Cell phone reception lately

I’m in NE MS and have had cspire for 3 years this month after 15 + years with AT&T. I couldn’t have been happier with cspire. Up until around this weekend reception had been fantastic and I use one of their hotspot boxes for all of my internet. I have been able to watch Netflix with no buffering. But since this weekend it’s been so slow that watching anything is impossible and pulling up websites is worse than dial-up.

I’ve talked to several others in my area having the same trouble with cspire, Verizon and AT&T. Any of y’all having similar problems and what could be going on that would be effecting multiple carriers like that? I’m ignorant when it comes to that kind of stuff.

What type of data plan does CSpire have for the hotspot device? I'm looking for "rural" internet options and CSpire has a good signal in my area.

You might want to call in and let them know that you are having issues with bandwidth in your area. They may already be aware but it can't hurt. They might be able to to something with the tower to increase the bandwidth. It could also be an issue with your box itself, in which case they can replace it if it's a C Spire owned box.

Check your account and make sure you haven't exceeded some data threshold for the month. Had a friend complaining of similar a few months ago (on a different carrier), and that was it.

I just want Cspire to finally be able to use data and talk on the phone at the same time.

The boxes new are around $120 (I think they do a $4.99 for 24mos) Then the plan is a flat $25 a month for Unlimited. It’s 4G LTE for the first 25GB and then it slows to 3G. I’ve had mine since Oct and couldn’t be happier with it until the last 3-4 days and I think the new cycle date is the 26th so a 3G slowdown shouldn’t be an issue. My only real options until TEPA gets the broadband set up were this or hughesnet. In April I watched the entire season of The Wire on my Roku which is probably 60 hours or so with very minimal buffering even after I surpassed the 25GB. And if you want to try it I think it’s 30 days to bring it back no questions asked.

The odd thing about the sudden slowdown is my neighbors (which is are a mile away) are having similar problems, as are people with Verizon and AT&T, which makes no sense. The reason I swapped from AT&T 3 years ago is that slow service would have beeb an improvement.

Internet Options
Speaking of hotspots, what’s my best option for internet to stream Netflix or amazon? Preferably using a “hotspot” or something without going with traditional internet.

I’m in Starkville.
Can’t get metro, cspire or att internet.
Hughes net is garbage.

That sounds like a device limitation, maybe? I'd swear I can browse the web on my iPhone while talking on the phone, but I haven't had any reason to do so for a long time. Or are you talking about streaming and talking on the phone?

You can’t use cellular data and talk at the same time. You can use WiFi and talk. It’s because cspire still uses an old technology.

As I understand, Verizon and AT&T own all of your major cellphone towers. The other companies subcontract or have agreements to use these towers. Verizon and AT&T customers have first right to voice/data transfers.

I just did an Verizon LTE test and got 33 down, 10 up, which I think is pretty normal. It must not have moved eastward into north Alabama yet.

Even Verizon had the same problem at least up until a few years ago. It may be different now. AT&T is the only network I’ve ever not had that problem.
