Would they move Clemson ahead of both SMU and Miami in the rankings with a win?

Can't really say you "value conference championships" and then rank the actual conference champion below two other teams in the same conference.

Dream scenario:
Clemson barely beats SMU.
AU or ISU win in close game.
Boise State beats UNLV.

#17 Clemson stays ranked behind #15 AU/#16 ISU winner and ACC Champion gets left out as 6th highest ranked champion.

AU/ISU winner stay ranked behind Miami.
SMU presumably drops out and Miami moves up to #11 - putting them in the CFP as the 12-seed.

So the ACC Champ gets left out while a non-champ game Miami gets put in!

Then I get to put this quote up again and again and again:
"As we have said, we have high regard for those who are playing in those conference championships."

I think SMU still gets in and Miami out

Unless they ranked Clemson ahead of SMU, they aren't getting a higher seed.

Clemson would need to be ranked 10th or 11th and SMU 11th or 12th.

They can both make it and SMU ranked and seeded higher.

Edit: I totally screwed this up. Clemson would still make the CFP as the 5th ranked Conference Champ.
However, they could still be ranked and seeded below fellow ACC teams.

That can’t happen as far as I understand. Only the top 4 conference champions get byes, but the ACC champ would still get in under your scenario.

I doubt SMU would drop behind Miami as a close championship game loser either, as they have said conference championship game losses will not be weighed heavily.

I like the path but part of me is so disappointed if Penn State hosts Indiana. I wanted to host a big name team from the south. Indiana I have seen so many times.

When you’re talking about a national title run I wouldn’t care who I’m playing against.. I’d just be hoping for the easiest matchup

No, that’s not what I am arguing at all. ND made the 4 team playoff over champions from conferences other than the SEC.

They are NEVER getting spot number 5 as a one loss team with their schedule over the second best SEC or B1G team.

It very well could happen right now. If PSU gets smoked by UO, they easily could slide PSU down with ND and then maybe OSU sliding up above PSU (given the OSU head to head over PSU).
