Clay Travis mentioned he went to a BBQ in the home of an MSU fan, anyone on this board?

Speaking of Clay, who I'm assuming is the second most influential media person in relation to the SEC, do we need to invite him to a game this fall or some other campus event? UM made inroads with Finebaum and he carried Freeze's water almost to the bitter end, we need to do the same with Travis (who has bagged on us in the past).

Jake Mangum listens to Outkick and gave his sons and him some signed balls. Did a ten minute segment on the show about MS State baseball and Jake Mangum. It was great publicity.

I’m taking a stab at this, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the MSU fan in question wasn’t Pat Martin. He is a really successful Nashville restauranter who owns an increasingly expanding BBQ empire.

He is a State fan.

There are a lot of us who live here in his neighborhood. There is no telling who it would be.

I feel like Clay is someone we could bring into the fold with a little work. Especially after the Jake Mangum thing. I know he's a TN fan and went to Vandy, but maybe he needs a cross conference team to support.

Please god no. Don't want my alma mater to provide any sort of legitimacy to that troll. You do realize he's not even a Fox employee, right? He's not even influential enough to warrant a contract from the sports network that bought NASCAR's rights and let UFC's walk.

Why would he want to be a fox employee when he makes a boatload of money by owning his own company?

I will say it everytime I see his name. If you are a Clay Travis fan, watch/listen to Finebaum callers this afternoon to see yourself in 25-30 years. Clay Travis is Paul Finebaum minus 25 years.

We need to get him to Starkville for a big game this year, preferably the Florida game. For those of you that have read Dixieland Delight, you know why. For those that have not, Travis traveled the SEC for an entire football season, planning out his trip so he would visit each SEC campus (pre-expansion to 14 teams) for a game, and then wrote about it. Despite his allegiances to UT, I think he did a good job of relaying his experiences as they were, no matter the venue.

Unfortunately for us, this was done during the 2006 season. As you might expect, his chapter on his trip to Starkville during the third year of the Croom era is depressing has all hell to read and makes Starkville look as bad as national perception would suggest. That may actually be the only time he's ever been in Starkville. So, given his pull and notoriety we need to get him back to help change his perception so he can change the perception held by others. Bulldog Bash followed by the UF game would be a great time to do it.

I read that. I got pretty agitated at his jabs against us (He's pretty sure no one has actually graduated from MSU). He shows up the week we have an 1130 game for a crap team and wonders why tailgating is not up to what he thinks it should be.

I at least felt a little better after I read his description of his trip to Fayetteville at least, but I don't think there was a single pro-MSU statement in that book.

Some of his stuff is very insightful, sometimes funny. He used to do a weekly radio slot on JOX in Bham (maybe he still does; not sure) and always took cheap shots at State and Starkville. I remember him going on and on about the female talent at the game was absolutely atrocious; nothing but barefoot poultry science majors; complete wasteland, blah blah.

I neither love or hate the guy; I think he's the Howard Stern of southern football and is playing to his niche. But I'll be damned before I roll out the red carpet to kiss his ***.

I had no idea about his book. I'm sure some of the stuff was warranted if it was written in 2006. It was embarrassing back then. It's like how we make fun of other baseball parks. I remember having a friend from Auburn come in college, and she was in shock st our stadium. I enjoy some of his stuff, but he harps on the political stuff too much. I agree with what he's saying, but he needs to give it a rest and stick to sports for the most part.

With a small minded attitude like that, I think we just uncovered Larry Templeton's message board ID.

MSU has come a long way in the last 20 years and in especially the last 10 years. Our university has changed and we who go to games often realize that, but there are media members who may not have been to campus in that period. Their image of MSU may be of the Croom error. We have to do work to change that.

Do you think Ole Miss gets their party school, beautiful women/campus/town reputation by being passive? No, they put that narrative out there as much as they can. The cultivate their image, they care for it and nurture it (they certainly don't tear it down). For whatever reason, we too often are our own worst enemy. Start a conversation about restaurants in Starkville and someone will immediately begin hating on Little Dooey's, if Dooey's was in Oxford, it would be as famous as Dreamland.

Inviting Clay Travis, Finebaum or another influential media member to campus and making sure they have a good time would go a long way toward bringing perceptions of our school to what we have today, not where we were 10 years ago.

He is a world class douche bag.

TBone, you just succinctly took the verbose words out of my mouth from a long reply I made late last night & deleted. I thought I was being old fashioned, & drunk with my post.

Pimping your brand, i.e. marketing, with controversy is one thing, doing it so much so that you talk more about that than the subject you're covering, hurts your product.

Bo & Jake seem to aspire to be him.

The irony here is...

No doubt Jake fancies himself a mini Clay Travis, Clay is just regurgitating what Adam Carolla has been saying for 20 years.

Clay found a good space. In today's environment where ESPN has driven sports media to the left, Clay has taken the contrarian angle, he realizes that mot southern sports fans are white conservative men and he caters to them. The stupid stuff ESPN does makes it easy pickings.

Not only was it the 2006 season, it was the Auburn game, a sweltering, 100-degree, 11:30 AM JP kickoff, asswhipping where MSU got beat 34-0. Quite possibly the worst possible MSU home game to attend in 2006.

You were doing well to this point. The real space he occupies belongs not to political leanings, but toward the 50% of the population with an IQ below 100. These folks seem to love Clay Travis, Stephen A. Smith, Jerry Springer, Judge Judy, and The Kardashians.

You're absolutely right. State has come a long way. And as former Athletic Director from the Paleozoic era, tell all the lazy jackass media members to 17ing Google current information about the university or get on a plane and visit. Sheez, you act like Travis is college football royalty. If the guy who got into the business by asking Tebow if he was a virgin is now the end-all-be-all of our perception, and you believe his short-sighted opinions are catastrophic to us, then you both are in the same lazy-river raft.

I'm not offended at all. Unlike you, I can relate and conversate with people that don't think like me without belittling them (something that I disagree with Clay Travis on, by the way). I agree with things he says and I disagree with some things as well. Usually people with IQs above 100 can see a middle ground in most situations. They usually don't call 100 % of any group (outside of actual things like hate groups) stupid.

Sounds like we are arguing about the color of fruit and I am saying red and you are saying orange. In my original post, I lumped Clay in with Stephen A. Smith and Judge Judy in that their "space" is the low IQ crowd. I meant for that to read that as a base.. a bulk... definitely not 100%. Again, smart people watch/listen to these shows, but they are the minority. If you think these people are targeting intellectual average or above audiences, well that's like your opinion man.

Now to be more clear. In my opinion, I think Clay Travis is a troll targeting the easily manipulated. He doesn't believe a lot of the things he says is my bet. If that entertains you, great. But I personally lump him in with Finebaum and other people that are full of ****. I am glad he's not a friend of Mississippi State. It doesn't mean me, you, and Jake Mangum can't be friends... You know, Clay Travis fans and shower farters coexisting in harmony.

Nah bro, you said if you are a Clay Travis fan that you should look at finebaum callers and that’s you in 25 years. I would consider myself a fan of his to an extent. I consider a lot of my friends, who also have IQs above 100 and not Finebaum callers fans of his as well. I’m sure his personality attracts plenty of mouth breathing rednecks who are actually bad people. I would not consider that to be the majority, though. Try not to think like Lit while farting in the shower.

That sounds like Clay Travis. Makes me like you more now! But for real, the guy went on Finebaum and said 85% of the Alabama fan base were complete redneck idiots and called them the dumbest fan base in America. I highly doubt he’s attracting that type of audience. Radical moderate, in his words. Don’t really like the way he presents his views, but the actual view he usually possesses is pretty close to what I think a lot of times. I would imagine that most of his audience is middle to upper middle class educated white guys.

Deal. I will only fart in the shower on Fridays and you listen to him 2 times a week max. We will be better men for it...

Besides, I have swung off the rope swing at Black Creek too. We can't stay mad...

Going back to work, I will try to be more open minded about the audience and just hate on the dickhead from now on.

I'll be the contrarian here, I guess. I like Travis but I recognize he is a self-promoter. A New Orleans ran his show in the mornings and I didn't want to like the guy, but he won me over. He railed against the politicization at ESPN and the racial situation of LaBron's graffiti incident. At the time, I heard no one else discussing these issues. Travis is an admitted Liberal with contributions to Democrat candidates, so he's no Trumpster. The New Orleans station has since dropped the show at 6 am to carry someone named Josh Innes. Now you want to talk a TOOL...

I'm not a snow flake. I don't get my feelings hurt. Definitely not a "P". But I think people who call those who disagree with them snowflakes or, coming from the other side, bigots are the most annoying part of modern society.

If you can't disagree with someone without calling someone a snowflake then chances are you might have hurt feelings.

Like him or hate him (same with Finebaum) he has a huge audience, he is likely the second most listened to media member in the SEC.

We need to be proud of our campus and talk it up and get as much exposure as possible, no better way to that than have people with large audiences talk about our university in a favorable light. No matter if you personally don't like him, there are hundreds of thousands of people who do.

Now that he has had some recent positive interactions with MSU baseball/Mangum, it would a good time to win him over and change his perception. Look at it as using him to further our beloved university.

Why some of our fans don't want to show the world how far we've come in the past 10 years is beyond me.
