The issue I had last year was the defenses uncanny ability to give up first downs on 3rd and 4th and long. In fact there was 4 games where we gave up 3rd or 4th and over ten yards that if the defense stopped them we won the game - 8-4 would have been a great year and that was possible with just being average on those downs. I think they will get that fixed this year

Oh, I hear ya. It was brutal watching us give up endless 3rd & longs the whole damn year. It may not be fully fixed this year but I sure hope that problem won't be quite so bad.

Um no. Pelini may have known alot about defense but he couldn't effectively teach it to his players. Our defense was a hot mess when he didn't have NFL talent to clean up all the mistakes.

Hmmm, funny how with Clownahan's superb "NFL talent" NU simply couldn't stop anybody. Period.

I'm still not sold on Chins, hope to be this year. Last year seemed like more than just being out-manned, more like out-coached on D. The 3rd and 4th and longs were absolutely crazy.

Produce the best defense in college football in 30 years before we say he is a better D coordinator than Bo.

I don't care who was playing Suh wasnt smothering WRs.

He had the time to wreck havoc....lie to yourselves all you want.

Bo Pelini was probably the best of that bunch, although he wasn’t a good head coach. I think the jury is still out on Chinander. Hopefully he’ll turn out to be the best.
Nope little Blophenii and his mary men If everyone is ok with labels, played like Mary Poppins against the run. Melvin Gordon scores again. I believe every Big ten back with a pulse looked like Walter Payton against those horrid run Defenses. Hopefully the days of being owned by Troy and Northern Illinois OLines is over. And by the way, we were pretty awful against the pass under Bo too. Teams just choice to run become they needed to prepare for the grind of the Big ten.

If you watch the defensive calls on third or fourth downs and long and know anything about defense you know that problem was all coaching!

Chin gave a pretty good overview of the D in terms of players and the different position groups. Looking to be able to always play a good three on the DL, so guys like Carlos and maybe the elder Daniels will have to play both DE and NT. So there could be lots of different combos up front. Davis twins plus Darrion, Daniels brothers and Stille, etc. It seems Jojo will swing between being at OLB against spread teams and a big safety against run heavy B1G teams.
Good chat with Chin.

Jojo gonna lay the smackdown next year. I wonder if his his parents were listening to Johnny Cash alot when they named him.

Then let’s hope that just as the kids have improved over the last year that Chin also has improved over the last year.

Yeah you are definitely going for it there. I think he’s just a guy. Do you really believe Bohl wouldn’t come in and get better results as a DC? Hope you are right my man!
Bohl wet the bed when he had the job. He was too busy getting drunk and banging women other than his wife. Chinander may be "just a guy" but coaching college defense isn't rocket science. He's smart enough but better yet he can teach. Our D last year made giant strides and improved during the year. We don't have to have the greatest defensive mind. We have to have a guy who knows enough but most importantly can get his guys to be in the right place and do their job. Pelini failed miserably at that unless he had guys with enough talent to cover up mistakes. I'm very optimistic about an improved defense with the players having some continuity of coaching. I do NOT expect us to be able to dominate like we did under Osborne or at times like we did with Suh wreaking havoc.

Boy since TO left we’ve had a lot of coaches commit infidelity..

Did you sleep through 2009? That was ALL thanks to Callahan 'crootin.

Geeshh.....once again, if Clownahan had such excellent recruiting for four years why was he losing all over the place?

Two losing seasons in four years. Does that give you a hint? He did rack up some good offensive stats during garbage time.....but that was about it.

He had a terrible defensive staff with maybe the worst defensive back coach (Elmo) in all of college football. The first losing season was due to a complete offensive makeover without the QB and offensive line to run his offense AND a bad defensive staff. Make no mistake, Callahan brought in a ton of talent. The proof is in how many of those guys played in the NFL. A fair number were also high draft picks.
