MYTHICAL DUAL MEET

Greatest Iowa Hawkeyes Wrestling Team

vs

Greatest Penn State Nittany Lions Wrestling Team

All-Time Dream Matchup Analysis

Introduction

Iowa’s all-time mythical lineup edges a razor-close dual over Penn State’s, something like 19-16 or 20-15, in a war of legends. Both programs are the two greatest in modern NCAA history — Iowa with 24 team titles and the Gable/Brands dynasty; Penn State with the Sanderson-era run of 11+ titles since 2011 and record-setting scoring margins. This is pure fantasy — different eras, styles, and weight systems — but grounded in individual resumes (NCAA titles, Hodge Trophies, Olympic/World results, and dominance metrics).

Projected All-Time Lineups

Mythical Dual Breakdown

These are reasoned projections based on titles, peak dominance, international success, and style matchups — not guarantees. Iowa takes more of the lighter and heavyweight anchors with pure historical greatness and Olympic pedigree. Penn State owns the middle-to-upper weights with modern volume of multi-time champions (especially Starocci’s unprecedented five titles and Brooks’ four).

Projected Team Score

IOWA 19–16 (or 20–15) PENN STATE

Bonus points decide it — Iowa’s classic pressure versus Penn State’s pace and finishing ability. A couple of toss-ups swinging the other way flips the dual. Real dual history favors Iowa overall (series lead), but the Sanderson era flipped momentum. In a pure mythical “best vs. best,” it’s a classic toss-up that comes down to a couple of swing matches and bonus.

Why These Teams?

Iowa’s Case for Greatest Ever

Nine straight NCAA titles (1978–86), the 1997 squad’s then-record 170 points + five champions, Gable’s .940 dual winning percentage, and unmatched depth of three-timers + Olympians. The all-time lineup is loaded with multiple Olympic golds. Iowa has 24 national team championships — the most in the modern era after Oklahoma State’s historical total.

Penn State’s Case

Sanderson-era absolute modern dominance (most individual titles since 2011, multiple 100+ point NCAA margins, the 2023–24 team’s record 172.5 points and 100-point win over the runner-up). Starocci (5×) and Brooks (4×) are generational. Recent duals have favored PSU heavily against Iowa. The Nittany Lions have produced a dynasty that many argue produced the single greatest college wrestling team of all time.

Final Verdict

Both rooms would produce multiple All-Americans and champions in any era. This mythical dual is a celebration of the two programs that have defined college wrestling for the last half-century. Iowa’s historical depth and Olympic pedigree give them a slight edge in this projection, but Penn State’s modern multi-time champions make every weight a war. In the end, the real winners are the fans of the greatest rivalry in the sport.

Great write up. It's the same debate as best NFL or NBA team ever across decades. I like you picks I wouldn't go w anything different as far as wrestlers. Maybe different outcomes. But THATS WHY WE WRESTLE THE MATCHES. Anything can happen.

Lilly not done yet but could be best for PSU at 25 but his folk isn't as good as his free. Lee wins but doubt bonus against Lilly. I don't think Star majors or techs any top wrestlers but does always win. Great thread Sunshine.

McGuiness would be a bad matchup for Nick Lee. Nick Lee had a motor but seemed to open himself up in every match and would get a little sloppy. At such a high pace, he got away with it almost all the time. McGuiness was very good at taking advantage of guys who could get sloppy; he really didn't get tired unless he was cutting a ton. If McGuiness doesn't redshirt and wrestles his optimal weight all 4 years, he could have been a 4-timer. Should coulda would, but it isn't a stretch at all to say he was that type of talent.

I get a kick out of people when they slot guys into weight classes based on the number and how close it was to their competition weight when they wrestled… without taking into consideration the fact that they weighed in sometimes the day before or the morning before night competition. The only time they weighed in the morning of competitions, they would have 5-6 hours to recover.

125 - Spencer Lee

133 - There is no way Tom Brands weighs in at 133 with a 1-2 hour recovery. 133 could be Terry Brands, but Barry Davis would be the better choice based on college results.

141 - Tom Brands could be here, and would be a solid choice, but for a terrible elbow injury Randy Lewis would have had a better college career. Hard to think Ironside isn’t even an option.

149 - No way Lincoln makes 149 with the new weigh in rules. He only made it (142 when he had all day to recover) TJ Williams could make 149 if it was a one off, at least he wrestled the weight. He was SO good!

157 - Lincoln MacIlravy all day. Jimmy couldn’t get down that far, he was a full sized 158 “again” with morning of or day before weigh ins (Massive difference)

165 - Jimmy Z all day

174 - Joe Williams at his senior year weight.

184 - Chris Campbell at his senior year weight.

190 - Ed Banach at his senior year weight.

Hwt - Lou Banach

What a great dual, great thread. I too would take Williams, Zalesky, and Campbell. I believe Gable has been on record that Campbell was the best or most athletic wrestler he ever coached.

Had to look it up. Gable said he was the most talented he'd ever coached. Also learned Campbell only started wrestling as a Senior in HS where he won the state title and went undefeated.
