Seriously, I really don’t understand it. These are D1 athletes and players. We never have someone who can shoot like the O’Hearn kid 2nite. It seems like our players do not improve on offense and even regress. I like Pike but the lack of offense and shooting is overly frustrating

Not a difficult question. We are very long and athletic, but not terribly skilled. That’s our formula. No pure shooters. Most top tier programs are the same. Lights-out shooters are rare animals.
Most top tier team have at least one go-to guy they can shoot. We can’t hit 10 footers…floaters…layups….and even dunks. It makes your eyes burn .
I am legitimately trying to understand. So that’s why mid majors sometimes have better shooters? Bc they recruit a different profile of player then the P5 level teams? But then assume they can’t play the kind of D we are looking for?
^^ This. When a coach says "defense determines whether or not you win, and offense determines the margin" that's all you need to know about that coach and his focus.
Having stated that, Jones looks like he'll be a really good shooter at some point in his career at RU.
NJIT had some damn good shooters and we won. You need more than shooters to do so.
yes, scott, different kind of player. P5 and high mid major players are usually taller at each position than in low d1 but not necessarily more skilled. Recruiting is mostly about size. size matters a lot to offense and defense generally.

If I’m Pikes I hire someone NOW to do nothing whatsoever other than follow potential transfers all season long who can SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT the daylights out of the ball. I’d have to imagine it drives him nuts as well as everyone else.
We have players that can't shoot threes and the coach permits them to shoot threes. That's the answer. The coach is perfectly fine with having someone stand at the top of the three point line, dribble for 20 seconds (two years ago, at least we ran a three man weave for 20 seconds), then shoot (and miss) a contested three. I don't know why, but he is.
Answer: Pike has had no success recruiting shooters.
We have a shooter. Pike sat him when he needed valuable minutes against an easier opponent like this for 11 straight minutes because he got a ticket tack foul called against him. Someone please explain how that helps develop Jones to me. He is literally the one thing our team needs and he's on the bench.

Per the Ledger this morning " the Scarlet Knights rank 282nd in 2-point shooting percentage (42.9%) and 331st in 3-point shooting percentage (21.7%) out of 358 Division I teams."
Geo is obviously streaky, but last night he was most def. hitting his shots and was essentially on par with that guy from NJIT, albeit with more of a mixed range vs. threes only.

Pike has struck out in recruiting badly the last two classes. Hopefully he somehow fills out the 2022 class. But it’s a bad sign when you have back to back tournament seasons and there’s silence on this board for the early signing period. In contract, SHU underperformed last year, hit the transfer portal hard and beat a young Michigan team last night. It’s disgusting and disappointing. I can’t watch the same crap every night. I was so happy that we won a tournament game last year, but man there was a ton of ugly and unwatchable basketball. I really hope it doesn’t catch up to us.
I watch a ton of HS basketball. AAU basketball and practices, and many training sessions. I can tell you flat out that today's kids only work on dribbling and their handle. That is all fine and dandy until they shoot. Most kids shooting fundamentals are terrible. I dont train but I go up to kids that train with daughter and tell them flat out they need to change their shot. I've discussed iit with her trainers as she has multiple. My daughter out shoots all the boys that are her age and older. Shooting is so simple it should be the best thing you got in your bag. Get your elbow up pointed at the rim and shoot from your elbow out. You take thousands of shots and then your brain tells you how far to shoot. The only thing you have to worry about is getting the elbow up, pointed to the rim shoot elbow out and follow thru.
Virtually none of these boys have any kind of fundamentals and have been shooting that way since 2nd & 3rdcgrade and no one will step in to change shot. Most of them the elbow is tucked close to body and pointed to left 90 degrees away from hoop. They have to contort their wrists to make up for the gross misplacement of their elbow. Shots are long, short. Left and right. The job of the trainer is ball handling which is what they want. Most parents should send their kids to someone who teaches shooting only. RHJ shoots the same way. When he is on his elbow pointed to the ring but his elbow drifts way out as well that is holding him back from 85% FT'er
I explain to my daught7er her shots should be a hair long or short but nothing to the sides. If it's to the sides at all she pushed the shot with hand and not elbow out. The hand is just there to hold the ball and follow thru with roll off fingers. She has issue getting her elbow up. If She trusts her shot and technique she'll knock down alot. Once the shot starts developing from.the hip and is part of you shot you just added another moving piece that will throw off your shot off.
NJIT stinks but number 2 on their team would be a player that would enhance Rutgers offense because of his 3 point shooting.The shooting percentages for the Rutgers team against mediocre opponents has been abysmal with mostly upper class men playing.Shooting is a skill set that most players have before they enter college.Mathis is a player that typifies Rutgers recruiting.He was athletic and made most of his points driving to the basket.In the B1G many of his shots were blocked or altered while never developing the ability to create and make jump shots off the dribble.

2. Bad shooting leads to worse shot selection which leads to bad shooting numbers. It's a cycle. This is because an offense without shooters to spread the floor becomes pretty easy to defend. If Caleb McConnell is camped in the corner, his defender knows that he can slack out. I guarantee you in the team film session, this defender has been told "a possession that ends with a Caleb McConnell three point attempt is a win for us." So he can sag off and help clog the passing lane. This means Cliff (or whoever) cannot get the ball in a great position to score. It also means teams aren't closing out hard at the three point line, which means we can't get any dribble penetration to force the defense into a scramble and create an open look.

To be successful shooting. Must utilize triple threat
1) look shot 1st. If your not ready to shoot you just dropped your success rate at leas 50-60%
2) dribble penetrate
3) pass
If you just look pass your not ready to shoot and will fail. You dont have to shoot every time obviously but your 1st thought should be shot shot shot.

Rare or plentiful, easy or hard, Rutgers' ranking in three point shooting percentage over the last three years is 302nd, 286th, and 329th. Hundreds of NCAA teams have been doing it better every year.
Perspective might be a useful tool.
- Seton Hall did not make the tourney last year - but made the prior 4 tourneys in a row (there was no tourney in 2019/20) - Willard has a history to draw on as well as more recent examples of NBA entry directly from SHU.
- Until the past 2 years - Rutgers has sucked for Decades.
- There was no tourney in 2019/20 so you really can't count that as a tourney year for RU regardless of how they played
- Part of the allure of RU is the RAC. There were no fans at the RAC last year in our first Tourney year in decades
- Pike runs a defensive focused scrappy style - you may not like it, but it has elevated the program significantly over a period of his first 4 years to a contending level that is higher than it has been in ~40 years and 7 previous head coaches.

Rutgers HAS sucked, I get that. My issue is, we’ve done better every year since Pike has gotten here, and for whatever reason he hasn’t really put together a full class since the Harper class. That’s an issue. Landing Cliff, Jones, and PM was great, but he needs to get a complete class

Tourney or no tourney, the point remains that we had a great season. The 2022 early signing period should have been better with the momentum we had the last two seasons.
You are right about Pike’s style elevating the program. My concern is at what point do players shy away from that. Let’s face it, guys want to score. And I know the defensive style worked for Virginia, but they also had shooters. I guess I’m just frustrated and overreacting to trailing at the half for the first three games against mediocre teas. Pike even said this was his best team. Do I believe him? No, but I trust him. He’s done a lot here in 5+ years. We’ve seen what he can do with talent. I’m just very concerned about bringing more talent in
Jones has so far shown an ability to shoot, in limited minutes. He's 7/11 FG (.636) through 3 games and 3/4 at the FT line. That's a tiny tiny sample size, and he needs to work on the rest of his game (especially defense), but he could grow into a scoring threat.
Ohearn shot 32.9% from 3 last year......he hit 4 of 9 from 3 yesterday.....a normal game, he his 3 of 9 for 33.3%......no one heard of Dylan OHearn before yesterday, suddenly he's a good shooter and we have none.
Keep in mind, NJIT is playing in a substantially weaker league and still shot 32.9% last year.....so we are saying he would shoot a higher percentage against 22 B1G opponents??

It's funny, the other day someone compared our team to a High School girls team, and I thought to myself, that the girls are probably better shooters.
I can agree on Jones. He's a "wait and see." Hyatt, on the other hand, is in his third year of college ball and has a career 25% three-point shooting percentage.
True. That's why Hyatt is here. He can jump out of the gym, rebound and block shots.
He will be allowed to improve offensively over time
