I’m just gonna put this out there ... why can’t Caleb fill Akwasi’s role next yr? ....

Can stretch the offense. Has a ton of length. Can defend 1-3/4(?). Has shown that he can clean the glass. Will prob be R best pure shooter next yr...

I know people may say it’s too big of a jump, but I’d say look at the age gap. I don’t think it’s so crazy to think that Caleb can make a huge jump next yr both in terms of development & size.

Anyway, that’s my hope...

See RHJ filling and excelling in this...reminds me of Desean Butler that Waters let get away and terrorized us for years at WVU, and led them to a Final 4...

That said, Caleb I agree will take big step forward next season and I'm excited to see what he can do next year...he is a key cog in the 8-9 man rotation we have...

Could fill parts but would need to get stronger to fill all. I like Caleb's mid range game better but thought AY was a better three point shooter. Have not looked at their stats to confirm this.

Caleb did have a few games where he had a lot of rebounds but definitely agree he will have to bulk up a bit and then can play that role although Harper is definitely going to be the starter at the 4 spot

I think if caleb can manage to gain 15-20 lbs of muscle I think it will make a world of difference for him. I'm sure he is working hard, sometimes these things take a couple years. Geo had a huge jump this year in strength. Hopefully it will kick in for Caleb this year.

I think the minutes are his to lose. He doesn’t need to transform into yeboah but just get better at playing his style. The team is going to be different next year, obviously. I think Caleb, Oskar and Mag will see minutes to fill in the minutes gap left behind by Yeboah. All 3 can contribute in different ways to help the team win.

Yeboah’s 3 point shooting is going to be a huge loss - we really need someone to step up or step in. I think Caleb has great upside (both him and Montez are the two who I think are most apt to take giant steps this year), and this role is here for him if he can step up - but of course that’s the million dollar question.

Caleb is a great rebounder due to his length, quickness and hops. Yeboah has grown man strength and was a better rebounder in traffic. Even.

Yeboah seemed better from 3. Caleb great mid range game. As long as we have others hitting 3’s this is okay. Down the stretch it was the 3 guys coming back hitting 3’s so I think we’ll be okay there plus one of the new guys coming in. Maybe Caleb and Mulcahey become serviceable from 3 which is enough.

Caleb had some great assists early on and when Geo went down. He hit a rough patch at the end. JY and Mulcahey had TO issues on and off as well but both finished strong. I’m not so worried he had a few tough games. We can say that about just about everyone out there. If they all do the little things on their off nights and don’t get too down they still help the team. I saw that mainly from Yeboah, Geo and RHJ last year. I expect it from everyone returning. The new guys will now learn from guys like Caleb.

i like the chemistry returning and let’s see what the new guys add.

I think Caleb definitely can fill the role. For whatever reason it seems as if he lost some of his confidence near the end of the season. He struggled hitting threes at the end of the season. At other times he seemed like our best three point shooter on the team. If Harper plays the 4 than who will be the 3 or small forward? I could see McConnell or Harper playing there as well or we could often play 3 guards with Young starting with Mathis and Baker or even Mulcahy as a third guard or at small forward for a while. These are nice problems to have and at least I know Pikiell and his staff will figure everything out. It is nice to have depth which for many years we did not have.

I've said all along Caleb's issue is just confidence. I think an underrated part of Caleb's struggles last year were due to changes in roles. Beginning of the year he is starting at the wing. Then to the bench for Yeboah. Then Geo goes down and he does a great job stepping in as PG for weeks. Then Geo is back and Young and mulcahy playing more so back to wing. Lots of changing positions and roles for someone who has had confidence issues isnt ideal. It all seemed to go downhill after that one game were he had a stretch of bad plays at the end of the game right before Geo's return. Confidence

If Caleb or possibly Reiber can fill in at the 4-spot, we’ll have a legit two-deep at every position.

At times if we play big and go with Myles and Cliff up front, along with Ron at the 3, Tez at the 2 and Geo at point, we’ll have a ridiculous defense that can also score inside and out.

And we’d still have a bench of JY, Caleb, Paul, Duke, Oskar, Mag and Reiber, assuming no redshirts or transfers. Crazy depth.

One of Yeboah’s greatest strengths was his mental makeup. Never got rattled emotionally and always maintained a calmness about him. Never got too high or too low. If Caleb can improve on this, it will serve himself and the team well.

Also, I think Jacob Young is too good to be on the bench for every game and will fight for starter’s minutes.

Yeboah: 6-6/230
McConnell: 6-7/190

McConnell definitely needs to bulk up if he's going to play the 3... if he could get up to 205 or so, that'd be a much better size to bang against other SFs.

As far as rebounding, he's already one of the better rebounders on the team - and best among our guards. On a per 40 min basis this season:
13.4 - Johnson
8.2 - Harper
8.2 - Carter
8.1 - Yeboah
7.0 - McConnell
6.1 - Mathis
5.5 - Mulcahy
5.0 - Young
4.2 - Baker

Caleb is listed on the roster at 6'7 190 lbs.
All 4 of our incoming recruits are listed taller and heavier,
I see Caleb at the 2/3 with RHJ at the 4 backed up by freshman.

He needs to put on weight. Not a lot of lineups where McConnell doesn't fall out as the third guard/wing. Which generally would mean he'd be guarding the opposing SF.

The way I see it:
1 - Baker, Young, Mulcahy, McConnell
2 - Mathis, Young, Baker, McConnell
3 - McConnell, Harper, Mag, Mulcahy, Palmquist, Mathis
4 - Harper, Palmquist, Reiber, Omoruyi
5 - Johnson, Omoruyi, Reiber, Doucoure

McConnell is more like the 3rd/4th option at PG/SG, whereas he'd be the starter at WF/SF. If Harper starts at the 4, and McConnell doesn't start at the 3..... who are we starting at the 3? Mag?

I pretty much agree with you on all this. The only thing is that you have 11 guys listed. I think Reiber will redshirt. We only had two backups this year at the 5, with Duke hardly getting any playing time. With all of the other positions, we have so much versatility that the minutes will be evenly divided, imo, with a variety of lineups (4 guards, 2 bigs, and so on).

I have 12 listed. 4 at PG, 1 more at SG, 3 more at SF, 2 more at PF, and 2 more at C.

Remains to be seen if there are redshirts or not. There will need to be a 3rd center for foul trouble minutes - not necessarily playing in every game, but certainly in those games where Johnson/Omoruyi need to be saved for the end of the game. Whether that's Reiber or Doucoure, I don't know. It's also possible that Reiber/Palmquist are strong enough to take on the PF spot alongside Harper at the 3.

A lot of McConnell´s success came when he was on the ball.

With confidence, and knowing how to play in space, McConnell´s upside is as good as anyone´s in Piscataway.

CM seems like a good kid as well.

Let´s go,#22. YouR time!
