Martini in the game I felt led to less complete breakdowns as he was normally in the right place and communicated like no other player. He did have more lateral quickness then Ace (not my a lot or enough). Martini would box out, but not sure it helped and obviously he cant DREB like Ace.

evanmiya stats that show point per possession (adjusted for SoS) do point ever so slightly to Ace being our "best" or most effective defender. Jeremiah and Martini were real close behind.

Stats have some value but only 1 piece.

Did Ace improve defensively throughout the year? Yes, but not enough.
I guess saying a e is the best defender on the team is like saying he's the tallest midget. But yeah I agree he should have been even better. I would have liked to see what he looks like in a more structured system, offensively and defensively. Thing is when your team is trash you tend to be less disciplined because you feel you have to do extra things to win..

Ace and Dylan on the roster completely thinned out the amount and type of player that would come to RU.
I can buy that except EVERY other lottery pick that is a one and done made the NCAA tournament

Why would those teams be able to get players to play alongside 1 and dones and we couldnt?

Talent evaluation, roster construction, and lack of NIL all mixed together answers that

how much were we paying J Will...a big reason why the season was bad was him...he was lauded as a top Pike transfer....rose petals from respected poster saying if only this guy got into the lineup last year things were going to happen, he did and was very good and then teams had film on him and was basically neutered the last 7 games.....so big expectations from him to be a leader and the consistent guy who would be the 3rd leading scorer and bring defense and injuries aside early on that never ever ever happened.

another miss for Pike on recruiting much like Hyatt...a guy that contributes but takes up space on a scholorship. Not good enough for what Rutgers needs...same thing when Pike brought in Simpson...not good enough for what RU needs. Too many of those from Pike given his huge whiffs with Jones and Griffiths.

The coaching staff had to have had bigger expectations from J Will and he failed and now we want to bring him back another year...another Hyatt 5th year season where he contributes but nowhere near where it needs to be and he probably makes good coin

Highlights don't help much.....does show how bad Derkack is defensively....and somerville lack of help on one plasy

Derkack played the 6th most minutes this season.

Season was lost when HC Pike sacrificed offense to have JWill (3rd minutes played), Davis (5th minutes played) and Derkack (6th minutes played) provide defense.

And then they provided near zero defense (along with near zero offense).

At least HC Pike tried to upgrade over LS and Ogbole but ultimately couldn't get it done (for reasons outside his control it seems).

Substitute Clif and Mag (as this thread is suggesting) over JWill, Davis and Derkack.
Ace, Dylan, Mag, Clif as a starting lineup.

I highly doubt everyone says Ace and Dylan are a problem on the team.

What's a Luka?

I wish we can find the 4 or 5 possessions so we can really see what happened. Who was on the floor? Who was guarding who? Where was potential help? Can we pinpoint a potential breakdown with the help? How bad did Martini really get burned?

Open ended because I am not sure.

I do know the last possession Derkack was bullied to the basket by Pierce without a screen I believe.

because they knew that its an audition for Dylan and Ace. Lets be honest, thats the goal, the goal was not ncaa tourney, the goal was to showcase those 2 guys. I get why players wouldnt want to be part of that. Pike got rooked into this and fell for it.

Guesses
1. 1 and dones are typical recruited by top schools
2. Most of your data is pre NIL
3. Top schools may have budgets allowing a better fill of the roster
4. We had 2 of them
5. Other schools probably had a lot of returning players and a core. Dylan and Ace became our core and that was the problem

That isn't true. Every team that had two top five picks did that, yes. Why were they more successful at getting players to surround them? They were all (literally all) blue blood programs. The list was posted in another thread, it was like Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Kansas, and UConn. We were BY FAR the worst program to ever get two top five draft picks in one season. It should not be a surprise that we also had the worst results.

i was saying this year every projected lottery pick is playing in the ncaa tournament this particular year not year over year
