Honestly i could see a Jacob Young scenario with Caleb unfortunately. But different in that it would be cause he sees a team that wont be nearly as good

I don’t think he would do that to Pike
And if he transferred he would be showing an incredible amount of ingratitude to Pike
Period end of story.

Agreed. His situation is nothing like Young’s. He’s part of the original group. Culture Changer. Not a kid transferring for academics either. If he plays college ball next year it will be at RU.

The question will be - what feedback will he get when testing the waters. Now is not his time to go for it at the NBA level. To really get looks he’d have to work on getting his soft shot back (uncontested). The one from frosh year - pre strength and conditioning. When you go off to play in Europe, your accepting that as your professional destination. Maybe he decides to do that and he’s good enough to make a decent check abroad. But when you start winning awards like DPOY, the NBA dream becomes less of a pipe fantasy. College is where you showcase your game to put yourself in the best position to prove yourself. His strengths aren’t really conducive to working his way up in G league from ground zero. He would really needs to get noticed and sought out. All depends what he wants and what scouts tell him about what he’s need to do.

IMO he's earned the right to do whatever he'd like wirh his 5th year. The deal with him was always to come to Rutgers and give a great effort for four years. He's done that. And with his guys Geo and Ron moving on I don't see any moral obligation on his part to stay. I could easily see him transferring to Dayton or FGCU or something (not sure where his family is these days) and playing at "home." Anyone who'd get mad at that is nuts.

I didn’t mean it that way - that fans should be pissed if he left. Most fans aren’t “mad” about MJ but no matter what it does change the legacy mark when you end your career somewhere else. He will not be viewed as a RU legend in the same light as the other guys for making that choice. No hard feelings - I just don’t see Caleb wanting to finish his college career somewhere else.

Caleb turns it up a notch when the lights get bright. He was the hero vs Clemson too. Hope he comes back.

Hope he comes back but feels unlikely
Caleb should come back and demonstrate the offensive punch he can deliver to an NBA team.

I watched Eddie Jordan earn his way on the NJ Nets team with his blue-collar effort to make other players around him better. Caleb McConnell has those same qualities.

I was thinking the same thing. He could be the man next year. And THAT was an amazing stat line for the DPOY and I also do not understand not working him into the end game vs. the same ol same ol . Pike has terribly little offensive creativity.

I want Caleb to come back too but I think he has a role in the NBA. If he stays another year and becomes the offensive player we saw last night, gets his 3PT percentage up to low 300s and keeps defending, he would be a first round pick like Matisse Thybulle was in 2019 but even taller.

Problem is that some agents will sell him that dream right now.

Does it make sense to play in Europe if you have a year eligibility anymore with NIL? If you get paid $50,000 to have to live in Lithuania away from all your family and friends, couldn’t Garuitti or a big donor cut a “sponsor” deal where Caleb tweets out a pic of him getting some Shake shack for lunch and pay him $60,000 ?? And Pike promises an away game vs Cincy or something and a preseason tournament in Florida?

I’d be shocked if he hires an agent. He will test the waters and likely decide between returning to RU to work on whatever feedback he’s given or to start earning money playing abroad.

In a night filled with a lot of Rutgers frustration, Caleb was certainly not one of them. He definitely deserved a win there.

Caleb was awesome last night, and I would love for him to return.

That said, he's battled injuries for much of his time at Rutgers. His physical window to pursue a pro career may close suddenly and without notice. I cannot think of a time where his stock will be much higher than it is now, coming off a B1G DPOY season and flashing offensive potential on the big stage. He has played 4 years; he has his degree already. If scouts consider him a legitimate G league candidate, he might as well compete against high level talent as a full time job and develop his offensive skillset where it is lacking.*

*Unless there's some crazy NIL payout enabling him to make good money at RU while pursuing a masters and working on his game.

I don’t see it this way at all. BIG DPOY is an amazing stepping stone but it’s not enough to get him positioned for real consideration on an NBA roster. Not yet.

But for the zillionth time Caleb’s trajectory is different from the other seniors. An NBA roster has 15 players. A defensive stopper (that would be one of the top 5 defensive players on the roster is way more sought after to fill one of the last spots than a better, more well rounded player that isn’t one of the best 7-8 choices at any one skill. One more year of elite defense and improvement on spot shooting and Caleb’s odds of making a roster really do improve. Sure - he has injury concerns but one year in Europe isn’t moving the needle

He is not going to the NBA, so its a choice of another year in college or going to Europe. Hopefully he decides to stay at RU for one last run, he is fun to watch. No reason he can't make a few bucks with an NIL deal next year if he stays.

Understood. I should have emphasized the below clause more strongly - it's a big IF. What I meant is, I think (I could be wrong) it's now or never for any chance at the G league (which probably results in a career in Europe anyway). My point was, given his injury history, nothing is guaranteed after next season, and this may be the most marketable he ever gets. Might as well strike while the iron is hot. IF he has that opportunity, he should jump on it. Otherwise, yes, he should have opportunities abroad the following year and it wouldn't hurt to come back, especially if NIL money is available.
If scouts consider him a legitimate G league candidate,

That’s not accurate. He’s not just a good defender - he was named one of the 10 best nationally. And he has NBA measurables. He’s put himself in a position where there’s a foreseeable path to one day landing a spot on an NBA roster.

Caleb was a hero tonight and deserved to go out a winner. Brutal for him to lose the best game of his offensive career
His best offensive game was against Illinois on the road two years ago.

Caleb deserved a win tonight no question. He barely got the ball second half it seemed.

When someone is hot get them the ball

Too many dumb TOs as a team
Yes, get him the ball. He was feeling it & confident . Should have run a play at the end of regulation & if he was open let him take the last shot, not that Geo ISSO BS.

Caleb doesn’t have to prove that much on offense to be a legit prospect for a utility role. He needs to go back to being automatic from charity and be able to hit uncontested shots more consistently (I.e. get his frosh form back).

Everyone watching college ball focuses on points, but outside of the very best stars scoring ability in college isn’t a predictor of NBA trajectory. Jordan Bohannon is a much better offensive player than Caleb. But at the NBA level - so what? No NBA team would ever sub Bohannon in for any kind of offensive spark because he’d never be a better option than the other guys available on the bench.
