I'll add that this particular family member also believes that K is a saint.. If that says anything about him.

Ask the relative when the next time K will be sick which player will not be playing the way he should be.

There isn't "caught red handed" proof, such as a video tape or an admission of guilt by anyone, but to say that the NCAA had zero or that there isn't any proof at all is not true either.

The circumstances are very shady. He failed the test 3 times in Chicago so he goes to take it in Detroit where he finally passes. When asked about his score, Rose was not able to recall what it was. During the investigation, Rose did not cooperate. They brought in a handwriting expert to examine the test compared to Rose's handwriting and the expert did not believe the two to be the same.

Additionally, the scores were invalidated, people were fired, and a major bball program had to vacate a 38 win season and championship game. That is a lot of consequences for an allegation that investigators felt there was no proof for. That is a lot of smoke for someone to pretend that there is no fire in sight.

And that's all rose related. Nothing to do with coach cal.

The other day, I got into a bit of a heated argument with a family member about John Calipari. I, of course, argued that he is a fantastic coach who puts his players first and has catapulted Kentucky to the top of college basketball. He continuously brought up UMass and Memphis. If I am being honest, I don't know the full situations and would love if someone can explain it to me so that I can try to reason with him. I understand that at Memphis, someone else took Derrick Rose's SAT. I have tried googling it, but it is difficult to get an article that is not completely biased against Calipari. I would love to know how you all defend it when you get in these situations.

With the Rose situation, the NCAA believes someone took his SAT for him. However, it was well before he arrived at Memphis and the NCAA Clearinghouse cleared Rose to play. So, how was Cal to have any idea of it? The NCAA CLEARED him to play at Memphis. That's all any coach in America would need to play any player. It occurred well before Rose even stepped foot on campus and Calipari had no idea.
At UMass, Camby took impermissible benefits. Has happened to every single coach in history probably. Coaches usually are not aware, although some are I'm sure. Who knows.

You would have to be living off the grid to at least not be somewhat knowledgeable about this topic . This has been discussed countless times on here and in sports media everywhere . A simple google search for several topics will get you a plethora of articles . Search 2008 Memphis vacated or any variant of that . Also derrick rose sat will net results , most are wildly biased but it's too easy to find the subject matter .

Yet UNC is billowing mushroom clouds and the NCAA can't seem to pin down any violations . How about Duke having Maggette despite taking money or Thomas not explaining his jewelry and yet it disappears as far as the NCAA is concerned .

The point is that smoke has nothing to do with anything , the NCAA goes after schools when they want and completely ignores other schools . So the fact that they crushed Memphis doesn't mean anything .

Let's not forget the NCAA had to drop a case against Miami due to improper behavior of their own , don't forget Shabazz Muhammad getting off because the investigator duscussed his case with a boyfriend and said he was guilty and she just had to find a way to prove it .

Never mind that it was admitted by former NCAA investigators that Emmert formed a special unit to target certain schools . Getting punished by the NCAA doesn't even imply guilt , not being held responsible by the NCAA doesn't imply innocence either .

Short answer: Cal did nothing wrong in either case and has never been cited by the NCAA for any wrongdoing.

Smoke has nothing to do with anything? It has everything to do with this. In the anology, smoke=evidence. There is a lot of evidence that shows Rose is guilty. There is a lot of evidence that shows those other cases you mentioned involve guilt by those programs/players as well.

The NCAA playing favorites with Duke and North Carolina by not punishing them does not mean that the consequences thrown at Memphis weren't an indication of anything. It is true, as you said, that the NCAA goes after who they want to go after. But it is also true that the evidence they used to hammer Memphis was legit. Them not taking action in other cases where there is also legit evidence (Duke, NC) does not change that fact.

Who has gotten punished by the NCAA that wasn't guilty? Pearl? Bohiem? Larry Brown? The fat dude that use to coach Tennessee? Pitino?

Cal guilty by association for what Camby himself did , yes
Cal guilty by association for what Rose homself may or may not have done , yes
Coach K guilty by association for what Maggette himself did , no
Coach K guilty by association for what Thomas himself did , no
Roy Williams guilty by association for what UNC did while he was an assistant and head coach , no

I don't know how some people could arrive to this conclusion but they amazingly do

There's not enough evidence to have went after Memphis like they did if there wasn't enough to go after the schools I listed . Hand writing experts get it wrong , they are not above reproach . Besides we have witnessed the NCAA play dirty when targeting schools , that's why I listed the Miami case as they got busted doing so and had to let the Canes go .

Given that and their inability to find wrongdoing when it's obvious depending on who it is , I think it's not far at all to see the NCAA doing whatever it took to nail Memphis . But if you want to buy their smoke then go right ahead , it's just a load of what ifs and bs .

In reality the NCAA only took Memphis wins because the test score was invalidated by the testing agency . There's smoke in Roses favor on that as well , they sent a letter to Rose and invalidated the test score due to a no response but they sent it to an old address . There's no proof at all that Rose didn't take the test , just assumptions . Smoke doesn't equate to fire otherwise it would all be called fire .

Who? Cal, twice. You really like circumstantial evidence so I'd add collateral damage to those who got punished. The wins were stripped from his personal record, yet he has never been accused of a violation by the NCAA. Your turn.

There is enough evidence to go after the schools listed. That's where the outrage comes from. They will go after some schools who have players or coaches who cheated in some way based on evidence, like Rose, but they will ignore others like Duke and Carolina. You seem to think favortism being shown towards some means that the ones who don't recieve the special treatment must be innocent. That's not true.

Yes, the NCAA had to let the canes go because they botched that situation. But Miami was not innocent. Miami, of all schools, is not freaking innocent. My point is that those who have been hammered by the NCAA have been hammered because of evidence. You have not made a solid argument against that point.

Buy the NCAAs smoke? No, most of the evidence comes from Rose himself. Not all of the consequences from this situation came from Rose. There are journalist who are just a skeptical about the NCAA as you are who wrote about this back when it happened and came to the same conclusion at this fool is guilty. I don't know what your motivation is in arguing that there isn't enough evidenced. If Rose would have gone to Duke or Carolina and Rose did the exact same thing, but without NCAA punishment, I bet you wouldn't be up here talking about " not enough evidence".

The program was guilty of playing an ineligible player. It's not Cal's fault that Rose is a dbag who was too dumb to pass a test so he cheated. But that ineligible player was involved in those wins so they vacated. You can argue that the punishment wasn't fair to Cal, but the point being made was the NCAA punishes when there is guilt (if you're not Duke or Carolina), which there was in this situation.

There wasn't enough evidence hence them using the invalidated score which was flimsy at best . I don't have to prove Rose was innocent but they didn't prove he cheated either , there is no hard proof but guilty by default because he didn't talk to them .

You can suck the NCAA slonge all day as you typically do on here . The only time you show up is to argue generally about Cal or UK , always against them and never for . Leads me to think you aren't a UK fan at all but just bandwagon the school to argue . There's no hard proof Rose cheated , there's no hard evidence . They targeted them for flimsy reasons and used to testing agency to get them . Memphis did nothing wrong but paid the price , Cal did nothing wrong either .

Rose , who knows as there isn't any proof he did but to think they are guilty because they got vacated is wildly naive. What if UNC gets off without penalty , does that mean they did nothing wrong because your line of thinking is if you get penalties then you did it so you must be innocent if there's no penalties .

Considered putting you on ignore in the past , no use for your nonsense anymore

And by the way since you couldn't figure it out , the UNC and Duke no crime situations don't negate memphis . The point was that you can't trust the NCAA at all like you are all in on , the other examples go to the NCAAs integrity as well but by all means ignore that and trust their judgement/intentions.

He needed the score to be eligible, which is why he cheated the 4th time in Detroit after failing the first 3 times in Chicago, so when it was invalidated he was ineligible. You don't have to prove that Rose wasnt cheating? That's fair! But similarly, I don't really have to prove that he cheated( although he CLEARLY CHEATED). It is a fact that Memphis played an ineligible player because the score was invalidated. That ain't "smoke", that's a "fire" and the stated reason why Memphis got hammered.

How am I sucking NCAA's slong? I said that they give special treatment to Duke and Carolina? That's sucking them off? You must not know my post history. Most of my conflicts with people on here had nothing to do with Cal or UK. Lately my post have been about the BS surrounding Duke. In this thread, I am not bashing Cal, I am bashing Rose. Did you not read my first post?

Memphis and Cal did nothing wrong ON PURPOSE, but Rose was ineligible. Not because Cal is a scumbag, but because Rose is.

Yes, my line of thinking is that the NCAA does give out penalties when a program has done something wrong. But that in no way means the opposite is true. That's not how favortism works.

But you got to admit that the NCAA is very inconsistent, to the the absolute very least, when it comes to handing out punishment. It's really hard telling how much evidence they had because of their inconsistencies. Sometimes they have a smoking gun (or a girl who says......"yes, I had sex with A, B, C, and D player AND got paid for it) and yet they do nothing. It's a really pathetic organization when it comes to policing the players and program. Pathetic!

In Rose's case the testing agency and the NCAA created the problem by clearing Rose before he ever arrived on campus. Then, on the basis of a hand writing "expert" they said he cheated post participation in playing.

Manufactured "smoke".

The way I have learned to deal with these people is to tell them... Yes, Cal cheats. He's so good at it that he gets a pass from the NCAA. Besides, Kentucky is the center of college basketball, so therefore cheating is allowed here. We have the most money therefore we get the best players every year.

So again, no proof. You can argue circumstances all you want, but in a court case, the ncaa would have lost. This, and its double standards on different schools, are some of the reasons people predict the ncaa will cease to exist.

I think the clearest example of the bias that the NCAA has for certain schools is how differently they treated Duke in the case of Corey Maggette. Maggette admitted to taking $2000 from his summer league coach before he enrolled at Duke. Admitted it!! This means he was ineligible to play at Duke and they should have had to forfeit any game he played in. But the NCAA ruled that since Duke did not know about it, they would not punish them. Derrick Rose is alleged to have cheated on his SATs and Memphis had to forfeit all the games he played in. Both players did things before enrolling at their school to make them ineligible, but the NCAA treated them very differently.
