Cleveland Indians change their name to..

I guess i'm gonna stir some people up by asking this, but what's wrong with or offensive about the name "Indians"? I understand "redskins", but Indian isn't offensive, is it? I mean, is it different than Cowboys?
Video didn't have Pete Vaughn striking out Parkman. Not impressed.
But seriously, teams picked mascots that demanded respect and fear. I don't get all this suddenly being offensive. Nobody ever wanted to name their team the Cleveland Bedwetters or the Chicago Premature Ejaculators.

The winged logo is actually my one quibble in this very solid presentation. It reminds me of a former Angels logo.
Chief Wahoo was about as belittling and insulting as a mascot can be towards a group of people, short of having the logo be of someone mid-kill of another.
Long ago, there began a push to stop stereotyped and comical mascots that represent minorities.
Think of it as- they have already been shat on for hundreds of years and their cultures decimated, lets not use a cartoon depiction of them for sport and revenue.
Now the counterargument is things like- 'well what about Minnesota, shouldnt they change the name of the Vikings?!?!' or the really absurd 'Tampa Bay should change their logo since its offensive to Pirates!!'.
As for Cleveland's name, I think its hard to stick with a name when you change the mascot for being offensive. At that point, clearly the issue is the name of the team too.
Across the US, cities and states are named for various Native American tribes and native language is used for countless geographical landmarks like rivers, lakes, mountains, etc.
I dont think we should rename all the states, towns, rivers, etc since they werent named those things then given a goofy mascot for entertainment and revenue production.
I think its the oppression/minority angle that separates 'Cowboys' and 'Vikings' from 'Redskins' or 'Savages'.

That's a liberal way of saying "intent" isn't it? Chief Wahoo was not there to "belittle or insult" anyone, except those looking to be insulted or belittled.
So why not change the damn mascot from a "goofy mascot" to a real figure, why change the whole damn name to something stupid like Guardians?

Someone asked why its happening and I explained. You seem to have interpreted my explanation as me taking a side in this and being one to then defend that side.
I listed a common explanation for why the mascot isnt just changed, so no need for me to list it again. But to give you actua examples to highlight the point, nobody would name a team the 'Nashville African-Americans' or the 'Seattle Asians'.
Personally, I think it was good to get the obviously terrible ones like 'Savages' and 'Redmen' out as a first step. After that?...there is no right or wrong and only an ever changing social temperature for what to do.
Thank God we got us a Natty and all of us old non-snowflakes will be dead soon.
We won't have to put up with all this touchy feely, try-and-be-kind ******** in Heaven.

It I were starting a team, it would be named after a local animal or idea/experience.
Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy, Colorado Rapids, etc.

I would imagine it has to do with the actual term "Indians". There has been a cultural move for a while now to start referring to Native Americans by their correct nomenclature. Calling them Indians stopped making sense about 500 years ago when it was realized that Columbus did not actually land in India.
Thats The Black Keys' song Little Black Submarines. Its a pretty well known song and the band is from around Cleveland.
I imagine the name change is getting ahead of the curve.
I personally am all about the geographic correctness, no dog in the political correctness fight. I mean, the term Indian should never have been used in the first place. Columbus and crew thought they were in India so they called the locals Indians. Honest mistake considering the time. I always find it interesting that the term stuck once they figured out it wasn't the case. I would assume people from India would be as upset as anyone could be about it... It's their culture/country getting "misappropriated." I have a few Indian friends and never heard a word about it though.

Do I find a fighting leprechaun offensive? No I dont.
Do I find the term 'Fighting Irish' offensive? No I dont...and I am a large % Irish.
I am a white straight male so I really dont feel oppressed, marginalized, or shat on.
If ND wants to change their mascot, cool. Have at it.

The ND name 'Fighting Irish' was created halfway thru the school's existence. They were the 'Catholics' before that. There is no clear reason why they are called the Fighting Irish so if the intent wasnt there to insult a group of people and it doesnt insult the people now, is it an issue?
Many who dont feel offended by certain terms or names get all bent out of shape(offended) by society pushing to change those terms or names and as a result they demand clear cut lines for what is and isnt acceptable. Unfortunately, like most things that are mean/offensive, there is no clear cut line here. It isnt that binary.
