That Van De Velde choke was a bad one although the final hole and conditions at the open are tough. He should have dropped out of the water for sure though.
This would have been a great thread in which to misspell the second word in the title as "pole".
I was at 2 of the 3. Last night and the Weber time out.
I think we have to consider what was at stake in each instance. Louisville choked away one regular-season game. Granted, it was against the then-No. 1 team in the country . . . but it was one regular-season game.
By contrast, Webber's mistake was with 11 seconds left in the NCAA Championship game.
Similarly, Van de Velde's choke was on the last hole of the 1999 British Open - certainly one of the two or three most prestigious golf tournaments in the world.
We could have a reasonable conversation about the Webber mistake vs. Van de Velde's choke . . . but the Louisville choke against U.Va. last night isn't even close to being in the same category.
Just MHO, of course.

I thought he played out of the creek maybe he just stood there for awhile and checked it out. I remember him playing about 4 shots out of the fescue.
I think you are right about him thinking about hitting out of the water. But the ball was several inches below the surface and close to the bank so back to the fescue he went.
The place he landed was like 16 feet below the fairway too he would have had to flop it out and advance maybe 10 yards.
Atlanta falcons two years ago was a major choke job.
