The other day, I got into a bit of a heated argument with a family member about John Calipari. I, of course, argued that he is a fantastic coach who puts his players first and has catapulted Kentucky to the top of college basketball. He continuously brought up UMass and Memphis. If I am being honest, I don't know the full situations and would love if someone can explain it to me so that I can try to reason with him. I understand that at Memphis, someone else took Derrick Rose's SAT. I have tried googling it, but it is difficult to get an article that is not completely biased against Calipari. I would love to know how you all defend it when you get in these situations.

Do you really think that after researching the Umass and UM stuff you'll be able to craft an argument that would change their mind? Sounds like a waist of time. Just tell'em to shut the hell up.

the letters that the NCAA sent to both schools are pretty black and white
there is a reason the crying haters will not read those letters

People are just pissed that they don't have them. You really think that any of our rivals wouldn't take cal in a second if they could?

Pretty simple. NCAA Clearinghouse cleared Rose twice. Not a coach in America that wouldn't have played him.

As for Camby, Cal self reported the violation. Cal didn't give Camby a thing. Ask your family member about Lance Thomas, Cory Megette and others at Duke if he thinks K is so clean and Cal is a scumbag.

Don't forget about the "indefinite" suspension Coach K handed Jack Tripper after his 3rd tripping incident.

Has anyone ever heard of anything else at UMass other than Camby? Reason I ask, I recently met a UMass grad who was still angry with Cal stating he got UMass in trouble. I assumed over the Camby thing but she admitted Cal wasn't really responsible for that. We were at work and she is a nurse, so we couldn't discuss further.

If the people in power who handed out the punishments for these coaches did so fair and balanced, then you could have a conversation about Cal and what he has done or has been accused of doing.
The NCAA cleared Rose. End of story.
Camby hired an agent without Cal knowing; Cal reported it. End of story.
The powers at the NCAA however looked differently at this. Without admitting their guilt in clearing Rose, they blamed Cal and punished him.
The powers at the NCAA punished Cal for self reporting what Camby did.
Now, looking at some other situations where the powers at the NCAA turned their heads:
Cheating at UNC
***** house and sex for hire at UL
Duke, well, not sure where to start; start with their team jeweler
Kansas
Now schools like Notre Dame get hammered for doing some of the same **** these others do; USC gets hammered while right up the road at UCLA it is hands off.

Its just hard to have a conversation about coaches cheating and the NCAA when the head of the organization, in this case, the NCAA is corrupt.

Cal may be one of three coaches that EVERY program would take IMMEDIATELY if the coaching spot was open and the fans would salivate over the hire

Then why is Canby in the UMass HOF.?

I don't know anything about the Camby situation, but I do know that Derrick Rose is a bad guy and Cal had to take the fall for it. People treated Rose like a saint when he came to the league and treated Cal like a cheater for WHAT ROSE DID. This guy cheated on his SAT by having someone else take it. Somehow he got cleared to play which is why Cal played him. Later when the truth came out, Cal and Memphis got all the blame and Rose, who would go on to run a train on a chick with his bros (which the woman claims she was raped), got to go to the NBA with his reputation intact.

She's a moron. Camby screwed up. Cal did the right thing.

And I love when people say "Cal bolted when he thought there might be trouble." Uh....he was at frickin Massachusetts and he got offered a job to run the Nets. What would you do?

If you want to find out about Cal before he came here I suggest you go to the Memphis and Umass board if you want all perspectives.

The last sentence is confusing. Nurses are limited to a certain number of words to people? The subject is off limits to nurses?

a basic understanding of the Camby situation leads one to understand Cal doesn't come out of that looking bad (in fact the NCAA enforcement director said he was an innocent bystander). The Rose situation is a little murkier, but one should remember it didn't happen "at Memphis" as the OP said, but rather while Rose was still at Simeon (?) and not committed to any school yet. Maybe Cal did arrange the whole thing, but it's far fetched. A more credible guess is maybe he heard what happened on the SAT and turned a blind eye. And I thought the NCAA cleared Rose 3 times (not 2 as someone posted).

But it's not those details that make people say bad things about Cal. Rather, it's the sense he left town just ahead of the police, that whether he's culpable or not the honorable thing to do is stay thru the bad times. Read a story just yesterday about the 30 for 30 on Cal, and the writer made sure to point out that Cal left for the Nets the very week that Camby admitted to taking money.

I work with a woman who's a big college football fan, and tho she has no feelings about USC one way or another, she doesn't like Pete Carroll, only because he left town ahead of the trouble that resulted from happenings on his watch. Lot of people think that way.......

Your proof for that is where? You have the same amount the ncaa has, as in zero.
Not disagreeing on your points that Cal caught the blame. I, like many, including you and the ncaa, assume he cheated, but that hasn't been proven. It's a justification for a legitimate lawsuit by Memphis.

Cal wanted the UK job when the drunkard was hired. The timings were coincidental. Plus, if he committed no wrong in either situation, despite your assertion of his turning a blind eye re: Rose, why would he stay at places that were going to be penalized, especially when substantially greater opportunities arose? Would you?

The Camby situation is pretty clear and easy. He took money from an agent.

The Rose situation is a little different as there are probably a handful of people that know what happened and none of them were talking. The only thing we know is Rose passed the standard test on his 4th try in a different city. We know he was given the green light to play based on the scored that were accumulated on the test. Just like the IRS with your taxes, the clearinghouse has the ability to question what was turned in at any point, which they did. After no cooperation from Rose, the scores were invalidated.

The only thing I have always questioned if is Rose had nothing to hide, defend your coach and university and cooperate with the investigation.

He's not mad at Cal for getting UMass in trouble. He's mad at Cal for going on to better things and leaving UMass to wallow in deserved sports mediocrity forever. He's also mad at the woman who left his controlling, unsuccessful, needle-dicked self for a better looking, more successful man. No doubt he calls her a slut and a *****.

Hopefully he doesn't work in the ER or ICU. Kids not to bright but the gal who left him must be.

My answer is always that Calipari is Kentucky's coach, I don't care what happens at Memphis or UMass - he's been here 8 years without one issue.

I don't defend it. In fact, I pile on even more crap. Then, at the end, I say, "All I care about is winning -- no matter the consequences -- so I'm just gonna enjoy the ride as long as I can."

You are right and it's a crock of sh*t Memphis got burned on it. What the hell were they supposed to do? It's all on Rose (a guy I would have never trusted...a shady guy).

One of the best things, and different, with Cal being here is the high caliber guys he's brought in. Can't be a coincidence...gotta give Cal props

How about you focus on Cal the man and not Cal the coach?

What do we know about Cal the man? Well, he's a great Dad, with happy and successful kids who seem to love him. He's a great husband who seems to have a loving relationship with his wife. He's a great son. He's a great and incredibly loyal friend, and almost all of his many former players seem to love him.

He has emphasized teaching character and charity to his players since coming to Kentucky. He himself has done an incredible job of giving back to the community and raising money for charitable causes.

Considering all that, arguing over whether or not he knew Derrick Rose cheated on his ACT seems pretty pointless.

Cal was the one who turned Camby in at UMass.

The Rose thing happened on Rose's end and the NCAA cleared him ... twice.

Cal has letters exonerating him in both cases, but why let facts get in the way of confirmation biases?

Tell this this: Cal has never been convicted of a single NCAA violation. Zero. Nada. Enough said.

There isn't "caught red handed" proof, such as a video tape or an admission of guilt by anyone, but to say that the NCAA had zero or that there isn't any proof at all is not true either.

The circumstances are very shady. He failed the test 3 times in Chicago so he goes to take it in Detroit where he finally passes. When asked about his score, Rose was not able to recall what it was. During the investigation, Rose did not cooperate. They brought in a handwriting expert to examine the test compared to Rose's handwriting and the expert did not believe the two to be the same.

Additionally, the scores were invalidated, people were fired, and a major bball program had to vacate a 38 win season and championship game. That is a lot of consequences for an allegation that investigators felt there was no proof for. That is a lot of smoke for someone to pretend that there is no fire in sight.
