about the rule on the kickoff. How dumb is this rule? The player thinks it’s going out of bounds and it ends up dying inbounds and just because he gets his feet on the sideline before touching it, his team gets rewarded with a penalty putting the ball on the 35 yard line.

I agree it's an incredibly stupid rule. At least in this instance, the refs actually called that one exactly right, it's just a stupid rule. If the player ran to catch the ball and his momentum carried him out, he would be called out where he ran out, why should him touching the ball from out be different? Should either just be out where he touched it, or a penalty like mentioned above.

If a player on the kicking team intentionally runs out of bounds and then re-enters play, it's a penalty (happened in this game). On any given offensive play, if a player on offense intentionally goes out, he can't be the first to touch the ball, it's a penalty. Why is receiving a kickoff any different? If you intentionally go out and are the first to touch the ball, penalty for illegal touch, ball goes where it was touched.

I give an A+ that the player knew the rule, the coaches obviously coached it, and the player had the presence of mind to do it. But of course, it is a massively stupid rule.

I feel like we've seen it a lot (relatively speaking) since Ty Montgomery did it a few years ago for the Packers. Prior to that, I recall only seeing it once a couple decades ago in a Dallas-Oakland game.

It was Cobb first but then Montgomery but there’s a pretty popular YouTube video titled “knowing the rules” and Cobb’s play is the cover on this video

Awful rule, but also avoidable if we could get more kicks into the end zone. We got dominated on special teams yesterday.

Yes, this is a very stupid rule. Going out of bounds and touching the ball? Dumb!

I'm no rules expert but this is my humble opinion. I can see this rule being in effect if the ball was in the air and the player was completely out of bounds. This was not the case as the ball was on the ground and the player's hand was in bounds on the ground. In this case, because of the hand being inbound and then the other hand touching the ball, IMHO I believe the ball the ball should've been ruled down were he touched it.

It’s a live ball if a Nebraska player got down there he could have recovered it. So if it’s a live ball it should be down at the 3. That is one of the most stupidest rules

I don't mind the rule, but it does seem like illegal touching. There's no way it will change though because it helps to lessen the chance of a returner getting lit up.

I agree the kick returner made a very smart play, but what a stupid rule. If the KR did the same thing with his feet in the end zone and the ball at the 1 yard line, it wouldn't be a touchback.
