Realistically, if DR is even close to as good as advertised-- Do we really want the kid sitting the bench and then playing a maximum of two seasons if healthy followed by opting out of the bowl game in his third year?I know the big news is DR but is there a chance Casey comes here and gives DR a little playing time this year and then it will be his the next three years?
I think he'll be here only 2 years anyway. I think he can enter the draft after his first 2 years as long as he turns 20 by a certain date? My thought was CT would be planned to be the backup by October at the latest.Realistically, if DR is even close to as good as advertised-- Do we really want the kid sitting the bench and then playing a maximum of two seasons if healthy followed by opting out of the bowl game in his third year?
Don’t want to say DR is guaranteed to start, but DR is guaranteed to start. Casey may comeback in a limited role under a NIL deal as a walk on. Just do not see a ton of playing time in his future injury or not. He may even become a GA under Rhule if he were to forgo his final year of eligibility.I know the big news is DR but is there a chance Casey comes here and gives DR a little playing time this year and then it will be his the next three years?
For the NFL draft, you must be three years removed from HS. These media types that we all listen to need to drop the narrative the Dylan is going to sit behind some placeholder transfer QB for one year. It is not going to happen. Rhule didn't bring in the highest rated recruit in program history so that he'll play 1 1/2 to 2 years max.I think he'll be here only 2 years anyway. Purdy is a real QB but he only sticks around if he cannot find a suitable place to transfer.I want DR starting in the Fall. A raw and inexperienced Raiola is probably still much better than HH or Purdy who aren’t even real QB’s. Get Kaelin ready as #2. Build for the future
Agree with HH... Do not agree with you on Purdy. I see potential with himI want DR starting in the Fall. A raw and inexperienced Raiola is probably still much better than HH or Purdy who aren’t even real QB’s. Get Kaelin ready as #2. Build for the future
He won't be changing his throwing mechanics. Just like TMart. You can only do so much with a guy who cannot really do it right. It is amazing that they completed as many passes as they did. Kind of like trying to figure out how Arnold Palmer could be such a great golfer with that very unorthodox golf swing of his. My issue really with HH is not that he is incapable of passing or that he needs to change his mechanics. My issue is that he does not have good vision, does not see open receivers, and is a turnover machine. There have been many QB's with poor mechanics and only so-so as pure passers who nevertheless were productive because they were good at taking care of the football and good at reading defenses and seeing open guys. HH has none of those qualities. I do not think he ever will. But others disagree. So we will see...Purdy is a real QB but he only sticks around if he cannot find a suitable place to transfer.
HH is also still a raw QB. They threw HH in there and asked him do a little bit of everything. He took some major hits and kept playing-- probably would have killed Casey. If HH changed some of his throwing mechanics, he would be a good backup.
Of those two I do like Purdy the best. I hope he stays as a backup.Agree with HH... Do not agree with you on Purdy. I see potential with him
In Fleck's first few years at Minnesota, he used a tight end as his wildcat QB. Seth Green was his name.He won't be changing his throwing mechanics. Just like TMart. Agree. Part of the reason he didn't go to Georgia is because their qb is coming back. Kid expects to play NOW!For the NFL draft, you must be three years removed from HS. Seth Green was a QB turned TE if I remember correctly. I also recall Nebraska being interested in him as a QB.In Fleck's first few years at Minnesota, he used a tight end as his wildcat QB. Seth Green was his name.
Green rushed 114 times for 388 yards and 15 touchdowns over three seasons. He completed six of seven passes for 57 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also had six receptions for 83 yards and no touchdowns.
That's a role I could see Haarberg playing. Would give us a weapon in short-yardage situations and on an occasional first down in the red zone. Of course, it would be hard to pull a talent like Raiola anytime during a game, even if only for a play or two.
I had the same thought. Makes sense for all parties imo.If Casey does come back, I'm curious if part of the reason is to get into coaching? Basically act as a player-coach this year and then take a grad assistant job next year. That was basically my first thought when I heard he 'might' be back. No clue if any of that is accurate.
It makes a ton of sense to have CT here. But I don't know why he'd come.Yeah, let's bring in Casey Thompson for his 7th year and bench the 5 star kid for a year even if Casey won't even be able to practice in the spring. Makes total sense, Jimmy from Minny.
Well I don't think Casey has an NFL career in his future so if he wants to stay in football he'll need to become a coach. He'd likely be looking at whatever best positions him toward that future. That would be the motivation. It makes a ton of sense to have CT here. But I don't know why he'd come.
Let's say Raiola is opening day starter. Just spitballing there.
If the QB room stays as is:
Game 2: Colorado. If some douchebag, loudmouth Buffalo linebacker rolls up on DR'S leg after the whistle again (can't imagine why I would think that might happen), here's where we would be at:
1) DK off the bench starting as a freshman. He might be ready for that. A lot of people think he's going to need development.
2) Purdy or HH filling in. We all saw what that looks like this year. Please, no. Just no.
If CT is here, that's a dude that can at least play and has experience. Not certain exactly what his motivation would be, though to be here.
To be eligible for the draft, players must have been out of high school for at least three years .I think he'll be here only 2 years anyway. I think he can enter the draft after his first 2 years as long as he turns 20 by a certain date? My thought was CT would be planned to be the backup by October at the latest.
With his injury last Sept he would be cleared for contact by summer at the earliest. I do think he would add some needed experience to the room. If he can parlay this for his personal gain too I’m all for itWell I don't think Casey has an NFL career in his future so if he wants to stay in football he'll need to become a coach. He'd likely be looking at whatever best positions him toward that future. That would be the motivation.
Personally barring a transfer in I think we NEED both HH and Purdy to stay. We need at least 3 if not 4 guys who can play and their experience is valuable.Of those two I do like Purdy the best. I hope he stays as a backup.
This is the prevailing opinion. Most likely the reason he is here.If Casey does come back, I'm curious if part of the reason is to get into coaching? True. But we gotta cut back numbers somewhere. But maybe QB is not the place you want to do that.Personally barring a transfer in I think we NEED both HH and Purdy to stay. We need at least 3 if not 4 guys who can play and their experience is valuable.
Unless Longval is better than HH I think you need 4 scholarship QBs. HH is a good enough athlete that he could be a Swiss Army knife guy and valuable travel roster piece. Guys like that are almost like having an extra roster spot. I think it would be a mistake to run Purdy off. As we sit I don’t see us adding a portal guy to back up Raiola. Purdy has seen what happened to Smothers and Casey when they transferred. Hopefully that gets him to at least stay another year.True. But we gotta cut back numbers somewhere. But maybe QB is not the place you want to do that.
Taco Tuesday. For the love of all things holy enough with the Casey Thompson talk.
