Can anyone explain why Kyle Monangai doesn't fumble?

Kyle Monangai has zero career fumbles in his combined college and early NFL career.
  • College (Rutgers): Over 660 carries with zero fumbles.
  • NFL (Chicago Bears): Continues the streak with 0 fumbles.
  • Total Touches: Over 800 total touches (carries + receptions) without a fumble across college and pro levels.

He holds on tight.
Based on the way we've seen him blow up defensive players when blocking, he's clearly a very strong guy. I guess that strength is unusual for the position and does indeed allow him to hold on tighter. But if anyone has a better answer, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

This ****** platform won’t let me paste in the link to, or quote from, an article I found but the answer is that Kyle works hard on his grip strength and technique. He said it was no accident that he didn’t fumble in college.

Good stuff. I remember when my brother wrestled in high school, he would use these to improve grip strength.

Here's the article:

Kyle Monangai Has Overlooked Advantage

Let's see if that posts. The problem seems to lie with the site you're linking from, I've noticed it won't let me copy any content, i.e., even article titles.

He understands what will keep him in the league. It's the job.

High and tight. It how Tom Coughlin taught Tiki Barber how to hold the ball after having fumbling issues early in his career. He has one hand on top of one end of the ball which is tight against his chest with the other end of ball protected by his forearm and elbow.
He doesn't do that Schiano type of ball carrying anymore though. They coached that right out of him.

Indeed high and tight like Tiki. Kyle is also 5' 8" and runs low and compact - bigger defenders cant get under him. He also doesn't flail limbs around. Rice was similar.

Maybe it didn't get coached out of him.
I've watched him play multiple times with the Bears. He no longer carries the ball tucked up against his shoulder in that exxagarated fashion like all of the skill position players at RU do. Pacheco certainly doesn't either.

I’m failing to see the point you’re trying to make or is it just an observation?

I will also say when in the scrum, being tackled or about to be he immediately goes to two hands on the ball. A lot of fumbles are caused while guys continue to fight for more yards but forget the most important thing, two hands on the ball. It's usually not the guy they see, but the second one they don't that gets them.

I may be mistaken but I believe Pacheco never fumbled at Rutgers either (almost 600 carries in 4 years). If true, that would seem to point to good coaching on how to secure the ball.

I think most are caused by the coached punchout technique from either the side are coming up from behind. That's what has befallen Derrick Henry all season. He is especially vulnerable to it because he is always looking for the stiff arm when running towards the sideline and thus never switches the ball to that outside arm.

The only point is that he no longer carries the ball as he did at RU and still doesn't fumble. Nothing more complicated than that.
And on the flip side, Pacheco who reportedly didn’t fumble at Rutgers also changed the way he carries the ball and has at least 5 fumbles in the NFL. Maybe the Chiefs should send him back to New Brunswick for a refresher course on what previously worked for him.

Nobody in the NFL is going to coach their ballcarriers to hold the ball like that. Maybe cradle it baby style as they're heading into the gauntlet but that's about it. It slows you down due to the decreased arm swing.
