Most of you remember him? Everyone thinks he was a defensive genius. Yeah that’s because is last 10 years he had great talent. I remember in the early 80’s to 1991 most fans wanted him run out on a rail. He couldn’t coach he couldn’t make adjustments. Aw then all of a sudden he starts getting talent and looks like Buddy Ryan. Imo Coach Frost still has players not buying into his system. I see way to much Laziness , no fire. Players undisciplined. I also see we have no depth to challenge the starters in most positions , they are mentally fragile, once something bad starts it just snowballs. Think you need to recruit players with a edge, cockiness, kids from a winning program. But fans saying frost needs to be fired. Who you going to get? Sabin isn’t coming neither is urban or dabo. Hell Riley got 3 years. I’m seeing a lot more out of frost in a year and a half than we ever go out of Riley. You want to look at the down fall look at Bo after 4 years. Once Callahans players were gone bo started to slide he definitely couldn’t recruit except for a few. It didn’t help when he started looking at different jobs, what does that tell a recruit. Nebraska’s last 4 coaches two of them frank and bo couldn’t get another power 5 job. Callahan is a career nfl assistant and Riley is a career 500 coach. Let that soak it. Now you understand the mess we’re in!!!

Ummmm....no. It’s because he changed defensive schemes and went from a 5-2 to a 4-3 and the defense literally got better overnight. They went from being 49th in total defense in 1991 to 24th in total defense in 1992 after the switch. They then improved each year from there as they learned the scheme better and got players to suit that defense better.

Yeah and the reason they changed was because the old scheme couldn’t keep up with the speed of the southern schools. But until that Charlie’s defense struggled in big games

Even with the 5-2 Charlie McBride almost always had very good defenses. That Nebraska fans were complaining about how bad our defense was then is a lot like Alabama fans saying how bad their defense is now.

And literally no one complained about the lack of fundamentals on any TO team.

I wouldn’t go that far I’d say he had just good defense. He was competitive, but he took his share of complaints. But my point is until they changed schemes and got better players he struggled in big games. I believe we lost 7 bowl games in a row

You left out that they changed the type of players they recruited going after more speed. Frost has already started that process but it is going to take time.

And they recruited safeties and converted them to linebackers—thus adding speed and dynamic playmakers. Good post, sir.

Some choose to forget as well that there might have been some help from "supplements" to build some of those players. This is a COMPLETE rebuild on both sides of the ball .

This is true. When we first switched to the 4-3, thanks to Bobby Bowden, we sucked and that's when Coach McBride was the villianized by fans. That was because we didn't have the personel to run that defense. It got better once we got the guys here.

It made a difference when we actually started recruiting guys who showed they were great on the defensive side of the ball, as opposed to recruiting a bunch of running backs and then converting those who were not going to make it on the offensive side.

Right now our linebackers and our safety injuries are killing us. Nelson is physically the only B1G OLB we have available right now. That isn't Frost's or Chinander's fault. Our deficiencies lay directly at the feet of Bray,Diaco, Banker and Riley. We HAVE to get bigger at linebacker to run the 3-4. The freshman Nelson weighs around 260. He is going to be a beast. By the time the freshmen Hinrichs and Snodgrass play next year, they'll be over 250. We can NOT judge Chinander fairly until he's had time to recruit and develop what he needs to run his defense.

I think all 7 of those teams finished the season ranked either #1 or #2. Any defense is going to look bad playing against those teams. He got complaints because our fans are dumbasses and can't tell the difference between a borderline 6 win team and a team that was consistently ranked in the top 10 playing national championship caliber teams in bowl games every year.

While normally I think you are the voice of reason, I think there are two things I disagree with here. First, you can judge some things on defense. Regardless of the scheme we are running, fundamentals are not sound across much of the defense. That is down to the coaching, not talent. Run fits, pursuit, setting the edge, basic things are not being done. It isn't getting better, if anything, it is getting worse.

Second, the scheme itself is a problem. I agree that Chin will need time to get his players in, but I don't think you will see a change in the aspect of this defense that has players hitting runners up high, holding them up and trying to strip the ball while they move the pile 20 yards down the field. This is also why people wanting a 4-3 will be disappointed, it won't change a thing in how this D is run. It isn't the formation that is a problem, it is the philosophy.

IF you want to see the future of Chinander's defense and how he wants and we need them to play, watch Nelson. There's no holding guys up. He's our only linebacker physical enough to play in the B1G. That has to change. Our linebacker play is BY FAR the number one problem for Chinander.

Totally agree. Can’t run a 3-4 effectively without good LBs. We’ve been abused at the 2nd level almost all year. It’s on video, and coaches aren’t stupid. The problems are obvious on tv. I’d imagine they are glaring on HUDL. It’s obvious Fleck and staff saw it.

A family member was at a wedding and wanted text updates. FIRST drive I texted him "They're attacking our linebackers. This isn't going to end well".

I’ve been pretty negative about most coaches the last 20 yr but I’m pretty sure if anyone can win here it’s Frost. Grew up here and has seen it, internally, first hand. It will take a while and a couple more years to finish rooting out the remaining termites.

Now I am in the camp that Riley wasn’t right here...but a year and a half in he had a team flirting w/top 10, still ranked when they went to Iowa City on Black Friday

Whether we want to admit it or not, Barney left him some reasonably good O linemen who played hard. He also had a senior mobile QB in Tommy Armstrong who played his *** off and could make up for some his O line deficiencies.
