against the game plan. They were supposed to spread it out and shoot 3's. They went right after Ky's bigs and used their propensity to block shots to get second chance points. They screened the crap out of UK and UK made the mistake of switching instead of staying out like they have all year. It took Cal forever to adjust but he finally did late in the game. So to act like ND stuck to the plan was wrong. Now I'll agree, cal didn't adjust quickly enough but he did. He was out coached for about 35 min but for the most important 5 min he made the right adjustments.

Um.....we were playing a team that started a 6'5 power forward and there one post bench big was also 6'5. If he hadn't jammed post scoring down their throats I would have been a lot more upset than if he "got other people involved." and we lost to missed jump shots. We have been playing basketball for awhile so we know that shots closer to the rim have a higher percentage of going in than anywhere else. If Notre Dame is going to let you take 2 ft shots in the post then you take as many 2 ft shots in the post as you can. That's just basic basketball.
