Good decision on his part. He looks to be third string at Iowa for at least the next couple of seasons. Good luck, Carson may!

Among the young/incoming guys (Labas, May, Lainez, Resar), isn’t May considered the least mobile?

It could have been considered another Deuce Hogan moment when May was passed over for LaPorta. When you have a healthy scholarship QB on the roster, why do you need a star tight end to be an "emergency QB" and then actually give him a series in a bowl game while the scholarship QB is ignored? No wonder May is hitting the portal. No wonder Hogan transferred. It's probably best for all parties, but still, from here the LaPorta/May thing seems pretty weird.

I think far too much is being made of the LaPorta angle on this. I think LaPorta having a few plays as a wildcat QB was more about adding a wrinkle to the offense and rewarding a veteran player than anything else. It was kind of similar to how the staff showcases ISM in the 2019 Holiday Bowl, even letting him throw a pass. It’s not like LaPorta played an entire quarter at QB — he played one series … it was essentially no more than an extended trick play. (If we had gotten a first down, I think Labas would have come right back in.)

May’s transfer probably had much more to do with how McNamara’s arrival, and how May thinks he fits in to the future offense, especially with the QBs coming in.

is May going from 3rd string at Iowa to being 3rd string for somebody else?
what's the point of that?

Lets be honest i am not sure there is anybody that trusts KF or BF to evaluate a QB they seem clueless as heck May could just as easily go start somewhere else and put up huge numbers that is hos dumb the Iowa coaches are at evaluating their own QB's!

LaPorta running the wildcat had nothing to do with May leaving.
Or should I say, if it did then that says more about May than anyone else.

May was the last of KOK's QB recruits. Cade is coming in to start next year, Labas won the bowl audition, and if things really get weird Carson is probably behind a healthy SP.
Marco is BF's first real solo QB recruit, so the writing is on the wall there.

Am I bummed he is leaving - a bit. I loved some of the 'It' he showed in his high school tape. I honestly think he was a steal out of hs.

I wish him the best.

I am a huge KF fan— despite moments of frustration earlier this season related to his unwillingness to play more than one QB. Unfortunately he appears to be a bit blind to the way QBs want to be treated. Players want to play in games and be treated with respect.

In the era of the transfer portal coaches need to accommodate them to some degree. If the margin of error is always too thin for that to happen, or the QBs aren’t good enough, there are other problems to fix.

KF needs to put getting more than QB1 into a handful of games on his list of things to fix for next season or we could become a revolving door for QBs.

Are you saying they should game plan to get the 4th string true freshman into the game during the season?

Probably part of the participation ribbon generation.
Or the generation that understands you need to have at least one, if not two, backup QBs ready to play. As you may have heard, it's not uncommon for QBs to get hurt or there's the one about the backup QB being one play away from becoming the starter. When Stanzi went down in 2009, KF didn't have his backup QB ready to play, and Iowa lost its undefeated season as a result.

The record is clear: KF doesn't know offense, and he especially doesn't know QBs or how to prepare backups to be ready to step in at a moment's notice.

Participation ribbon. LOL

Correct, although KOK was the primary recruiter on Lainez, BF on Resar. Personally I hope we can keep both these kids in the stable. Resar doesn't get mentioned much.

McNamara, Hill, Labas, Lainez and Resar makes for a pretty solid QB room. Also pretty crowded. Wouldn't surprise me if one moves on, eventually.

I suspect Carson may have informed staff of his intentions well before the bowl game. Kirk publicly announced Labas the starter, which typically he doesn't do.

Loser of the battle for QB2 transfers at the end of next season is my bet.

I certainly wish him nothing but the best. It appears the situation at Iowa isn’t going to work for him and I hope he finds a good landing spot.

It would be nice to see the 2nd string get an opportunity when the 1st string isn't getting the job done or during a blowout. But that doesn't seem to happen.

An interesting side effect of KF's QB handling is that we do see some transfers such that there is almost a cycle of QB's where it seems like you only see every other one or every third one play in a Hawkeye uniform.
