Some great comments on his thought process in recruiting a kid and some of things that will make him stop recruiting a kid.

It’s all about me, I don’t need to be coached, play a 2-3 zone, I’m good.” Hey, in the process of recruiting, they just don’t come here. Or we figure out who those guys are during the recruiting process, and we kind of shy away. What shying away means is that we just don’t call as much, we don’t see them as much. I’m not trying to tell a kid, “Well we didn’t think he was any good,” no. We just see it. I just tell my staff that we can’t be recruited. We’re supposed to be recruiting, which means that we’ve got to get the information. You need us to be a hat on the table, and you’re spending my time and money – well, the school’s money – for me to travel to see a kid who just wants us to be a hat on the table.”

Calipari brought up a recent conversation he had with an elite recruit to drive home his point.

“I talked to a kid the other day, asked him what he was looking for,” he said. “[The recruit said] “I want the ball, I want to be able to do what I want to do, I want to be able to stay out there, do this and this.” I said, “Okay, tell me where you want your life to go?”

“I want to be an NBA player,” the recruit said. “I want to be a top-five pick.”

“Really? How long do you want to be in the league?”

“15 years.”

“Well why are you talking to these other three? They don’t even have any other NBA players? So they’re going to tell you they’re going to let you do whatever you want.”

Jalen Green?

I don't think Cal will talk about a current recruit. If something changes, we might still have chance to get him. (like Green is being recruited by Clarke, so i don't think Cal would launch comments about him)

I feel like this has to be about last year's recruit.

He's probably talking about 100's of recruits he's recruited over the course of his career, some of which he's probably even coached. He's talking about recruiting high school egos in general.

Cal's niche is honesty, blunt honesty.
This is exactly why he's been so successful. Brutal honesty, some love it and some hate it. The recruits that love it are the ones we get.

Sometimes I get aggravated with Cal's coaching but I've always loved his honesty and what he teaches these young guys, not only about basketball, but about life.

If I was the parent of one of these recruits, how could you not be excited about your son being under Cal's leadership. It truly is a win win situation. If he goes Pro, great and if not, he will be successful no matter what he chooses.

Man I love Cal and suspect that was about Mcdaniels or someone like that . I too don't think he was referencing any current recruit though if he was it would be Green or Barnes as those 2 seem to have that moronic ME ME ME mind set.

Cal did not name the recruit and if it was Green it would only be because Cal has quit recruiting him. My source says Cal is no longer recruiting Green.

I like his tone. He's not directly taking aim at any particular school, but he's mocking the lesser programs that have to feature desperate methods and make absurd promise of shots, starting roles, and minutes. I'm glad Cal is employing this method with the kids he's recruiting. They need to hear how absurd it is that they're taking the way of the cuck and the lazy man's path to the league.

Or he is talking about a current recruit. And cal is being cal. Were what he says hides the fact that its still a recruiting pitch. U want the ball? Why do u want other schools and the ball. U want the ball, here ya go. U come, u come, u dont, u dont. I got to recruit others. Who ever wants the ball! Take it

For all we know it’s a recruit he made up. He could say he talked to anyone based on his history of recruiting all kinda players and make it sound real. I don’t like to speculate on who it could be. We honestly don’t know why anyone was stopped being recruited and why.

Either way, it’s a statement he’s making to address the climate of the recruiting landscape. He is driving home a point and wants particular people to hear it.

Smart stuff imo

I agree . He would never say who it was and nobody really knows. What if Green is totally different than how he’s perceived. I’d hate to lose a kid based on speculation is all.

Here's a whole interview with Cal about recruiting. Has the above in it plus some other great nuggets. Also, love when he says, "We started 35 freshmen, 35 of them. In the history of our game, no one has done that in a ten-year period. No one has done that in a 40-year period. So if you want that, you have to come here and take it, I’m not going to promise you that. And if you’re as good as you say, why do you need to be promised? I can’t tell you how many shots you’re going to get, but I can promise you it’s not going to be more than probably 17. You’re not taking 30.”

Plus another good one is, "By us recruiting, they think that verifies them as a professional player. We’re like Hawaii, everyone wants a visit, they’re just not coming here. I get it, I understand it. But it’s our job, my job, to figure out what it is. The kids that we’ve gotten are the kids that were supposed to be here, and the kids that went elsewhere, they shouldn’t have come here. My issue is, how much of my time and money recruiting kids that wanted to be told stuff that I was not willing to say? I’m not changing.”
