Georgia Tech only had 6 TO and they are fundamentally poor yet Cal plays his soft man to man, never pressures, never traps, never gets after the other team and cost his team around 20 points a game because UK gets literally no points off turnovers, or fast break transition points, GT got 33 points off TO

But he wants to play half court defense with shot blockers, instead he gets beat off dribble after needless switches and then defense is in wild scramble mode

The program has evolved into soft coaching, soft players and serves as a nothing more than a NBA factory

The BS about a players first program - here’s a novel idea Cal, how about a Winning first Program

Excellent point about style of play. Year after year, we get the most athletic and long players in the country. And like you said, we play a soft, relaxed man-to-man. And then offensively, we grind it down to a halt.

I honestly think just sticking four players on one side and isolating the other to go one-on-one would work better than this offense.

Good post

Good points made about the style of play. When Cal first got here, we were fast and getting out in transition. The stars shine in that kind of setting. Now, we play slow and rarely ever get out in transition. We’ve become a half court grind it out team. Same style as Tubby. It’s definitely not as fun to watch. Especially when your half court offense looks worse than a middle school team.

What's most disturbing is this is literally the most time he's ever had to work with any team he's had--no recruiting responsibilities due to Covid in terms of traveling all over. Said it when it happened and see others did as well--this program deeply misses Kenny Payne and I'll add DeWayne Peevy as well. I'm very high on addition of Jai Lucas, but I could care less about anyone else being replaced.

Exactly. Everyone has had the same circumstances with the pandemic and made the most of it . I don’t know what the hell was he doing over the summer

We can talk about a 17 point loss to a winless team if you want.

We can talk about a lousy coaching effort or about more turnovers than a bakery.

Plenty more than just those.

If you are talking to me. That first one should never happen at Kentucky. Neither should 34-pt losses to Duke.

I haven't said that coaching has been great this year. Im pretty sure Ive stated that the turnover number is embarrassing, unacceptable. Something along those lines. On other posts about bad basketball.

I haven't said one time that there aren't plenty of things that are unacceptable. Tonight Ive spent most of my time talking about this ridiculous interview topic. AN INTERVIEW!!!

Screaming a players is something coaches have done since the beginning of time. Our fans make no sense when they make an issue of this. These are 18 years olds, you have to scream at them to get their attention. I've coached guys that young before, you have to. trust me.

The issue with Cal is far greater than that.

Well man, I guess it's just another in a long line of crap people are sick of dealing with. Someone said in another thread even MJ is tired of it. If MJ is tired of his meal ticket, then come on man.

The way I look at it is this. You can dismiss everything you see and say it's just not a big deal. You can hold serve on this and go opposite the grain. The point is, it's not helping. It's making fans angrier and it's causing a rift between supporters of the program and Cal. That can leak down into serious people inside of the program. You don't want this kind of **** even if you want to deny the existence of an issue.

Cal needs to completely clean things up. He will need it if he goes to the NIT this year. And as a Cal fan, you should definitely want him to if he's going to have bad seasons coming up.

I disagree with the screaming piece. I always think that is overblown. That said, he has become soft. He’s become complacent. It’s easy to do when your hit the final four every couple years for a stretch, get a championship, etc. Only he can bring his mindset back to where it needs to be.

We never trap pnr and when we trap the post our guys kinda tiptoe into it. It is maddening that we don't really use athleticism to attack defensively.

I thought I was the only one . I was going back and forth with someone in the game thread about most coaches yell at players .

That’s the least of my worries right now .

All this being said - Softness is natural as you get older and Cal is now resting - improbable that winning means that much to him

I am a Cal supporter. But I am looooong done with hearing him scream, “RUUUNNNNN!!!” every single stinking time we get a rebound. More often than not there is nowhere to run. They have 3-4 defenders back and he is still screaming “RRUUUNNNN!!!”.

It is incredibly obvious the players are pressing, they are in their heads, they do not know what the hell Cal wants them to do. Screaming bloody murder might put you in the spotlight, but if your screaming is mindless drivel with zero substance it is beyond unnecessary.

We play our best basketball when Cal sits down and shuts the hell up. And, just to repeat, I do not want to run Cal out of town. I just want him to take an honest look at his approach and find a way to coach to these players strengths. Not this square peg round hole nonsense.

Seems like it’s the fans that are soft. Any sign of adversity and the doom and gloom crew comes crawling out from their holes.

Not sure I would say soft, hard headed, set in his ways, stubborn yes. Not flexible and willing to look at other methods to improve this team yes.

We have the perfect length, talent and amount of talent to put full court pressure on the other team, yet he never does it. pressure defense and cause some turnovers.

People are crying about Calipari taking 5 questions and doing 6 minutes of interviews. If he's soft then these people are made of soapstone.

Always loved the thought of boys calling players soft when they'd wet themselves if confronted by these "soft" kids.......parallels to the BLM hate noted. Btw how much must it suck to live a life where your self worth is tied to a team full of people you fear/hate.
