She mentioned who she’s had to share the mayor title with. She mentioned Jake Mangum and then AJ....in the SAME DAMN SENTENCE.
Listening to it, i don't think she was being malicious, by any means. She just didn't choose her words wisely, and it was just a dumb decision to include AJ in that sentence. She was trying to make a point of great players she had shared the stage with, and was trying to make the point that this was the greatest. She never got sort of sidetracked and never made that point. It just came off as dumb, more than anything.
She said something along the lines of “I’ve had to share the title of Mayor of Starkville with Jake Mangum and A.J. Brown, maybe one of these guys will take that nickname, too.”
It was really stupid to bring up, and I’d bet privately she regrets saying it, but she’s refused to apologize for it.

I was listening .It didn't hit me till I saw it here. She probably doesn't want to burn a bridge to his money. Bless her heart but she is a damn politician, they can't help it when it comes to money.
This was it. It was super awkward and cringeworthy. You could tell she immediately regretted it and it threw her off. I was watching it on tv and it sounded like a maroon white chant was trying to get started while she was speaking after she said it. Just another example of an out of touch politician who can’t read the room and makes a weird joke that doesn’t stick. It’s a Mississippi State celebration and he has nothing to do with Mississippi State baseball. Her choosing to fight with people over it on Twitter isn’t helping get passed it

You must know your audience when preparing a speech. She obviously was unprepared. That was dumb as sh**. I’d try to vote her out just on that.

Why do politicians never apologize when they screw up? Just “water under the bridge” what a lame response she is giving.. A kid from Starkville that chose to go to the rival of the school that just won the championship should have had no mention in a speech that should have been only about MSU. She instead decided to talk about herself and then insult the very people she is supposed to be there celebrating. Do the laws in Starkville call for Mayor recalls? When you double down on your idiotic speech that everyone in the world knows was inappropriate you get inappropriate comments back. A simple “I missed the mark and will do better next time” would have sufficed but she dug her heels in and resused to admit her mishap.

I thought it was typical politician - she took the opportunity to speak longer than anyone wanted to hear from her. It was rambling, unprepared, awkward, and the AJ comment was inappropriate.
Just congratulate the team, read the proclamation, give key to the city and sit down.

That’s the thing. She has embraced the University more than any mayor I remember. I lived there from 94-06. Hell, people were shitting on her for going to too many baseball games in March.
Yep. If you are a grown up and you are actually mad on a Saturday morning about this then you might have some other issues.
I think it’s obvious that some just don’t like the mayor for other reasons as well. I’m grateful that Starkville has had mayors like her and Wiseman who care about having a positive relationship with the University. It was the opposite for a long, long time, and there is a significant contingent in Starkville who would still like to see it that way.

Continually trying to defend her comment and Twitter actions that followed that comment makes you a blind sheep. Everyone is fine with a slip up in a speech. The problem is when she takes to Twitter to let everyone know they don’t know what they are talking about and her comment was perfectly acceptable. Her doubling down is the only reason anyone is still talking about this.
This is sort of unbelievable. But then again we are dealing with someone who is clearly out of touch with reality. Her clown show continued online via twitter. I know nothing about her or anything she has done for Starkville. I will, however, remember her for sharing this celebration with AJ Brown.
And I get it. I hate those 17’ers too, but this is baseball. Do they even have a D-1 team or is it a club like our men’s soccer? I know they like to waste beer at their cute little stadium:
