Cal throwing players under the bus

Cal's system calls for a great point guard. The only year that he has been here with a mediocre PG was an NIT year. Don't think we have one this year either.

Ye of little faith! Hagans will be better than Teague by the end of the year. Let’s not jump off the cliff over an overtime loss to a pretty good team that shot it out of their *** in the second half! And this would have been a great well-earned win by a young team early in the season if the refs had not made 2 terrible foul calls on Travis and called the clearly flagrant foul against the kid who threw the elbow into PJ’s throat (which is the rule whether intentional or not)!!

Did Cal really say he wanted a timeout but it wasn't called by the players? If so that's just weak. Just rewatch the last 10 seconds, you see him on the sideline, definitely didn't look like he wanted a timeout. Bad enough to make a mistake; blaming it on your kids is so much worse.

This is spot on.

Honestly, those comments may be near the lowest point of Cal's tenure here. Everyone knows, going back to biddy ball level, that it's on the coach when a timeout is not called when it should be. ESPECIALLY, as here, when the coach made no effort to tell his players to call it.

To try to pawn blame for that off on his players is ridiculous. What the hell are we paying you 8 million dollars per year for if you expect the players to be in charge of doing the things that are supposed to be the coach's job?

I really hope that you’re right. Cal’s has teams take it on the chin all year and then defy the odds and make a final four run. It’s not impossible. I just don’t have the optimism now that I did a few years ago. I had assumed that would happen with the 16 & 18 team and they just petered out. If it happens again this year it’ll be 3 of the last 4 years that we were never really in the running.

We, as Kentucky fans, need to stop this foolish thinking. In 2014, we were saved by some lucky Aaron Harrison shooting, nothing more. It had nothing to do with “taking it on the chin”, etc. I’m glad we got there, but it was more luck than coaching

I am frustrated. I’m upset. Something absolutely has to change...

That being said never have I ever seen such a large collection of grown *** men acting like a bunch of menstruating women on a regular basis when it comes to basketball

I don’t buy this Cal can’t coach stuff. He beat the Pitino led 1996 Kentucky team and he beat them with half the talent. That UMass team then gave the same Kentucky team their hardest game of the NCAA tournament. His Memphis teams played with fire and intensity and tried to annilhate their opponents. I agree something is wrong and I believe that this won’t turn around until and unless Cal gets the majority of these freshmen to come back as sophomores. I’m hoping Kentucky is in the midst of the transformation this year. Washington is the only one that has any business of leaving early. I think outside of Johnson, who may be drafted on raw talent and the fact that he’s physically imposing, that everyone else needs to come back. If they come back Kentucky will be very good next year. If most leave then this could snowball and it’ll be time to ask some serious questions. All we can do is wait out this year, hope to make a nice run, and see if these kids wake up and realize they need another year or two in college.

That is a good question. Who to replace him?

I don’t think (I hope not) the majority want him replaced...they just want him to adjust

Looking back though, I wish someone would’ve knocked him in the head for that stupid NBA draft night comment. That s*** has done more to hurt our program in the long run more than people can imagine

Capel. If you guys move on from Cal (you shouldn’t) Capel would be perfect. He delivers monster classes and could re-energize the program.
You guys might not like to given his Duke roots but he’s perfect for ya’ll.

It is funny how thin that 2014 line was between miserable season and good season.

We were only one basket away from 2014 being remembered as that horrible season where the consensus pre-season No. 1 team (and highest ever rated recruiting class) wound up an unranked 8 seed that flamed out the first weekend of the tourney. But instead it's remembered for the Aaron Harrison fun run to the final four.

Crazy how different we’d look at Cal’s tenure if Harrison didn’t hit those shots. That’s why you play the games.

Appreciate the final four run that team went on, but they lost 12 games that season and had more preseason hype than what this 2018 team had..

And not just more, but WAY more. That was the season that began with the 40-0 tee-shirts, it was supposedy the greatest recruiting class of all time, and we were everybody's runaway choice as the pre-season No. 1 ranked team.

Instead, they ended up an unranked 8 seed. If not for Harrison's tourney heroics, that team would be remembered COMPLETELY differently. It had a miserably disappointing regular season.

True he should have added crying and hysterical to the description. Instead of women, I’d have said candy asses but it was his post and he got his point across.

i am enjoying the melt.

cal has always been a medicore to average coach but a great recruiter.

his title in 2012, he owes to anthony davis. just about any coach would have won it all with that team.

he has always needed superior talent to cover his deficiencies. he just isn't getting it now.

that said, i see him here another 3 years but no more titles

I think he is trying to find a way out after this season, the whole reasoning behind, Kahlil Whitney not signing his LOI..

That whole season was a wash, even the way they laid down to UCONN in the tournament.. That whole game was a letdown, outside of one James Young dunk..

You think Cal is trying to find a way out despite the things he said going into this season about staying longer than he originally thought?

Man, Cal is not gonna go through the stress that Tubby did his last few years here.. If he gets to where he feels the pressure is getting too much and he can not win the big games.. He is gonna take his millions and bounce, we have not even played the North CArolina or Louisville game, Kentucky will not be able to handle that Carolina's run and gun style, not even gonna get into the buzz saw that this team is going to get into at Louisville.. They will probably whoop this team about like Duke did, it's just the depressing truth.. Cal is done here, we are just starting to see it ufold now..

terrible comments. Totally ripped Richards who cal failed to play when we needed him to start OT. He said he “didn’t remember”. He’s been doing this with freshman now for 10 years he should know we needed a timeout to refresh their memory. That’s called coaching. You don’t expect or assume anything about your team you coach them and live by the rule of 50. You gotta tell them 50x til they hear you. Can’t believe he threw the players under the bus.

One fan's view of Cal holding a player accountable is another fan's view of Cal "throwing the player under the bus." Ironically, after every UK loss, this message board is full of UK fans throwing their players "under the bus". Cal has been consistent since he became UK's coach; he will give public praise and criticism as he deems it justified. We, of course, are free to like it or not. The players know this is how Cal responds to good or bad play. Sometimes, public criticism is necessary after all the private efforts to correct mistake prove to be unproductive.
