Can someone please explain the onside kick attempt

Greg is quite intentional with his decisions in these types of games. It could be as simple as wanted to change things up and put some wild goose chase film out there for opposing coaches to thumb through. It was Norfolk State. It just doesn’t matter either way
He does things for reasons he thinks are important which often are not. He thinks he’s smarter than everyone one, but the opposite is true.

This reminds me of Schiano illustrious ploy of not announcing the starting QB in Game 1 against Cincinnati years ago. Asked about this, coach Brian Kelly laughed and said Schiano’s gamesmanship would make no difference to his game prep. Cinci, in the dark about who would start at QB, put a 60 minute beatdown on us. 48-14 in Piscataway or something close to that.

Greg’s ignorance is often exposed.

It was great in this specific way.. if Greg found out that it needed a lot more practice before he'd consider trying it again, unless absolutely forced by the game situation. Even then.. maybe he tries a bloop.. always wondered why you never see an onsides attempt where teh kicker blasts it directly at an opponent hoping for a rebound. They must practice different tactics and that why everyone goes for the high-hop thing.

There was one done this season. Forget where and by whom. But did see it on a highlight show.

They literally kicked it right at someone.

I just realized, I didn’t see this on the highlights.

I was actually watching this game and forgot when posting in the thread.

Man, I am getting old. 🤷‍♂️

I’d pay good money to figure out why the hell I got quoted in this thread @RutgersAl

Already explained ITT

3:45 min mark

Many TKR posters focus on the Illinois field goal timeout.

Also important to point out is the following play, the play that won the game. The Illinois wide receiver, Pat Bryant, scored a touchdown by catching a ball at the 22 surrounded by five Rutgers defenders. When Pat crossed the 20, all 5 defenders were inside the 20.

Pat scored without being touched.

That YAC is whack. The only player who fell to the ground was Rutgers #24 who was best positioned to make the play but instead tackled himself.

If we use our backup kicker to kick onsides kicks, it just provided a huge data point for no reason.

if he just did that to throw people off, then he’s playing 4d chess and it didn’t matter
It is whack the Greg used three place kickers in a single game.

Is that a record?

It isn’t possible for any coach to be ignorant in a game against Norfolk. The game was over before it started.

Finally put the tool on ignore. Why you all bother with the tool is beyond me.

Well sadly at this point, putting anyone on the free board on ignore would strip out like 10% of the total activity so now would be about the last time I’d start using the tool.

Brian Kelly killed an intern. Nice role model for you. Yeah he had the preices talent to run a perfect game plan vs Schiano D.. whoopee.

Greg cannot bring in that kicker again as it is all on tape. People defending the play on the basis of practicing the play need to put that in perspective

Would you bring that kicker to kick a second onside kick? He literally puked on himself before making contact.not sure he’s up to the task.
Or this is all part of Greg’s plan.

What if it was successful? Then he still could not do it again. Stupid play. This was meant in response to people who claimed he was practicing the play

It was successful we now know that kid can’t kick an onside kick. And he’s not ready for game like conditions. Greg was practicing the play. Anytime you run a play it’s essentially practice. I agree stupid play but not for the reason many have said.

Maybe he just wanted to manufacture a quasi meaningful moment for his back up kicker to expose him to more of a real feel pressure situation in case we ever need him. Who the heck knows?

I don’t think anyone is defending or trying to say this was some great decision. The point is, this was a glorified scrimmage and nobody has any idea whatsoever what Greg’s motive was behind any of his play calls. It’s impossible to deem anything a bad decision in a game with a 40+ point spread.

Yea that’s pretty much what I said. He put a back up kicker in to see if he could handle the pressure. He’s not ready. Stick with the regular guy. I have never complained about the call. I pointed out it was the worst execution I have ever seen. I kicked and punted. Onside kicks are not easy. Either you have it or you don’t.

I’ll add - there are literally no takeaways to be had by fans from the Norfolk game - not good nor bad - relating to players, coaching, etc. Even the breakdowns don’t mean much in a game like this. The scheming patterns are not necessarily going to be indicative of what we’d do in a real game - it’s all about experimentation and trying to get a handle on who has what understanding of reads and makes adjustments, etc. Last year, in a similar type of game meaningless game against Howard (who lost to Norfolk), we gave up more yards on both the ground and in the pass game. It foreshadowed nothing about what the D would be like then either.

The likelihood of that kicker seeing the field as a one off again this year is like .0000001% barring injury. Putting the backup on film instead of the primary kickoff specialist is Greg play chess again.

Honestly, it’s probably not even chess. Norfolk game film on RU is meaningless to a coach of a real team. Greg knows it and opposing coaches know it just the same.
