Coaches stupidly going for 2

Has anyone else noticed this new trend in college and the NFL? I see it every game. Last night, down 7-6, USM goes for 2 instead of tying it. They lost by one point. Today, the Falcons go for 2 early and don’t convert. They lost by one point. I just don’t understand why you would score the first touchdown of the game and then go for 2, but it’s becoming more and more common.

I could kind of understand it last night. Young, inexperienced coach thinks he can build excitement. But not from an NFL coach. Then to me they both compounded the mistake by not going for 2 on the next TD. Decent chance you get that point back. Worst case both times is you lose by 2 instead of 1.

I’ll never understand when a team is down 15, score and go for 2 on the first touchdown. If you get it, great that you got the hard one out of the way, but if you don’t, it gives the other team the distinct psychological and strategic advantage of knowing you now need two scores to win the game.

Yeah, but you also give yourself the strategic advantage of knowing you need two scores to win the game.

Going for two before the 4th quarter doesn't make sense because you can't know whether or not you'll need that one point at the end of the game.

Atlanta went for two in the 2nd quarter in hopes of being up 21 instead of 20. Of course they had no idea what the situation would be at the end of the game. There were nine scores after that point. That's why in the 2nd quarter you just take as many sure points as you can.
