Yeah. The Chief is one of the folks who’ve gotten the virus. I had commented that several days ago in an earlier thread about the possibility of Choctaw casinos opening early.

I was wrong thinking they might beat the miss casinos, but it got bad fast there.

There’s also going to be mobile covid testing at the Choctaw reservation in Jones County on Thursday.

I played the Oaks a week ago with 2 other guys and I think we were the only ones on the course. Didn't see anyone other than when we checked in.

Yep. More than half of neshoba county's 429 are Choctaw Indians

I thought the Choctaws were sort of a closed society. How'd they get infected so badly - staff interaction with casino players, then taking it home?

I've always been perplexed how the term Indian persisted for so long, up until the present day. At this point though my understanding is that is by and large the preferred nomenclature by the people themselves.

Not at all a closed society. Most live on the reservation but they all shop at Walmart and Lowes and everywhere all the other people are. No grocery stores on the Rez in Neshoba county. Plus they are a population that has serious comorbidity issues. Diabetes is very prevalent along with many other health issues.

It's not derogatory, and they seem to like it just fine, so why not use it. As a kid, when playing cowboys and Indians, everybody wanted to be an Indian - it was a symbol of bravery and toughness I suppose.

Now the Washington Redskins is derogatory to most Indians, I would think.

I'm not saying its derogatory, it does seem to be preferred as well. It's just seemed bizarre to me as a kid and still now that we call people indians who arent from india. None of those people had ever seen india in 1492, I cant imagine they even knew of its existence. I always felt like at some point a simple correction would have been made.

I don't have a scientific publication to back this, its just an opinion and observation from someone that has worked with them a lot on the reservation. The Choctaws as a whole are not a healthy group. Obesity from appearances looks to be much higher than the general population, diabetes is high, diets are terrible, alcoholism is high, see where I'm going w/ this? Not a racist post at all, just an observation made over the last 20 years or so of doing business w/ them.

The Chief declared a 30-Day State of Public Health Emergency for the Tribe earlier this evening.

I’m no lawyer or health official so I don’t feel all that comfortable answering that question. These were posted on the Tribe’s Facebook Page if you’d like to read the Declaration (edit to add— I’d have to guess that what’s different is that paragraph that begins at the bottom of the first page that goes into penalties for noncompliance is one of the two major things here— the other is obviously the 30 day duration):
