My only concern on that is after a long gainer (especially on a pass), 40+ yards. Sort of turns the 40 second clock into a 30 second clock. I guess the clock could keep running and the refs could signal the start of the 40 second clock separately like the refs do in lacrosse with respect to the 60 second clock after a shot on goal.

I'd say the only way to shorten games is to stuff in fewer amd shorter commercial breaks. Lots of teams already have uptempo offenses.

I know that we as humans can often be cynical, but I don't see it that way as that would only defeat the purpose. I think that its probably an earnest attempt to get college games closer to the 3 hour NFL time. It's a step in the right direction. Another thing that would help would be to shorten halftime.

In this case, I don't think it's cynical at all. I think it's just realistic.

The networks don't care about the length of TV time-slots. They just want to cram in more commercials. It's a money grab. It'll probably lead to longer and/or more frequent commercial breaks which will make games more unpleasant to watch both on TV and in person.

But it's just guesswork for now. We'll find out over the course of the next couple/few seasons.

if they wanted longer commercial breaks they'd just extend them in the name of "player safety". These moves are not going to increase ads, though we will probably see some 5 or 10 second drops introduced during lulls in action.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that in the 10 years I spent at the NFL the concept of shortening game time to increase ad revenue was a front-burner topic at all times.

It's a business, first and foremost.

They should follow some of the rules from the XFL, which includes running the clock after an incomplete pass. This is good though, games are too long.

I’m complaining the games are too long but would be fine with eliminating all but one commercial per quarter and not having the $100M.
