Nah never was good
Tried to warn so many people that the dude never made more than 1.5 three point shots per game in his career. He shot at a higher percentage prior to coming here, but he never really shot enough to know how good a shooter he really was.

I think he can be okay with spot minutes as a role player. Problem is Cal wants to start him and play him 25-30mins per game. He’s not good enough for that.

I agree, it amazes me how many shooters have been recruited or transferred here only to be busts under Cal. Sorta makes you wonder is it the player or the Coaching?
It's the player and the pressure. We've had plenty of badass shooters under Coach Cal.
#1. The best of course: Doron Lamb. He only hit like five three pointers in the national championship game...
2. Jamal Murray. He only hit a three in every single game that he played. The only person to ever do it. Also the only person in the history of basketball the score 50 points without a free throw in the NBA.
3. Aaron Harrison I think he won some tournament games with shooting.
4. Malik Monk hit some shots

Not saying we have not had some good shooters under Cal, but, we have had many that were supposed to be good shooters and ended up stinking up the court.

While I think that Cal should put shooters in a better position to thrive, the idea that he "ruined them" is absurd. What hampers those guys are injuries and/or better guys playing in front of them.
-CJ constant injuries
-Kellan Grady was one of the best shooters in the SEC last year until his plantar fasciitis started flaring up
-Jemarl Baker had(has) constantly been injured

He’s just like Toppin and many other basketball players

He can make them in warmups but not with a defender on him

It’s all mental. I was told in my morning league I was the best warmup shooter ever. After about a second, I realized it was not a compliment

That comment helped me shoot in the game now. To be mentally tough, not afraid to miss, or not thinking someone else should be shooting instead of me

Cal doesn’t ruin shooters. Grady, Quickley, Monk, Knight, Murray all great. They are just better than Frederick
Agreed, and there is alot more you can include on that list. Some people want blame Cal for everything no matter what it is. There is plenty of blame to go around on what is happening on the court, but to cherry pick a few players that didn't live up to shooting expectations is unfair in this argument, considering all the good shooters Cal has had over the years.

Fredrick joins a long list of players who came to UK billed as shooters, but never found their stroke:

Josh Carrier, Jon Hood, Dontaie Allen, etc.

That’s not Cal’s fault. He’s a walking Injury with serious confidence issues. Reeves is shooting the best he ever has in his career here at Kentucky.
CJ has zero athleticism as well. He needs to be wide open to shoot. The SEC is too athletic to allow for him to get wide open. He’s just a better fit at Iowa

Like who else?
I can think of more who shot better than expected than the other way around.

Why are you focusing on this year only, what about the 9 and whatever year.

No other way to look at it. Frederick has been a huge disappointment. A “shooter” in a season long slump that is injury prone and a liability on defense.
His defense is better than Reeves’. His shot, not so much.

Cal should only recruit guys who can create their own shot. One time early on the season they ran that screen like Tubby use to run for Sheppard and Frederick easily hit the 3. God forbid we ever did that again.

Yupppp. People acted like he was the next JJ Reddick when in reality he's closer to Josh Carrier.

Mintz shot better here. Askew was never know as a shooter. He also sucked for Texas and whoever else he went to play for. Did Cal coach there too?
Once Cal ruins a player even a good Coach cannot correct his poor coaching.

It’s ******** and you have zero proof to back up what you’re saying. I’m plenty pissed at cal right now and I’m certainly not in the mood to defend his ***. He deserves criticism. But we have to be fair. Don’t just make **** up to support baseless claims.

Let’s not pretend Cal values shooting in recruiting. He just doesn’t

I’m not sure the rules about linking to 247 but Jerry Meyer had a scouting report of Askew that praised him for his 3 Pt shooting. He wasn’t the only one but when I googled “Askew high school scouting report” it was the first result.

I do think Cal’s bigger problem is not recruiting players well suited for the modern game. But several players he’s had have shot better before coming here and shot better after leaving here (either through the portal or otherwise). And when I say they shoot better after leaving I’m mostly referring to transfers.
