Donovan had just had two mediocre seasons. A lot of people were saying he got lucky with his championships or was starting to decline. Calipari had four years in a row with over 30 wins, a 1 or 2 seed, and pretty solid tournament performance (despite no championship). It was also just the feeling. I can’t quantify it, but in my recollection, Call was absolutely a rockstar and the more exciting of the two. Call seemed like the future. Could definitely see the case for Donovan, though.

The revisionist history about pre-UK Cal started a few years ago. He was clearly one of the best coaches in the game when we hired him, was just getting started with one and done, and was turning Memphis in Point Guard U before he left to come here. Everything he accomplished here could have been done at Memphis.

Back then, Donovan was the white hat rockstar and Cal was the black hat rockstar. Donovan cane off the Pitino tree from player to head coach. Squeaky clean image.

Cal was the guy who won big in small conferences but couldn’t get a job in a big conference in part because of past indiscretions. Cal was the villain coach who won 30 games a year and UK is the villain school who was struggling to win 20 a year at the time, so it was a match made in heaven.

…Until it wasn’t.
