So no credit for the changes he made in the 2nd half that won us the game?
Lol. Yes. Cal took credit for stopping all ball screens to stay away from the traps. Lol.
Not a single ball screen or any other screen in the second half.

Cal still doesn't have a clue how to attack a zone defense. We were pathetic against the trapping zone.

We won so I don’t really want to piss and moan……But….

How frustrating is it when we need a bucket in the half court offense and we do some dumb*** little dribble hand off out top for 20 seconds, and then just hope someone can make a crazy contested shot.

That’s our half court offense. Luckily TyTy actually made a couple of those crazy contested shots tonight.

I think Wheeler is trying to play too fast and that’s a result of Gooooooo!!! He’s dribbling straight into double teams, the sideline traps, leaving his feet with nowhere to throw the ball. All stupid rookie mistakes.
I hate that weave offense we run at half court. That is supposed to produce a mismatch but rarely accomplishes anything. I’d like to see us have a few defenses, some traps, a press other than just on inbounding the ball. And run some offense. Is that asking too much from the hall of famer?

It was definitely coach speak. But waiting until during a game to prepare your PG for a trapping defense........maybe not enough coach speak during practice???
Maybe, but Sunvold said they had worked on it during shootaround. Cal in post game said he thought Wheeler could handle the traps. Obviously he couldn't, at least tonight.

The announcers mentioned early in the game that UK was working on the double team off the ball screen during their walkthrough. I think Cal was covering for his guy a bit. Saying Cal was a bit slow making the adjustment to stop using the high ball screen is fair too though. We clearly knew it was coming. Ideally your PG doesn't freak out and try to dribble too much when the other team is trying to trap him but that didn't happen so we had to stop the high ball screen altogether. Damn nice win tonight! GBB

No changes?

He didn't break one of his long held rules to not play Tyty with 2 fouls late in the first to cut it 5???

He didn't change the offense to get away from the traps???

He didn't play Toppin over his starter Brooks for most of the second half?

He didn't change the offensive flow late in the second to focus more towards Mintz instead of Grady who was off?

He didn't have Tyty take over primary ball handling when Wheeler went of the rails? Also had them pass before crossing half court?

Didn't move the 4 spot from the spot up jumpers to the baselines for some open looks and dunks? May have been because Toppin was playing more instead of Brooks?

Cal doesn't make huge changes in a game, no coach does. But he makes subtle one likes the ones listed above that effect the outcomes of games and helped us win this one.

I am convinced some people just love to complain. We got mugged all night, best shooter was WAY off, PG lost his mind and still WON THE GAME!!!

If the cats were allowed to hack and hold like a&m, no team could beat them in the sec.

He also said he was trying to explain to Sahvir what to do against their pressure but wasn't able to get it across. Maybe coach speak to cover for his player?
Not sure. Whatever Wheeler was attempting to do last night, he did a piss poor job of it. I would’ve thought a PG like him would’ve handled the pressure/traps much better. He looked like he had never seen one before. Just painful to watch.

Preach! Too many of our fans have a pre determined feel about Cal that they are not going to see anything he does as good. It amazes me!

While I agree with some of what you say, this was a substitution pattern made out of his own inability to stop the trap. Out of necessity. His biggest adaptation was sitting Brooks. Which should be initiated before tip off every game.

What were those changes? Finally benched Brooks, went with TyTy at the point until Grady got hurt. Not being a jerk I’m serious, what else?
Them Jacking bricks from 3 helped a lot.
Well if you really want to hear another perspective

- We stopped the high pick as they were blitzed it all night to force TOs
- Our defense had a lot to do with Aggie’s bricks did it not? We took their straight line drives away with good on ball D and sagged back to force the pass for some contested threes. (that is part Of coaching….go watch a Memphis game if you disagree)
- We went to an offensive concept…to space out the floor vs ball screen and TyTy hit some pull-ups down the stretch
- we also got to the FT line with ball drives down the stretch

I mean we only scored 64 …so nobody was going to stand out on offense. But we held them to 58 which’ is close to 20 Pts below their average

I’m tickled to death we won. But I’m not happy with how we played, it was awful. And I know that if we play this way at Auburn we will know what TN and UNC felt like when we thumped them.
I also wasn’t ready to declare us a final four team after the TN game, because I’m not convinced that’s who we are. Grady seems to either be on fire or laying bricks. I’m afraid this is something we will see over and over, I hope not.
We played a bunch of nobody’s early, and struggled. Then we lose to ND, and then LSU in a game that reminded me of last night. The difference was TyTy wasn’t physically able to bail us by. Then the other side of the coin is we looked great against Tn, UNC, and Ga.

So who are we? I don’t know yet. But it’s crazy to think after last nights game people should or would just be happy we won and say on to the next one. I sure hope Cal and the team don’t feel that way.
Or maybe they’ll just blame all of the stupid turnovers and bad play on the refs and move on to the next one.
