That's in the Top 25, and they've only been playing D1 ball for 55 seasons.
15 of those have come in the last 20 seasons.

If the standard is CWS appearances, then no, they don't have any, but the main point remains: Cliff Godwin has not taken them anywhere they haven't been recently.

There seems to be a rising sense that he is the guy if McDonnell turns us down.

He helped Ole Miss get to Omaha so he’s pretty much a miracle worker. And he’s done very well at ECU. Obviously it wouldn’t be the huge name hire many have been banking on, but I think he would do very well here.

Thoughts?

I really don’t care if he helped OM out or not, we shouldn’t even be bringing up stuff like that at this point.

Cohen made some very bold statements and if he doesn’t hit a grand slam with this hire (a freakin stud coach), well I just wouldn’t know what to think.

Eta - I’m not singling you out for saying that because it seems thats the biggest talking point about this guy. Im saying this because we were told a coach with multiple CWS appearances and now we are talking about a coach who ‘helped’ OM get to the CWS. Ridiculous

this has been a tough and unusual situation for an AD. He has to fire a coach 3 games into a season after a super regional run. Construction of stadium and team and fans in early season turmoil.
Although our fans may hate his thoughts now on the possible hire it seemed to calm the fan base and help right the ship. I think the team needed that and believe Cohen thought he had his guy. I never saw any major support or talk from the team on Henderson, so maybe this brought the team together.
Lastly how and when to you work a hire like this? 1 has a season over 2 weeks ago another is over Saturday but yet State keeps on advancing. Maybe the new coach doesn’t want to distract from his future teams run and is solid? Or maybe their ADs have used this run to renegotiate contracts. Either way it’s tough for all involved

You are right. He didn't guarantee it. But he did say hall of fame coaches were interested and we Are going to pay at the top of the pay scale.

So if he doesn't get one of those kinda people then he couldn't close the deal.

Godwin checks all the boxes in the entire quote that was mentioned by another poster. So, it’s really hard for me to understand anyone being pissed at Cohen if he is the guy.

- Multiple appearances in Omaha (as assistant at LSU and OM...he NEVER said as HC explicitly)
- Serious experience as a HC (3 regionals in 4 years at ECU and one super)
- Someone we will probably have to pay over $1 million to leave his alma mater (paying at the top of the scale).
- Someone the fans would be very happy with

I know now what you are getting at, but it's obvious that Cohen was aiming higher when he made that statement.

Henderson doesn’t check the “payscale” or “guy the fans would be happy with” boxes. He also never coached in a Super Regional until this year, so saying he has “serious” head coaching experience when he’s only been at it 6 years at age 58-59 is also an extreme stretch. Polk obviously doesn’t check em all either, but in his heyday Polk was on the same level as Schloss / McDonnell, so I think that’s another bad example.

I'm not sure how anyone expected this to go any different. The second Cohen started flapping his gums about all the big-time coaches that were interested, trips to Omaha, etc. along with the optimism among the fans, I knew State karma was about to bite a lot of folks on the ***. There's still a little time though, and good Lord do I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.
