Made the mistake of watching about 5 mins. of Sportscenter this morning, wanting to see the UK-Auburn highlights, but instead of highlights they showed a post-game question to Cal about him holding his players back. Cal answered something along the lines about how yeah he holds them back to the tune of 40 of his players have been in the NBA and 4 no.1 draft picks.
It seemed like such an assinine question to ask after a game where you spanked a good team. I just switched channels, not really shocked that EpissN would be showing that instead of the game highlights.
I was just wanting to get context on the question in general from those who know more. Who was it that asked the question, and was there more to it that I missed. Thanks.

There is like an inside joke with players like anthony davis and boogie that Cal “held them back” because he wouldnt let them chuck 3s and such....i think its all in fun when they joke about it

But at the presser a reporter brought it up and i couldnt tell if he was joking or seriously asking...and thus cal gives the sales pitch of 40 nba players and such. Just how i saw it. Could be wrong.

I saw the game highlights on ESPN, the snippet from the presser was on a different part of sports center.

I heard Jerry Tipton was the reporter. Can’t understand a daily UK basketball beat writer asking such a dumb question

What shocker.

Not a bigger A$$hat is the sports journalism business. A grumpy old shite who clearly revels in any indication of bad news for UK sports.

How many times has he pulled this crap? At what point does someone start to hold him accountable? I have zero issue with legit questions and even the tough uneasy questions when needed.

But the BS speculative nonsense that this hack continuously spews is over the line. It’s unprofessional and I truly wish UK would remove his privileges. Let him spout all the nonsense he wants but remove his direct access from the games, coaches and players.

Let him chase down PPat and harass him about the Jeep he got his Last season (anyone remember this one).

It’s freaking embarrassing. And although Cal would never admit it publicly you know it pisses him the hell off. As it should all of us.

If you listen to it in context, you can tell it’s one of their inside jokes. I highly doubt it was asked as a real jab. It was actually a leading question to talking about PJ’s development and gave him another chance to put that pitch into the stratosphere for recruits, current players and families to hear.

Honestly I think the only dispute is over definition of terms.

Of course Cal holds his players back.

He holds them back from defeating themselves and their own teams with their own bad habits. He holds them back from dribbling the ball into the ground, from going up for a rebound one-handed, from defending with their hands only, as opposed to their body. He holds them back from a ton of things....

And you may be thinking I’m answering the wrong question, or I’m being difficult. But no, I’m laser-focused on the subject:

Because Cal holds his guys back from so many bad habits, it’s kind of like we won’t let them play their game. And they do play tight because they’re trying to hold so much new stuff in their heads.

By the end of the season, they learned all those lessons. And by that time, Cal is doing the OPPOSITE of holding anybody back. He doesn’t call timeouts. He wants the players to come up with their own game plan during the game, by feeling out the other team, more than any x’s and o’s game plan.

So basically Cal does both.

He holds them back and he does the opposite of holding them back. But all of it is designed to get them to a point where they all play killer basketball, both individually and as a team, and there’s absolutely no reason anyone would want to hold any of them back.

But since pretty much every talking head on the planet hates Cal, of course they’re just gonna focus on rumors that crop up based on how Cal “holds his players back” early in the season, when he’s basically just changing them into themselves.

And of course, while I’m sure you can explain it quicker than I did, there’s still just no way to shrink everything I just typed into a little blurb that people will be able to appreciate on Sportscenter. So Cal did the smart thing and only busted their balls with a one-liner.

Well that’s a horse of a different color. No problem with the person who asked.

I did not catch who asked, but I thought it might have been a Tipton jewel. Cal did not seem very happy with the question and even said, irc, that it was a stupid question, but Cal being calm and cool just played it off as a joke, but did seem a little ticked.

Chill people, the reporter didn’t mean any malice. It’s an inside joke between the Cal and reporters.

I have not listened to it so will take everyone’s word for it.

But, I will say this—if the question came from Tipton it was not said in a joking manner or tongue in cheek. Everything I have ever seen from that windbag would tell me he is either incapable or u willing to be anything other than a prodding AHole when it comes to Cal and UK sports.

It is abundantly clear that Cal can’t stand him ansband even tho Cal doesn’t allow that to come thru very often, it does pop out from time to time when JT asks some BS question with pretty clear insinuations.
