Free Athlon article on center Cam Jurgens at the link.

"What we know about Jurgens is that he's a fantastic athlete and has amazing potential. However, he's very much a work in progress and a rather significant unknown quantity. Nebraska gets some wiggle room to see if he'll be a good fit, but if not, a replacement must be named immediately."

Frost said on BIG RED blitz that there is competition at center. I think that is a good thing

Yeah our Center/Guard positions really need to step up.
I would expect a lot of play design with roll outs etc. to help minimize pressure up the middle, but the OL also needs to be capable of lining up and moving the LOS forward.
We’ll see what happens, it really is critical.
I suppose Hunter Miller is a real wild card since he was injured in the spring.
I suppose it’s also worth noting Frost basically called out WR as the group he seemed most concerned with on offense.

I love Cam’s potential at center. I could see him as a 2nd day draft pick down the road. He’ll be smaller in his first year or two. Playing with leverage will be critical. He’ll need help this year if a good, nose tackle lines up over him. But how often will that be?

He’ll be very athletic for a lineman. I think the staff needs to just play him. Stick with him through his early struggles and then they could have a Garrett Bradbury type player down the road.

Which us why we picked up a veteran grad transfer at WR..

What is the name of the guy coming from IWCC who is like, the best offensive lineman in JUCO in the country? He's a walk-on. Wegener? Is that his name? I say give that guy a serious look as well.

i've found the talk on this kid interesting. Nebraska wanted a kid who they knew would never be a factor? Bold strategy Cotton.

I mean why would they turn him down if he wanted to walk on? Pretty sure if they thought he was an answer at any of the interior positions (G,C) they would've just offered him a scholly.

I believe it was Cornicator who offered the judgement that he wouldn't be a factor. Cornicator usually has good information, but who knows for sure if the kid will be a factor. It's the old free board take a shovel of dirt and make it a mountain and then nobody remembers where the shovel of dirt came from in the first place.

He center isn't someone you can hide or work around. They generally make the blocking calls and everything starts with the center. If teams find he cannot consistently handle a nose right over him or in the 1 hole, you can bet they will keep hammering that weakness. The center, if uncovered, also picks up blitzes if they are free, and if they are zone blocking he has to pick up the twists and stunts.

Don't underestimate the challenges of being a good center. You can bet his head will be spinning as teams pick on.him until he proves it is a waste of time.

Cornicator, as well as other reputable posters on other forums. Even the casual fan should know that putting stock into that JCgridiron ranking might not be a good idea. I really doubt that the #1 JC center would not get a scholarship offer from anyone.

I don't really follow recruiting closely, especially jucos, so I have no idea if JCGridiron is worthwhile or not. Just answering loper's question.

Broke his foot last season and wasn’t going to be able to go through spring ball. That hurt his stock plus he’s on the small side.

He’ll be coming in this summer and it’s very hard for anyone to play first year on the O line even in the years where our line was subpar.

How can you be a juco all-American and not be a factor?

There are NAIA and D2 signees who were JUCO all Americans.

Wegener's only scholarship offers were D2 programs. The primary reason is he's really only about 5'11 275.

Will this story mirror a former OL teammate of DC Erik Chinander, when he was at the University of Iowa?

From former TE to future all-American center and NFL #2 round draft pick in 2003. There were some lean years, before success.
