I thought American Sniper was an entertaining read, although I wouldn't call it well-written or necessarily a "good" book, if that makes sense. It's easy reading, a good book for the beach or an airplane. I enjoyed the parts about the SEAL training and what the war was like moreso than the kill-count bravado and stories of how much of a bad *** he is, then in the next breath telling us he doesn't consider himself a bad ***.

I got interested in Kyle's post-war story after reading the book. I won't spoil it because I don't know if the movie gets into it, but read about the Jesse Ventura lawsuit and some of the claims Kyle made after the war if you want to know more about him. His story doesn't have a very happy ending.

If you enjoyed reaind about

SEAL training (BUD/S, etc.) then you'd like Dick Couch's two books, The Warrior Elite: The Forging of SEAL Class 228 and The Finishing School: Earning the Navy SEAL Trident. Dick was a SEAL so he was given an all-access pass to document the path one takes to become one of the hardest mother 17ers on the planet. Both are interesting.

He's also done some similar books on MARSOC, Green Berets, and Rangers.

Those of you on a history kick....DDAY by Stephen Ambrose is one of the best

Right now I'm a few hundred pages into The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer. It's a mammoth 1250 pages and insanely detailed, considered the gold standard among books on the subject. The background info on Hitler alone is worth the read.

Yeah they are not as good, but the storylines themselves still carry the books along.

"Waiting for Zoe", by James Ament, a retired executive friend who just published his first novel; "Traveler" (self - help); "German Boy" about a WWII refugee, and "Coming to America", the sequel to German Boy. At the ripe age of 72 I try to read at least a book a week.

I read Unholy Night by Seth Grahame-Smith earlier this year.

Also, I just started Southern Bastards (It's a comic series) and it's pretty good.
