How things ended up on Thursday and where things were even as late as Wednesday morning were very different. Nebraska decided to show more interest, but only because Brown kind of pushed the issue. Nebraska's financial package is not going to be the most lucrative.

IF Brown decides to go to Lincoln, he will be betting on himself and future NIL earnings, especially local NIL stuff that he wouldn't get in Miami, Manhattan or Berkeley.

I am telling you though that Nebraska did not really have a lot of interest in Brown until later on Wednesday. Perhaps it was the lure of playing close to family and not chasing the bag and his persistence in making the trip to Lincoln to watch practice that swayed their change of direction.

But I stand by what I was told initially about Nebraska's interest and them not really having a visit set up for him, like they have for other transfer recruits, especially early in the week when I posted what I did. about it not being set in stone and it being only to watch practice.

For the record, there are other sites that had similar information that put their stories up late yesterday.

Is this one of those in-state scenarios that can play out well for both parties? Everyone that has watched tape on him says he can break tackles, but is the athleticism there to play in the BIG? Would think so if Miami is offering. I haven't watched tape on him as of yet. Holgorsen hasn't pulled punches about the RB room. I would think that he would of had to sign off on it as the OC, or did Rhule defer to Barthel on this?

Didn’t read all of this lengthy thread so sorry if already mentioned, but apparently he played 16 games and had zero fumbles. That is surely of interest to any coach considering him.

Sounds like someone had a theory that NU was not interested and ran with it and a lot of people believed it. All the while behind the scenes it was just not true and actual recruiting was happening

I don’t think anything changed. He had a scheduled visit. People claiming NU has no interest and it was just to watch a practice. I don’t buy any of that. I think NU was/is actively recruiting him. Ej, Barthol, Ekeler, and Rhule were all involved. Whether if he wants to start then it will be up to him to go somewhere else. But I fully believe NU wants him for depth

From what I am told, Brown wanted to come to Lincoln Thursday and watch practice before he went to Berkeley. There were conversations Wednesday that changed the visit from just practice to a more of a regular visit. Brown was persistent to the point that it happened.

I know that, even on this forum, it was discussed that the staff was content with what they had at running back, even though the message boards and the fans didn't necessarily share that opinion. I do know that Nebraska was not going to just outbid Miami, Kansas St or Cal for Brown's services because they were content with the room as is. Again, something changed Wednesday to get Nebraska to increase their interest.

Take it or leave it. That is my understanding of the events.

Exactly. Nebraska was interested the moment they heard he was available. The only question was if they wanted to spend the money to get him.

From what I gathered from Bennings podcast, it wasn't intended to be an all day event but turned into it. If he had a flight to catch to cal that night he spaced it off

Wait, what? We're outspending Ohio State by almost $5.5M? And we still have that big of a talent disparity? Yikes, if true.

Only conclusions to draw are...

1. We've got way too many eggs in one, or a handful of small baskets. Meaning we're paying one or a handful of guys way too much with not enough left for other positions. Dylan?
2. Our talent evaluation sucks. I thought that was supposed to be one of Rhule's big strengths. Finding diamonds in the rough and all that.
3. We're having to overpay just to get players to NU. That might be a harsh reality until we're back to being relevant again, I guess.

1st - I don’t think this is NIL money. It’s money spent by the athletic department on football.

2nd - We just completed a huge multi-million dollar construction and renovation project. So those numbers may be a bit of a one year anomaly.

Lastly… if we are out spending the rest of the B1G in NIL dollars, to this degree, I would be more concerned about our lack of recruiting prowess. But it’s athletic department spending and we are going into year 3 of a new coaching regime. Now, this season, is when we should start seeing a tangible return on such spending.

We go 7-5 or worse in Rhule’s 3rd season (very possible) and I’m right with you. I’ll be the 1st to say aren’t spending our money wisely and something needs to change. I just can’t go there until I see how this season plays out. JMO

How does that not jive with what my guy told me? Nebraska wasn't going to be the highest offer, he was going only for practice, if he went at all, and then head out to Berkeley. Something changed on Wednesday to where it was going to be more of a regular visit based on, what I am told, Brown pushing for more of a regular visit and potentially taking less money because the local NIL could be lucrative. Definitely more lucrative than he cold get at the other 3 options. Maybe I could have worded the interest level differently, but the point is they were good if he came on the visit and they were good if he didn't based on the fact they weren't going to chase him. Nebraska's interest was based on him coming here for less money than he was going to get elsewhere. Is that really interest or is it I'll fit you in if that is what you really want?

If you have any value in what Benning had to say, he was there for at least part of the meet. I’m sure NU has some type of package for him past cost of attendance. But it seemed much more on the hard sell of being at home with a program that prizes hard nosed play. Bringing him for a practice day emphasized that. It’s possible the communication between the parties wasn’t so hot early on. Benning is a bit of a cheerleader, but he is of the opinion that NU isn’t going to vary much in their approach to the portal and won’t chase players. NU for sure put on the hard sell at the end. Cal still offers more potential carries for the kid.

Yeah, fair points. If it's just money spent and not NIL money spent, that makes sense. But, as has been pointed out, the lack of teams like Oregon and USC on that list makes the whole thing pretty suspect regardless.

Can’t speak to validity of these numbers. I’m sure Oregon would be on the list (towards the top) if this was NIL expenditures. But then again kids aren’t required to disclose NIL deals, it’s voluntary, so a list of NIL expenditures might not be the most accurate.

He was referring to Nebraska's overall attitude toward the portal. He was saying that the Huskers "weren't going to chase" anyone in the portal. Whether it's an immediate need or passing interest.
He specifically said, "...they didn't do it with Rocco, they didn't do it with Pritchett...they're quietly confident that their culture will sustain itself..."
You're saying, "they were good if he came on the visit and they were good if he didn't based on the fact they weren't going to chase him." Based on what Benning said, that could be applied to anyone they have interest in.
So the idea that Brown "pushed for it", and somehow this changed NU's coaching staff's minds toward him, is ridiculous.
I will agree that money played a role, but that is a matter of need, evaluation, and overall value. Just as it was for all the other transfers.

Possibly. Sawchuk's 977 yd's were over 2 full seasons and a few games his redshirt year.
In 2024 he had 39 carries and 128 yards. He's leaving because he won't start at OU.
Brown's 1181 yd's were achieved in one year.
Sawchuk was ranked higher coming out of high school, and he's played against better competition. But I think, at this point, Brown has more potential moving forward.
