We have at least 11 guys who can play, with 4 of them going to be productive at least 80% of the time.

Duval, Grayson, Trent, and Bagley are all guaranteed winners.

The 2nd tier for me is:
Carter, O'Connell (not just because of one exhibition game, the kid has awareness). These two will give us a few games where they are not distinguishable from the top tier.

The next tier:
Javin, Bolden, Vrank, Tucker (just need consistent defense, rebounding and high percentage attempts from this group). The one who will get the most minutes will be the one running and fighting the hardest. Shoot when open.

The Goldwire tier:
He's going to be there when Duval needs a blow and when we still want to run.

That probably means it's a 7 or 8 man rotation and 2 guys will be frustrated with their PT. Jack White is not going to play very much. He seems mature enough to just enjoy his role and be a great teammate.

Carter is a 2nd tier? O'Connell is ahead of Bolden? WHaaaaaaa?!!! HAHAHA. Carter may actually be 2nd best player on the team

First tier, second tier...doesn't really matter. We have a captain in Allen who happens to be a stud, surrounded by a bunch of young guns that can bring it.
Unfortunately at least one kid who could help, won't get much game time.

We have the horses this year, better than last season because these guys are gonna fight and are more physical, ingredients needed to contend in the NCAA tournament. As anyone knows, the officiating changes when we leave the cozy and finesse way the ACC is officiated.

No it's not a bit harsh. Who's the coach? Who was the preseason All American?
K is the best, he just wasn't as sharp last season as we needed him to be, nor was Grayson.
That's where they both probably "bear the responsibility," and both of them will drive the team this season.
I think it's a bit harsh.

You do realize we follow a program whose coach is very blunt, tough, and curses like a sailor don't you?
This isn't flower picking, and I'm sorry you think it's harsh, but if you do I'd suggest you not sit anywhere near earshot of K during a game.

Unnecessarily, pointlessly harsh, that is.

Sounds like you can't handle my saying so.

If you say so. We disagree on most things Datt, I accept it, and probably would be more stunned if you did agree with me.
The Only thing we have in common is we pull for Duke, which is a miracle in and of itself. Have a good night.

Finally got a chance to watch the press conference. Think he was quite honest in who he expects to be in the regular rotation, with others potentially having opportunities to carve out niche roles. I liked what he had to say about where the team is now and where we can be, but that it’s going to be a long process. Ideally one of those guys or multiple of Alex, Jordans and Vrank can step up and be consistent contributors when their number is called. Looking forward to seeing them next week in the exhibition.

Agree.

Well, we could ask why we'd use that 13th scholarship if we're only going to play 12, too; where do we draw the line? Also, what's the sense of playing anyone who isn't prepared to help us win? Development happens in practice first. On the flip side, there are plenty of examples of a short rotation being very, very successful for us, but we only pay attention to that when we lose, and we scapegoat it as if it was K's preference, rather than his best judgment. It's like the idea of how the back-up QB is always the most popular guy in town.

I have no doubt K would greatly prefer to have a rotation of 8 players. That includes years when we only go 6 or 7 deep. He's not going to play an 8th guy just for the sake of it. I want my kids to get dessert b/c they ate their dinner, but there's a standard they have to live up to.

Personally, I'd love to see a rotation of 9. But at what cost? I don't want that 9th guy getting time if he's not ready, and while it makes me nervous, same goes for the 8th guy, maybe even the 7th.

And therein is why we use more scholarships than we might use in a game: Perhaps Goldwire's play in practice earns him game time, but perhaps it manifests itself in preparing Trevon to be more effective in more minutes.
I thought one of the reasons we went after Goldwire was because the defense he played in high school especially against Duval during a game.
I always looked at the Goldwire recruitment like the Ron Artest to LA. I'd rather have you play with me then against me on the defensive end. I get what your saying in terms of scholarships and why we use them. I was just hoping K sticks to his word about needing to develop a longer bench.
I think we all can agree as the season progresses Allen, Baigley, Duval, Carter, Bolden, Trent and Javin will see the bulk of the minutes I just don't see the need to press them into long minutes early in the season.

What was fun to watch was
- the bigs all going at it and each had their moments. Bagley, Carter seem to be the starters now but Bolden and Javin were good too. Would love to see a 4 bigs rotation.
- Duval being dogged by Jodand G. Great to see a player (Jordan G) show his value and compete. Not only did he pressure Duval but he hit shots and made plays. Duval is such an athletic freak that sometimes I think he forgets that he's also very skilled or tries to show off that skill rather than just overwhelm his opponent athletically. Once he puts those two together mentally, watch out.
- the best contest was Gary v Grayson. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of them. Exchanging shots, game talking and getting at it. Grayson is Grayson, but I think Gary will be really good for Duke this year.
- Alex (along with Jordan G) were my surprises. You can tell he has worked on getting stronger and putting on weight. You can see he has but Obviously he needs more. To me he has all the intangibles, skilled, attitude, competitiveness and composure. To take that 3 and hit it for the game winner was huge.

I think the goal is not to 'have' to press them into longer minute, especially in the early going. Last year our team seemed to lack a killer instinct....meaning we could get leads, but then we failed to bury teams.

I don't know much about the why and when of Goldwire's recruitment. I figured he was a guy expected to contribute as an upperclassman.

I'm getting hung up on phrasing with the bold... K wants more depth, but looking back on last year, I don't think he's saying something like, "Shoot, I should have developed Javin more." Maybe he has done something differently this off-season and in practice that will facilitate growth and a role for some guys, but I just see his comment about depth more as a lament of how players developed (or didn't), rather than a reflection on his own use of subs.

Development is a two way street. Guys have to show they can play too. It can hurt a kid more to shove him into a role he isn’t ready for.
Completely agree- it’s more than just did billy get two min in the game, how will he develop otherwise. Sometimes you can do more harm than good throwing the kid in.

Ask Chris Burgess. Ask DeMarcus Nelson. Ask Matt Jones. Ask Amile, Casey Sanders and Ricky Price. All guys who were asked to something they weren’t capable of or do more than they could offer.

I think Matt is probably your BEST example there.IMO he had the BEST opportunity of the group yet really petered out it could be argued after his Sophomore campaign.

Matt was asked to do everything from run point to be a second scorer to be defensive stopper. He never really had a chance to settle into any of those roles except D man his sophomore year.

I think Ricky was a couple of years too early. If he was two years younger he could’ve settled into a better time line. He unfortunately wasn’t ready to takeover post Grant.

Ricky Price had more natural ability than any of those others you mentioned, IMO...Way ahead of Matt for instance, in pure basketball talent. Its unfortunate he could never find that niche in his game to blossom, because he always appeared on the cusp of doing so. Former Winston-Salem sports editor Lenox Rawlings once described Ricky as "that enigmatic man of 1000 comebacks." OFC

Exactly my point. Asking someone like that to do too much can derail their what potential they may have. Not saying it’s the only factor, but it’s a factor.
Respect you Hokie but disagree with ya sir. Those guys mentioned were great guys to have in the program but are role players, Amile maybe the exception. Only question I have about him was never in 5 years at Duke did he develop a 10-15 footer. Matt is a warrior, gave his all, but only a 20 minute max guy imo. Perfect in the role on 15 team, but not talented enough to be a 30-32 minute guy this past season. Doesn't mean I don't like him.

Hokie are you saying staff asked TOO MUCH of some of those players, thus "derailing their potential?" Just asking for clarification. Do you think its more staff, OR said player simply never living quite up to potential? For instance I think Matt Jones did have max opps to do so (you said he never had a chance "to settle" into certain roles). IMO, he had ample opportunities and as Mr Mac mentioned above, he was simply a 20 minute per game guy at best.

I think we got about as much as we could from DeMarcus, Amile(although Mr Mac makes valid point he could have really solidified his game w/jumper), Price never blossomed fully, Burgess I remember wasnt what we thought he would be(seems I remember him being abysmal from FT stripe, and his dad had issues w/K). Casey gave us some good moments, but really only on defensive end...Ok thx buddy, OFC

Using a Coach K analogy...."every player runs their own race." In a sense, it's the same as a team.

Would it have been nice if Matt had developed his jumper more? Of course. Was it ideal he had to play almost 33 minutes/game? Probably not. I think semantics will tell you that on some nights, Matt should have played that many minutes....on others, less would have been more. He was really our only perimeter defender last season, with exception to Frank. But Frank struggled on that side too....and we later learned he was battling foot issues most of the season, which probably contributed to that. I also think Matt's leadership on the floor also played a huge part in the minutes he got.

Well at least Mrs Burgess was at a lot of the games......for that I am thankful we had Chris.

Chris' dad was there a lot. I know they thought Chris should have been more of an outside player but he was needed inside. It was just how things worked out and I understand why he transferred. I had a great seat the night of the Fla, game that year. Right above Duke's entrance into the locker room. Mr. Burgess met Coach K and the entrance and I'm not say they said was intense but it was serious. Talked for a good minute or before Coach K going in to be with the team. Chris transferred the following year and had a decent college career but I can't help but think if he had stuck around the next two years he would have been a much better player and spent so extended time in the NBA. Of course that was about the the Duke couldn't get any bigs or bangers into the league. OFC

Some info from Duke's practice yesterday...

Nothing too surprising there. I think mock drafts have Duval at like 21st overall.

Hopefully, he uses that as motivation to want to get better. The athleticism and measurable are there.

It's funny scouts say that about Duval yet Tyus Jones can't get off the bench in the NBA.

I can see that about Javin. An absolute freak, 6-10, energy out the roof, man you can't teach what he has. The NBA loves guys like him. The shooting is secondary.
My selfish thinking is for him to hang in Durham at least thru his junior season. We are lucky he plays for us.

That’s exactly what I’m saying. I think you and @Mac9192 are misreading my point. Because of unexpected recruiting issues, defections, etc., the guys I mentioned were all asked to play a role that they weren’t ready to play. Maybe they did end up being the players they would have been all along, but IMO, their career arc was affected by having to fill a spot they weren’t ready for. That’s all.

In some cases weren’t ready for, in some cases weren’t meant to play. I think you could put Ricky, DeMarcus and Burgess in the weren’t ‘ready for’ category. The others, it probably wasn’t meant to be. But who knows. With time and grooming maybe they could have amounted to more. Carrawell made so much out of less than most had. He’s the exception, not the rule.

In today's NBA, point guards have to be able to score. Tyus can run a precision offense, but he hasn't proved consistently to be a threat making shots or attacking the rim. That's his main drawback right now. He also doesn't possess many of the physical tools today's point guards do.

In my previous post I mentioned Tyus not possessing some of the needed skills or physical-style for the NBA....that's not an issue for Javin. Like you, I love his length, energy and awareness. He has NBA 'tools', for lack of a better word. It's just going to take him a little longer to get there....but make no mistake, he will.

I'm having a hard time understanding your point. I don't know whether I agree or disagree b/c I don't understand it.

Ricky served a suspension for academics his senior year and never got back in sync w/ the team. DeMarcus was injured most of his first 2 seasons.
