11.6 Mil is a lot but so is 8 years. Doesn't seem like such a record beater given the number of years.

I don’t think Indiana had any other choice but to lock in Cignetti to a long-term contract with the high interest in his recent success. The irony is the Penn State was in the same spot with Franklin and extended his contract only to see their season suddenly fall apart. Let’s see if the rise in the Hoosier football program is sustainable. I think of NU’s rise under GB with a couple of great years only to fall back to earth. I also see how solid programs like Wisconsin, Michigan and PSU are suddenly struggling to win even with all of the money being spent. Seems like Franklin will have lots of offers to coach somewhere. I guess his buyout with PSU has incentives to accept a position sooner rather than later.

Nice to have Mark Cuban money.

This is a LITTLE less significant than it seems. He is already in year one of a $8/year deal, this just adds one extra year and $3.6 million on top per year. Certainly not nothing, but it's not like he was on a 4 for $7 and just got $100 million.

It is less what you spend as it is how you spend it.

And Wis hasn't really spent

Maybe but it still makes it a lot harder for someone like PSU to try to poach him. Depending on the terms, may be conditions where they would have to pay the school as well

It's always funny to me when this is the reaction to "Coach of major program fired...program owes him eight figure payout."

...as opposed to, "hey, maybe we shouldn't offer guaranteed contracts worth eight figures."

Maybe 2% of fans worry about coaches buyouts.

Academic research suggests they probably shouldn't. On average, coaching changes at poor to middling programs produce no improvement. They are more likely to in programs that already perform pretty well.

IU gives massive $$ and contract extension while on same day shutting down the print edition of student newspaper for including news.
Cignetti seems Knight-like to me and we all know how those rednecks down there like that.
