Cedar Rapids sure seems to have a lot of teenagers in the news for shootings lately. What’s really pathetic is most of them have already been charged with crimes and are felons in possession.
Great parenting by this group of parents.

Cedar Rapids is the 22nd-best-run city in the country, according to new rankings from WalletHub.

The group compared the quality of public services delivered to residents against the city’s overall budget to understand how effectively public funds are being managed, the company said in a news release

The group analyzed a series of measures from 148 of the nation’s largest cities to identify those with the most efficient operations. The study developed a “Quality of Services” score based on 36 metrics across six service areas and then compared those results with each city’s per-capita budget.

Cedar Rapids was ranked 22nd, while Madison, Wisconsin, ranked 24.

Des Moines, the only other Iowa city ranked, was 89th.

Provo, Utah, was the top-ranked city; followed by Nampa, Idaho; and Manchester, New Hampshire, rounding out the top three cities. Sioux Falls, South Dakota, finished sixth, while Lincoln, Nebraska, finished ninth.

A number of the nation’s largest cities are at the bottom of the best-run list, with San Francisco ranked last, based on WalletHub’s metrics.

Just calling out the increase in shootings by teenagers in Cedar Rapids.
It’s only going to get worse when these kids have no parental guidance. I heard on the news that one of the 18 year olds recently shot and killed in gun violence has a 2 year old. How many years until that kid has a gun in its hands.

Feel free to talk about the post instead of crying about some stuff you make up in your mind.
What are your thoughts about the growing gun violence among teens in Cedar Rapids?

I think your toddler should join the CRPD and start cracking down on the vigilantes.
You do realize that’s not going to change anything unless the city/county/state actually do something about all the criminals he arrests. If you bothered to read up, you’d see pretty much all of these teens have already been arrested at least once before for a major crime.
But trolls gonna troll so of course you didn’t read anything.

C.R. man who attacked woman faces up to 12 years in prison
He broke through several doors at C.R. wireless store
TRISH MEHAFFEY
The Gazette
CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man, who physically assaulted a woman last month at a cellphone store, pleaded guilty Thursday to burglary and assault charges.
Tykees N.Z. Weems, 19, pleaded to second-degree burglary, a Class C felony. He faces up to 10 years in prison. He also will make written pleas to first-degree harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor; and assault causing bodily injury — no intent, a serious misdemeanor.
Weems faces up to 12 years at sentencing, which hasn’t been set at this time.
According to a criminal complaint, Weems refused to leave the Cricket Wireless store at 124 Collins Road NE after being asked, then physically assaulted a woman, who went behind three locked doors to escape him.
The victim told police she went into a private room in the store and locked the door, but Weems kicked open the door and attempted to assault her. She then fled to a bathroom and locked the door, and Weems threatened to kick in that door and hurt her. He also told her she was “dead” to him, the complaint stated.
Weems eventually forced open the door, grabbed the woman by the arm, dragged her out into the public area of the store and repeatedly punched and kicked her until a witness stepped in, according to the complaint. Police said that witness was pushed to the floor by Weems.
The woman escaped to another bathroom, but Weems kicked in that door and punched and kicked her again, the complaint stated.
Police said the woman had visible injuries, and door damage costs were estimated at $1,500.

CEDARRAPIDS—A Cedar Rapids man is accused of stabbing someone a dozen times early Saturday in a hallway at The Heights apartment complex, according to a Linn County criminal complaint.

Police found 34-year-old Gavin D.V. Miller shoeless and with blood on his hands, wandering near student apartments on the Coe College campus, according to the criminal complaint and Cedar Rapids Police Department arrest records.

Surveillance video showed Miller shoving a man out of an apartment into a hallway at The Heights, located at 1500 Second Ave. SE, then using his right hand in a stabbing motion on the man’s upper body, according to the complaint. Police said the victim was in a defensive posture during the encounter and blood covered the hallway. The victim sustained about a dozen stab wounds and was transported to a hospital, according to the complaint. Miller was arrested and taken to the Linn County Jail on charges of willful injury resulting in serious injury, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor.

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man was charged Friday with nine offenses after being found in a McDonald’s bathroom with a loaded firearm and ammunition.

Doron E. Willis, 36, was charged with:

• Trafficking stolen weapons — used in crime, a Class C felony.

• Possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a firearm by a domestic abuse offender, interference with official acts — armed with firearm, possession of a controlled substance — marijuana, all Class D felonies.

• Possession of a controlled substance — marijuana, persons ineligible to carry a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a prescription drug, all serious misdemeanors.

• Possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

Cedar Rapids police officers responded to a McDonald’s, 610 33rd Ave. SW, on Wednesday for a report of a man in the bathroom with a firearm, according to a complaint. When officers went into the bathroom, they found Willis with a marijuana joint in his hand, and when they tried to arrest him, he attempted to flee from the bathroom.

Police then arrested him, and officers found a loaded gun, 12-gauge shotgun shells and ammunition for a 9mm and .22 firearms in his backpack, the complaint stated. The gun had been reported as stolen from Marion. In the backpack, they also found THC gummies, methamphetamine and Adderall without a prescription.

Willis previously has been convicted of domestic abuse assault.

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man was charged Thursday for carrying a gun while at a preschool in downtown Cedar Rapids.

Ryan Joseph Johnson, 42, was charged with carrying a weapon — on school grounds, a Class D felony and persons ineligible to carry a dangerous weapon and possession of a cannabidiol, both serious misdemeanors. A judge, during Johnson’s initial appearance Thursday, ordered a $7,000 bond, and Johnson paid the bond and was released pending trial.

According to the criminal complaint, Johnson was arrested at Kinder-Care preschool and during a search after his arrest, police found him in possession of a Ruger LCP handgun and cannabidiol. The complaint doesn’t state if Johnson was an employee, a parent of a student or in the building for another reason.

Don't forget about the CR criminals coming to Iowa City to perpetuate their crimes...

C.R. teen charged in Ped Mall shooting will claim self-defense
He also is asking for separate trial from co-defendant

IOWA CITY — Damarian Jones, charged with shooting five people April 19 on the Pedestrian Mall, plans to claim self-defense at trial and is asking a judge to separate his trial from a co-defendant accused of giving Jones the gun that night.
Jones, 18, charged with five counts of attempted murder and other charges, filed his notice of defense and the motion to sever Wednesday in Johnson County District Court. His lawyer indicated to a judge earlier this month that Jones might ask to separate his trial from co-defendant Ka’Mari L. Dozier, 17, of Cedar Rapids.
Jones’ lawyers, in the motion, said a joint trial would prejudice Jones. He has waived his speedy trial, and the lawyers will not be prepared to go to trial Aug. 18, given the “volume of discovery and nature of issues in this case,” the motion stated.
The prosecution had planned to try Jones and Dozier together, but Johnson County Attorney Rachel Zimmermann Smith said during another hearing earlier this month that both defendants have the right to ask for separate trials.
A judge hasn’t ruled on the motion to sever.
Dozier demanded a speedy trial, and his trial remains set, as of Friday, for Aug. 18.
Jones is charged with three counts of willful injury, assault causing serious injury, two counts of willful injury causing bodily injury and one count of going armed with intent. Jones fled Iowa City after the shooting, and police issued a warrant for his arrest in April.
The U.S. Marshals Service tracked him to Forest Park, Georgia. He was extradited back to Iowa in May.
Dozier was charged later with supplying a gun to Jones during a break in the large fight that ensued about 1:45 a.m. in the 100 block of East College Street, according to police. Jones is accused of firing six times into the crowd, injuring five people who weren’t involved in the fight.
Dozier is charged with five counts of attempted murder and joint criminal conduct for supplying the firearm to Jones, police said. Dozier is prohibited from possessing firearms because he’s under age 18.
Several others are charged with participating in the fight that preceded the shooting.
Also, Isaiah M. Bates, 18, of Cedar Rapids, is accused of making arrangements to get Jones out of Iowa City and later conducted internet searches related to the disposal of firearms. Bates is charged with obstruction, accessory after the fact and participating in a riot.
Police said they had video evidence of Jones on the Ped Mall engaged in the fight that involved as many as 40 people. Police haven’t released any details on how the fight started or who, if anyone, was being targeted.
Police have not identified the shooting victims — three of them University of Iowa students — but did say they were bystanders and not involved in the fight.
Police said one shooting victim suffered a life-threatening head injury, another person was seriously injured and three others received lesser injuries.
According to a GoFundMe page, the woman with the head injury — identified as Miranda Peters — is a student at the University of Iowa who is studying to be a physician assistant. Her sister, Janjay Peters, who set up the page, has provided updates on her sister’s progress. She said her sister was recovering slowly and making improvements every week.
According to the most recent post from July 3, Miranda has started physical rehabilitation. The fundraiser is up to over $213,000, which will go toward Miranda’s care, rehabilitation and continuing medical expenses, her sister said.

Mississippi North has a severe issue with prison overcrowding because Republican leadership has refused to properly staff those institutions.

And prison officials have been BEGGING Kimberly Reynolds to address the issue and she refuses to.

She has proposed building three new prisons knowing the current ones are understaffed.
Her math doesn't add up.

Consequently, judges are FORCED to shorten sentences or grant parole earlier than should be.

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Marion man, who faced three state court trials for offenses involving firearms, now faces two because charges were dropped last month when federal prosecutors indicted him in the same incident.

Royal Rio Jones, 23, was charged in May in Linn County District Court in an April 19 shooting where bullets struck a car with three people inside. The shooting startled a tenant at a nearby apartment when bullets pierced his mattress while he was sleeping, according to a criminal complaint.

Jones was indicted July 21 in U.S. District Court, for possession of ammunition by a felon, which carries a federal sentence of 15 years in prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office asked the Linn County Attorney’s Office to dismiss the case because the federal case alleges the same facts and circumstances in the April 19 incident, according to court documents.

Jones has a previous conviction for possession of a firearm by a felon in 2022 and was released after serving about two years of a fiveyear sentence.

There are no details in the indictment, but the state court complaint stated three people — Arianna Jackson, Rowen Shaughnessy and a 17-year-old — told police they were in one vehicle April 19 when a man, later identified as Jones, left a nearby apartment building, raised a gun and started firing at the car. The three quickly fled the scene.

Witnesses nearby told police Jones and another person then fled on foot and were seen near some trees at a nearby apartment complex.

When Cedar Rapids police responded, they saw broken glass in the parking lot and collected 10 .45-caliber shell casings of the same brand, the complaint stated. Officers determined one of the bullets fired at Jackson’s car struck the rear passenger side of a nearby Chrysler 200.

Two other bullets damaged a building at 5100 16th Ave. SW, with one of the bullets entering an apartment, the complaint stated. That bullet came just under the occupant’s bedroom window and struck his mattress where he was sleeping. Another bullet entered his living room just over the sofa.

Officers found a Glock .45 by the trees where witnesses said Jones and the other man fled after shooting at Jackson’s car, according to the complaint. The Glock contained a .45-caliber cartridge of the same brand as the casings collected from the parking lot.

Later during a test fire of the Glock, officers determined the shell casings found at the scene were fired from that gun.

Officers also found video of the parking lot to help identify the shooter as Jones.

Jones also was charged earlier this month with first-degree robbery, along with two other men — Mikael Anthony White, 21, of Marion, and Josiah Q. Leach, 19, of Cedar Rapids — in an April 28 carjacking.

The three are accused of holding Michael Green at gunpoint, pistol-whipping, robbing him and making him drive to his home where they thought he had “a safe full of money.”

In another case, Jones is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon-second offense. Jones is accused of running from Marion police during the robbery and carjacking investigation when they attempted to interview him April 29, according to a criminal complaint.

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man is accused of repeatedly trying to swallow bags of cocaine Tuesday to destroy evidence, according to a Linn County criminal complaint.

Police said they observed William A. Rutledge holding bags of packaged narcotics while asleep as a passenger in a vehicle parked in the 800 block of Shaver Road NE, according to the criminal complaint.

When officers asked Rutledge to exit the vehicle, he began eating the drugs to destroy the evidence. As officers grabbed Rutledge, he pulled away and tried to get into the back seat to consume more of the drugs, according to the complaint. Officers collected the drugs and placed them on the vehicle’s hood. Although handcuffed and walking toward the patrol vehicle, Rutledge made a quick gesture and tried to eat the drugs from the vehicle’s hood, according to the complaint.

Police field-tested the white crystalline substance and determined it was cocaine.

According to the criminal complaint, officers found marijuana, $1,587 in cash and two cellphones.

Rutledge was arrested on charges of intent to deliver cocaine — under 100 grams, a Class C felony; failure to affix a drug tax stamp, a Class D felony; interference with official acts — obstructing prosecution, an aggravated misdemeanor; possession of a controlled substance — marijuana; and interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor.

Rutledge is being held at the Linn County Jail on a $19,000 cash or surety bond.

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Marion man, previously convicted for crashing into a vehicle and injuring a driver that prematurely terminated her pregnancy, pleaded this week to lesser charges for having indecent contact with two children.

Trenton Eiben, 43, originally charged with indecent contact with a child, an aggravated misdemeanor and indecent exposure, a serious misdemeanor, pleaded Monday to two misdemeanor charges of simple assault.

According to the plea, Eiben admitted to committing the acts July 16, 2018, through June 15, 2019, that intended to place each child in fear of immediate physical contact, which would have been “painful, injurious, insulting or offensive,” along with the ability to carry out the act.

At sentencing, the prosecutor will ask the judge to run the sentences consecutively for a total of 60 days in jail, according to court documents.

According to a criminal complaint, one child told a forensic interviewer at the UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Child Protection Center that Eiben forced her to touch him when she was 5 years old between July 16, 2018, and June 15, 2019.

Another child told an interviewer Eiben exposed himself to her during the 2018-2020 time frame, the complaint stated.

2025 CRASH

According to evidence in the crash case, Eiben had been talking with a Cedar Rapids police investigator before the crash Feb. 26, 2025. After leaving the police department, he called his wife to say he loved her before driving up to 100 mph down First Avenue E in Cedar Rapids.

Witnesses told police Eiben was eastbound down the center turn lane he crashed his Pontiac Sunfire into a Chevrolet Traverse, driven by Merylin Louise Bowden, now 40, of Cedar Rapids, who was traveling west in the 1300 block of First Avenue E.

According to the criminal complaint, witnesses described to police Eiben’s driving as “intentional and making no attempt to avoid collision.” They said Eiben had an open lane to the front and right of him, but instead drove into the westbound lanes, striking the Traverse.

Both Eiben and Bowden, who was 18 weeks pregnant, were injured and had to be extricated from their vehicles and taken to hospitals, according to the criminal complaint.

Bowden’s pregnancy was prematurely terminated as a result of her injuries.

She spent six weeks in the hospital with a broken pelvic bone and other fractures, and continues to have chronic pain every day, but most of her suffering came from having to say goodbye to her unborn child — a child she had already named and loved, Bowden said during Eiben’s sentencing in July. Eiben was sentenced in the crash to up to 25 years in prison for nonconsensual termination of a pregnancy during a forcible felony, a Class B felony, and willful injury resulting in serious injury, a Class C felony.

His sentencing on the assault convictions is set for Aug. 27.

IOWA CITY — A Cedar Rapids woman arrested Wednesday is accused of participating in an Iowa City riot with a group of five in April 2025, according to an Iowa City Police Department criminal complaint.

Police said friends of Timiyea M. Fowler, now 19, were arguing with others at 211 E. Iowa Ave at about 2 a.m. on April 20, 2025. When the fight turned physical, the others put down their phones and purses to defend themselves and were pepper- sprayed by Fowler’s friends.

According to the criminal complaint, Fowler helped jump a victim her friends were attacking. The victim’s sister tried to defend her, but also was jumped by the five.

Fowler took the victims’ belongings, drove to a nearby gas station and helped destroy both phones, valued at about $1,700, according to the complaint. Police said the total cost of the belongings taken was about $2,580.

Fowler was taken to the Johnson County Jail and charged with participating in a riot, second- degree theft and second-degree criminal mischief, all Class D felonies. She also was charged with assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor.

Police said the assault and mischief were captured on video.
