Just saw the sad news regarding Chet Coppock. I had some brief interactions with him back in the day. He was a good guy who always had a soft spot for the Cats. He was a big fan of Coach Barnett. Chet will be missed. RIP.

I think he once wrestled a Bear. I know he rubbed some the wrong way with his bombastic style, but I always liked his willingness to have an opinion even if it wasn’t always a popular take. A Chicago legend. RIP Chester.

Oh no! When I traveled in Chicago media circles, he was always known as a good guy who enjoyed playing his character.

Favorite memory of Chet from his radio show:

Starts the broadcast introducing his guest, Barry Sanders. If you ever listened to Chet, you understood that his windups to the actual question lasted a couple of minutes. So he introduces Barry, goes through his career in detail, the records, the honors, and on and on. Finally, he says hello to Barry.

The response: "Thanks for having me on. But I want to make one thing clear.

"I'm Byron, not Barry."

Sad news. I was shocked to read he was only 70. I thought he was older because it feels like has been around forever.

Didn’t SNL run a spoof of him many years ago, when Second City alums dominated the show? I remember a skit from some show on “Chet Chit-Chat” from a while back.

Great Chicago broadcaster, and sad to read this news.

Great Chicago broadcaster, and sad to read this news.

"Chet Chit-Chat" was parody by Bruce Wolf, not SNL

I remember listening to Chet Coppock's radio show as a kid back in the '80s.

Three things stood out: he gave equal time to Chicago area teams like the White Sox otherwise ignored by the Tribune and others; his old-money accented commentary about the Ditka era Bears was "simply delicious, baby"; and that interesting and oft played voice promo from wrestler Randy Savage touting his show never grew old.

RIP.

I first met Chet in 1972 when he was just starting his career in Indianapolis. He came to my HS and interviewed a couple of us knuckleheads. He made a point to stay in touch while I was at NU and through the years since...truly a class act.

So weird. About an hour ago I thought about him for the first time in years. Then I come here and read the news.
