We can’t get any top recruits or transfers?

Can we just be over this failed experiment and save some wasted NIL money and go after a big name next year and pick from the crop?

What happened now? Did Dialo, Wright, and Stokes commit elsewhere? Has the portal been depleted already? I didn't think so.
Plenty of time to hold your breath and kick your feet. Just relax until the bad thing happens.

I'm not going to panic about not getting commitments yet, strictly because the portal didn't technically open until 5 days ago. However, in no way am I saying that I trust Pope to build a national championship contender. At this point I have come to accept the fact that being amongst the best is not expected of this program. If it was, Mark Pope would not be the coach.

Help me out here.
What's worse? Crying over the state of the program? Or crying over every poster that isn't in the rah rah club?

I think maybe the bigger problem is that there isn’t really enough top tier talent in the portal to fix this mess. Like we need at least two guys as good as Oweh and one of them really needs to be better. Who are they? Kansas, UNC, Duke, Michigan- everybody needs studs and a new roster so the ones that exist are gonna be tough to land. Just don’t see it working outside of a miracle, and considering we have a heretic with bizarre beliefs in charge of our program I have a hard time seeing miracles pour down on us 😅😅

I’m genuinely curious, how do you guys think the end will play out with pope?
I understand no one walks away from that kind of money, but he will has personal relationships on the line if he strong arms UK for every cent he’s owed. He’s talked about the name on the front of the jersey until it almost seems like a liability, so there is some inconsistency there if he’s sticking it out for ego or personal gain at the expense of the program. I’m sure his brothers on the 96 team would prefer, when the time comes, to have the biggest war chest possible to fix the mess their teammate left.

So what do you think? Does he leave honorably and fall on the sword? Or is it a toxic mess that costs him lifelong relationships? Hard to see it being somewhere in between.

I don't see him dying on his sword. That's too much money to pass up and I don't blame him. Plus, he knows that this will be the best job that he can ever get.

The 1996 players are lifelong friends. I bet Matt Doherty is still great friends with his Carolina guys. They want their friend to succeed at the job probably just as much as they want the program to succeed. In fact, if he is let go I bet there will be several on that team that will have animosity towards the program.

All in all, this is EXACTLY why you don't hire guys strictly because of nostalgia and/or connections to the program. 100% of the time it ends with an icky breakup
Why are you so focused on him leaving?
I'm assuming the OP wants the program to return to being elite and not a laughing stock. Mark Pope has never shown to be an elite coach or good at anything to give us any hope.

At the rate recruiting is going in the transfer portal.. its about to get real bad unless he really lands a few big names. And im starting to wonder if the recruits that do want to come here, arent holding off because THEY arent even sure if there will be a team on the floor that can compete.

Where we currently stand, I could see us being firmly out of the tournament by Feb 1st, 12-13 losses by then. Whats the highest defcon level? Thats where we are.

How can you form an opinion either way from where we currently stand??? What was factored into your thinking of 12-13 losses??? 😂

I dont see us landing more than maybe 1-2 guys that we want (like an Oweh or Butler type) and then a roster of largely no bodies. Its gonna be a worse version of last year and last year was a worse version of Pope's year.

I find it odd how so many people have trouble projecting for next year, even if its just a prediction that can be changed when new info is presented in the next few weeks. Transfer portal is starting to dwindle. Many team have already made their big "catch".

If YOU had to bet, right now, how many losses Kentucky will have next year, based on the info now.. youre betting we have a tournament team? Because im not. And I would bet if Vegas would put out numbers for something like this, they'd probably agree.

If Coach Pope fails, he is not wrong to take what is owed to him by contract.
Did JQ or Lowe return any money back since they did not play up to their potential?
Not saying he’s wrong. It does suggest all the talk of the name on the front of the jersey was just that. Are we just chasing checks or do we want people who want to be here because they know how special it is? Mark Pope is the one who has said this is the approach(ad nauseam), not me. If that’s his approach and he sticks UK for every penny he’s owed, then I think I can understand why recruits aren’t buying his pitch.

He has more than enough money to go take another job like tubby did and maintain his relationships with people and place.

Mediocre recruiting haul, mediocre season, termination. Would be shocked by anything different at this point. I’m afraid Pope is in total denial about his inability to fix this trainwreck. Get Stokes and I may begin to have a faint hope. Otherwise, the talent disparity between us and the leading programs right now is shameful and disgraceful.

It will end like every other job. He gets paid what he is owed or they come to an agreement on a separation package. He goes into assistant work or another small head coaching role at a small school to try and work his way back up.
This!
Has offset language in buyout so will take a favorable UK settlement and go coach a lesser program if I had to guess.

Also give this thread a week to see how the portal has unfolded lol

If Pope had even an ounce of respect for the program going forward, he takes a very pro-school buy out. Hes been so bad that I almost wonder if he should have turned the job down from the start. Its looking like hes gonna set us back in a big way... imo he should take what hes made so far and nothing more.

If he wants to bleed us dry for every nickle, then his entire legacy should take a hit. As far as im concerned, hes already nuked most of his legacy anyways. 7ppg as a backup on a title team isnt gonna be worth these 3 seasons.

Stokes and Wright, and the Saint Mary’s or Syracuse forward type talents. I’d be hopeful with that. I really wanted Hill from VCU. Love his game.
