He does potentially present a matchup nightmare for DBs. Huge target. Wide catch radius. Excellent speed. Never seemed thick enough to play as an in line TE.I think he’ll have every bit the impact that Haarberg did at TE.
Looks like they are definitely going to be a spread team. Hopefully one of our 5,000 receivers can catch a pass or at the very least block the perimeter.Glad you started this thread. I was going to ask the board when I saw that - does this guy have the goods? I had such high hopes for him and still do this season - but I wonder if the jump from 8-man is too high and the tape was too good to be true. It's an honest question, not meant to stir the pot.
Our TE room seems light and the WR/Slot seems heavy - things that make you go Hmm.....
I agree with this. DR was the antithesis of a leader. everyone in the locker room had to have hated his guts.I think it’s gonna help us a lot to have a quarterback that’s not running around cosplaying Patrick Mahomes every second of the day, thinking more about imitating every throw, adjusting his headband endlessly and so on.
And throwing off-balance changeups that took forever to reach the receiver - who would then be blamed for his inability to wrestle the ball away from the DB.I think it’s gonna help us a lot to have a quarterback that’s not running around cosplaying Patrick Mahomes every second of the day, thinking more about imitating every throw, adjusting his headband endlessly and so on.
Carter is probably heavy enough to play TE if that weight was on a smaller frame. He just doesn’t look thick enough to take on bigger edges.I like the move. He is too light to be a TE. And slot receiver does not have to have blazing speed. Westerkamp was probably slower than Carter. And Carter will be a good blocker on the perimeter
Carter has elite athleticism for his size. I believe he’s a sub 4.55 40 guy and can jump out of the gym. Needs to stay healthy and that might be easier for him if he isn’t trying to block 260 pounders.I like the move. He is too light to be a TE. And slot receiver does not have to have blazing speed. This is why I'm not sweating the recruitment of Hudson. 10% chance Hudson decommits and joins NU. Then it's a 20% chance he plays and our staff has any clue how to use him.Good move IMO.
Mentality is more important than size in college football. You can't teach someone to be physical at the LOS, you have it or you don't.Carter is probably heavy enough to play TE if that weight was on a smaller frame. He just doesn’t look thick enough to take on bigger edges.

I had multiple 8man coaches tell me he would be a good WR in college. I can tell you their game plan was to run right at Carter Nelson on defense to take him out of the game on offense where he was a much bigger threat. Cornicator and I went rounds on this a few years ago.
Pretty much this.I hope he stays healthy.
There was some discussion of him being a tweener coming out of high school. He’s never looked like a TE to me but neither did Jay Novacek in the NFL. Might be one of the reasons Tom didn’t offer him. I THINK Carter is a better fit at WR. They’ve tried to bulk him up in to a TE and I don’t think that’s his natural physique or position. The guy could still be an important piece.Sigh
Another softie
No wonder the staff are so enamored with him

Meh. You’re infatuated with the word soft. You would never say it to the face of most of these kids. IF you did hopefully they would restrain themselves from breaking you in two.WR/TE, 250lb/215lb
soft is soft
and we have way too goddam much of it

OR right school giving him time to heal and mature. Right OC seeing his potential as a WR. His injuries have limited his utilization. He’s moving to a spot where hopefully he doesn’t take the physical beating he incurs as a TE. EVERYBODY including Bama recruited him as a TE. He hasn’t developed in to that physically. Some of it has just been bad luck with the injuries that started before he even got to Lincoln.Nelson is like Haarberg... raw talent, lack of development by staff, underutilized, misused, wrong school, wrong time, wrong coach.
Ya that’s why ND , Georgia and Bama offered The kid is soft . You are such a moron you have no clue how fkn stupid you are .WR/TE, 250lb/215lb

Agreed. I envision himself a hybrid. Just wasn't working out at TE and from what I've been hearing blocking was where he was struggling as well as injury. Could be a big mismatch in slot or spread out a littleGood move IMO.
I think 2 things can be true at the same time here. One, Nelson isnt tough enough (soft) for this level of football and two, he could still kick my ***.Meh. You’re infatuated with the word soft. You would never say it to the face of most of these kids. IF you did hopefully they would restrain themselves from breaking you in two.![]()
I've seen literally one play of CN from high school. Folks went crazy that he (CN) ran down a RB who broke a long run only to be caught from behind by CN. Nelson may have knocked the ball loose too while tackling the RB.Glad you started this thread. I was going to ask the board when I saw that - does this guy have the goods? As we all should know by now, 5 star athleticism doesn’t always translate to a P4 football field. I’m just giving him the benefit of the doubt. He’s had several serious injuries and I always questioned the expectations for him as a TE. The number of plays/targets he could get this year with Lindenmeyer showing what he’s shown were going to be very limited. He’s still a guy you want in your WR rotation IMO. We have other TEs who probably are more natural in line TEs than CN as backups.I've seen literally one play of CN from high school. Anyway, personally I didn't see an amazing play from CN because the only reason why that RB broke for a long run is because Nelson got sealed by some lineman and it was too easy of a block. Just seemed like terrible effort on CN's part until he had to chase that RB down.
I would much rather have seen a hard hit at/near the LOS rather than for him to easily get blocked just to make a play down field.
BUT good for him for not giving up after messing up. I'm just surprised an athlete like him got blocked as easily as he did. Threw up some red flags in terms of 100% effort all the time and toughness.
Exactly. Just like Fidone he came in as a highly touted TE who everybody recruited as a TE, only to be hampered by injuries. I think this move to slot receiver is a great idea. If Coleandra can hit the short slant patterns, Nelson will be a big physical target with the strong hands needed for those slant passes.OR right school giving him time to heal and mature. Lol - oh the shame that he might be making $80,000! Injuries have obviously played their part in is lack of contributions. So, this is year 3 for Carter. And he hasn't yet broken 100 CAREER receiving yards. But he's getting paid likely more than most teachers.
Yeah. Get fvcked, bud.
He was probably always best suited as a stretch TE/WR. It doesn’t seem that he’s physically able to handle the TE part of it. Looking at his recent social media posts, he doesn’t look like a guy that weighs 235. He wouldn’t be the first guy who didn’t grow in to what we hoped physically. DTs seem to be another spot where we have too many guys a little light in the britches. I repeat this often, without Boyd’s vitamins, we’re not going to grow the monsters we used to grow.Exactly.
