Wow. He was the hot commodity a few years ago.
There were lots of "hot commodities" who've been floated as possibilities for NU over the years and about the only one I think who has done much is Malzahn. Strong and probably a dozen or so others who haven't really done squat since then have been mentioned. The one guy who might have worked is the Dolphins current head coach. The Vikings' Zimmerer was contacted before we hired Callahan but as a rule the hot names have a high probability of not working out. Peterson was a proven commodity and he's done a good job at Washington.

I don't think he would have dealt well with the pressure at NU. Good guy and IMO a great head coach. Our fan base was spoiled by T.O.

Probably took a look at the landscape where it would take him too long to ever field a team that could compete with the top 6 and said “not worth it”
Coupled with the paying of athletes which will all but destroy this sport

I think he made a good move. He just realized that trying to make Washington into Clemson was a pipe dream and the best he could do is win the PAC

Solid move. Transferred to an administrative role with no buyout for his contract when USC hires him next year for 5 million a year.

"He delivered unprecedented results, and he did so without compromising his core beliefs.

“Doing this job that I do and getting to see shortcuts that others take and the amount of rampant cheating in college football … to have a guy that I have full confidence that doesn’t play in that gray area and really is willing to live in the black and white, even if it’s costly to some of the recruiting battles, it’s very, very commendable and something worthy to be very, very proud of,” said FOX analyst and former UW quarterback Brock Huard. “But I do think that eventually — and I don’t mind this being on the record — that takes a toll. If that’s the direction (college football) is going over the long term, I just don’t think he was willing and wanting to play that game.”

I remember at that time there was smoke around Petersen interested in Nebraska but Our AD wanting Nutt - something about him having a special needs kid and that’s why he didn’t want to leave Boise?

Petersen's son had a medical problem (brain cancer) which is why Petersen originally refused to leave Boise. Once the cancer was successfully treated Petersen went to U Dub.

"Petersen said he came to realize his passion was waning after last year's Rose Bowl. Petersen said he didn't appreciate the grandeur and history of playing in the Rose Bowl and was too caught up in the stress of the matchup with Ohio State.

"You worked your whole life to get there. And I didn't really appreciate the week, I didn't appreciate the game like I need to as a kid growing up looking at that game," he said. "And I think that was one of the things that really hit me loud and clear, and you start to pay attention to that."

Coaching is a destructive pursuit...especially for those whot actually do it well. It is an 80 hour a week job...you can't have a family, you are constantly affected by the whims of 17-22 year old males who are themselves idiots, who have millions of idiot followers, and idiot handlers in their ears. Every kid is going to be a millionaire, if you don't start them they transfer, if they suck and don't work they sit and take up space for 4 years...and every year you have to pander to progressively younger kids whose priorities are followers and shoes. The only thing you have room to care about is a scoreboard, win by 1 and everything is o.k, lose by 1 and the sky is falling. And all the while local pundits discuss how your best could be better..and the only solace is you are given more money than you could ever spend, especially considering you don't know your wife, or kids, or your wife's new boyfriend.
