Are you trying to be a pain in the *** about this? Did you read what was posted? A player has 5 years to play four. A junior would transfer and sit a year before his fourth year of competition...
Sure. Players who were ranked as 4-star/3-star (maybe even unranked) often develop into top college players as Juniors and Seniors.
This is Matthews 3rd year of practicing at a major D1 school, of course he has improved, and may be as good as or possibly better than a FR or Soph version of Briscoe. That doesn't mean last year he would have been better than Briscoe, nor does it mean this year he is better than Briscoe is right now. Maybe he is or would have been, or maybe not, there is no way to know!
Briscoe last year also had some good shooting games (8-11, 7-9 overall, and from 3, 3-3, 2-2, 2-2). It's early. Sample sizes are small at this point, a couple good games can skew a guys stats. Matthews is 37.5% from 3 (9-24). Ok, in early January last year Briscoe was shooting 42% from 3 (9-22). Briscoe was not a good 3-pt shooter, showing that it's too early to say Matthews is a good or better 3pt shooter. In 370 minutes as a FR, Matthews attempted only 4 3's out of 52 shot attempts. So clearly he had no confidence in his own 3pt shot then.

I submit if he had stayed at Uk he would still get minimum playing time and get yanked after any mistake. Cal favors his 5 stars over everyone else. It is what he does.
While this is absolutely right.........there is a portion of the posters here who like to lust over players that transferred, are out with injury, and next year's recruits. The what if we had (fill in the blank) to help.....last year it was Diallo. Before him it was Wiltjer. Right now it is Matthews who transferred and Vanderbilt who is out injured. I hate to see when Vanderbilt comes back. Some have already put the savior yoke around his neck.....it isn't really fair.
I watched the game last night Charles Matthews is still Charles Matthews. He'll have some good games on a bad Michigan team but he wouldn't be getting major minutes at Kentucky, especially after Vanderbilt gets back.
I can't agree with any of this. With all due respect, your post appears to me to be a false narrative to fit an agenda. If this is what you believe, fine - but your belief doesn't make it true.
Once a player leaves UK, whether it is transfer or NBA, I lose interest in them. While I wish them all well, but I do not follow them or long for them back.
I just know what I see, name me one player less than a 5 star ranked player that got PT over a 5 star. Name me one less than 5 star ranked player that gets half as much free reign as do the 5 stars. This is not an a agenda, this is what I see. Not saying I disagree with how Cal does it, I am just stating what I see as a fact. All this means that I doubt Mathews would see any more PT this year than he did 2 years ago, do you agree, or disagree? If you disagree, then what 5 star freshman would sit behind him?
Who should have gotten more playing time that didn’t? It’s always ended up being the right decision so I don’t know why people continue to bring this up.
I think Mathews would absolutely see more PT this year if he deserved it. But, knowing whether or not he deserved it, would likely require more information than we would be privy to.
Also, I may have misunderstood what you were saying; because I thought you were saying that Calipari will play an undeserving 5-star freshmen over a better, more productive upperclassman. I don’t think that’s factual – or even a well-reasoned opinion. That’s what I meant by an agenda, meaning a statement to fit the narrative: “Cal just cares about getting 5-star freshmen to the league, not building the best team.” If this isn’t you, I apologize for jumping to conclusions.
You do not lose a year. Sitting out a season merely delays your remaining years of eligibility, it does not subtract from them.
Let's assume Matthews is a player who will not leave school early. If he stayed at U.K., he would've ended up playing a total of four seasons at U.K.
Instead he played one at U.K. and will play three seasons at Michigan. So either way, he still ends up playing four seasons of college basketball.
You do not lose a year of eligibility simply from transferring. This isn't that hard of a concept.
You were right the first time.
He's an ******* with an agenda. He hates Cal, but he knows how stupid it would be to come out and say something like "I wish he would leave". So he just snipes, endlessly.
This isn’t even a fair comparison.
Cal recruits almost exclusively players who are 5 star players. Let’s look at non-five star players from each class:
’09 – Jon Hood, Darnell Dodson
’10 – Eloy Vargas
’11 – Stacey Poole
’12 – Julius Mays, Willie Cauley-Stein
’13 – Dom Hawkins, Derek Willis
’14 – none
’15 – Charles Matthews
’16 – none
’17 – Shai Alexander
Of those 10 total non-five star players, half were rotation players their first year, and 7 ended up being rotation players at some point in their Kentucky careers.
I’m not sure what point you’re trying to prove, given that the sample size for non-five star guys is so small, and most of them end up playing at some point (5 actually ended up starting at some point).
