Cliff & the High pick

Anyone notice the action when Cliff sets a high pick? I know that Cliff is not the widest body on the court but it seems to me that the picks he sets at the top of the key are relatively useless. He rarely gets in to any kind of position to force the on ball defender away from our guard or slow him down. For some reason, I see him often set up behind the defensive player, rather than to one side or the other. Not sure if this is due to a reluctance to pick up a moving screen foul or he is just not good at it yet. Hope it can improve because it is a big part of Pikes game.

Michigan did a great job defending. Credit to them.
With the pick action, it's also the job of the ball handler to set up the defender and lead him into the screen. If both Cliff and the ball handler are not in sync with this action, we get nothing.

I thought we should have went with Ron more on the pick and roll as he was the only guy on the floor that was effective scoring inside.

But again, credit to Michigan. They were locked in defensively for 40 minutes. There's a reason we never went on a run.

I think he’s afraid of picking up a foul which he should be because of how Myles constantly got called for things that other big bigs do every night with impunity.

I didnt write the OP due to last nights game alone. Just something that I have noticed for several weeks. I get the worrying about picking up a foul thing like MJ use to but if there is no advantage to him setting the high pick for the guard, then all it does is take him away from the basket and out of rebounding position.

He either needs to get better at setting the picks and timing it right with the guards or they need to stop doing it.

It's bc the main reason for the play is to get Cliff rolling downhill to the basket. Paul doesn't need a good hard screen. It's enough

This was the Play run with Myles - problem was he would be called for a moving pick.

Some of those picks were fake picks and immediately sprinting to the hoop for a lob.

They get a lot of dunks on the pick and rolls

No doubt this is true and he is trying to set a "bad" pick in that case. Those are not the plays I am talking about. There are plenty where he is not cutting to the basket and his pick does not slow down the defender. Without slowing or picking off the on ball defender there is no reason for the opposing 5 to step up and open up the lane or get a mismatch.

I am a Cliff fan and love his development but if you watch these plays you will see he is lacking there. Setting a pick is one of the easier things to do on a bball court

He seems the last couple of games to be setting the pick much farther out from the basket; earlier it seemed like they were setting the pick closer to the foul line and the pick and roll was working very well
On the converse side he needs a lot of work defending the pick and roll as he is constantly getting caught out of position because he overcommits

We used to sometimes run it from the left wing letting Paul go to his right and get into the lane

Haven't seen much of that recently

Dickinson was throwing hip checks early and often. If he does that on the road he picks up fouls. That the Big and how games are reffed.

The offense is run from the high post- they are not trying to free a three point shot with a pick from the five. The goal is to score a deuce in the paint .

Cliff seems more interested in the roll to the hoop than the pick.. but I'd rather he miss the pick than MOVE and get called. Michigan was allowed to MOVE into picks.. Rutgers would not have been.

And a lot of effective picks are the ball-handler using the pick position properly with timing and space. We don't really have that kind of ball-handler/penetrator.

I did notice Cliff was once VERY LATE in seeing that PM was penetrating to alley-oop to him... Paul looked over his shoulder as if to say... WEEEELLLLLLL.. WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DIVE TO THE RIM? Too late!

Still cannot believe Mag was called for a hip check.. while he had the ball.. for a guy runing thru him to stay with his man... might have been fair had Mag actually done anything to cause contact.

Another charge call was R ballhandler driving and his defender trips over his own teammate and goes sprawling... clearly that needed to be rewarded with a foul on us and the ball to Michigan.

SO MANY PHANTOM CALLS.
